Would these crampons work with a pair of general hiking boots?...

By Ranked #466 - Ice Climbing May 3, 2009

Would these crampons work with a pair of general hiking boots? I am going to be going up South and Middle Teton in early June, but then would like to have a good pair of crampons for any other future winter ascent. Any thoughts?

I just tried them on my Asolo GTX hiking boots. All i did was walk around my office for a few minutes so its hard to say but they seemed solid. Guess ill have to wait for the winter to say for sure but so far so good.

these are not ideal for hiking boots, because of the rear bail. that is meant to snap into the groove on mountaineering style boots. you want a pair of crampons that has a strap on the back, just like the strap on the front of this pair, rather than the wire bail. those are a lot more versatile for general use, because you can even put them on with sneakers, in a pinch. it is possible to force these to work on normal hiking boots, but it is definitely not ideal. grivel makes a really nice crampon, with webbing straps for front and back, which are lighter and more packable. the stiff plastic on these makes it a little less convenient to stow them away in a compact fashion.
