I use messenger bags all day walking/riding around the city, but this pack really isn't designed to be hauled around on a big day hike.
You might want to check out Timbuk2, Crumpler, or Chrome messenger bags. Alternately, try on some Camelbak packs. They cost a little bit more than the competition, but they're much higher quality, intelligently engineered, and have a practically indestructible/non-leaking reservoir.
If you do decide to get a messenger bag, I highly recommend getting a pad strap along with it.
