Zapatha Pass Camp

Zapatha Pass Camp

The North Face Mountain 25 Tent: 2-Person 4-Season

February 10, 2012

Huerfano creek valley, Colorado. Night was windy and cold so besides unlucky cook-on-duty the rest of the family is still half inside under the outer shell where enough room for gear, boots, four heads and that sticky spill morning coffee.

Petzl Stop Descender

June 7, 2011

What is max weight for load? what is the material of roller axis: alloy or steel? I'm questioning this to find out how good it would be on long drops such as longer than 200 feet w/out rebelays, would it overheat and cause aluminum to change characteristics and alloy axis could be a problem.

SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger

November 4, 2010

There was a fatality accident this year in Sangre De Cristo in Blanca area where climber died and none of the two SPOTs were able to send distress signal. Instead survivor had to run over 6hrs to the bottom and it was too late then. I have a suspicion that it only reliable when in cell phone network area coverage zone. To me it look like you selling your fears for $250+ but it just makes you more complacent which is bad.

Must have for mountains

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Rating for this product: 5 September 29, 2010

Ceramic pre-filter does very important job if you are melting snow in summer or take water from glacier moraine runs - it traps sediment. It gets clogged pretty fast but that is how much mud it stops! I could not believe all that mud I just have used to drink before. Another awesome thing is that it disinfects the water so you could skip sometimes the boiling part when you don't have a time or room for a stove in your pack. Ability to pump water from under a rock is priceless too http://www.flickr.com/photos/ary-cave/4832383285/

Montrail Rockridge Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Rockridge Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2010

I had to return first pair and get a size up from what I usually wear. I use it now for over a month crossing on Florida trails. Unfortunately shoes still make a squeaky sound (I hope it will finally wear and squeaking stops) and it is a problem for me sneaking from house on weekend morning. Grip, light weight and fit is very very good. I personally would prefer camo style but they only come in screaming palettes so I have to live with it. The mesh is not as easy breathing as it was in my worn to the ground TNF so if I would choose shoe now I would go for TNF.

The North Face Single-Track Trail Running Shoe - Men's

July 26, 2010

Reg. "Manufacturer Warranty: Lifetime". Having durability issues before with my TNF trail runners (not from BackCountry). I would like to ask:
- if pieces started to peel off from sole and shoe nose past a year of use would TNF replace it?
- what is the replacement procedure (if any) if TNF product was purchased at BC

it sucks but works

Optimus Nova Plus Stove

Optimus Nova Plus Stove

Rating for this product: 3 July 18, 2010

I have used it 2 weeks in CO at altitudes varying from 8K to 13K. At 8K it worked satisfactory. Above 10K I never managed to run it smoothly. I used camping fuel purchased from Walmart camping dpt. Even after long lasting warmup (the cup under the burner was almost full of fuel prior to warmup burn) it never ran smooth but rather kinda farting. I was able to cook on it but I know it was not right. The primary problem however is the design of flexible fuel line with quick disconnect. First - it can be very hard to keep parts of the connector clean. Imagine yourself sitting in freezing cold somewhere on a mud-rock island on a glacier and the damn thing drops on a "floor" while you are disconnecting or connecting it. Sand gets into connection and immediately rips apart the tiny o-ring. By the way that damn o-ring is a cheap EPDM rubber that gets already half dissolved by camp fuel even before abrasion caused by accidentally introduced sand. They put 4 of those o-rings in initial kit but trust me you need something like 20, and a patience of a surgeon to replace it in blasting freezing wind. The dust caps that supposed to protect line connector from debris are pathetic - they fall off by themselves.

The stove bag size is cramped and compartments are not easy to fit with stove parts.

A separate Foo I would like address to Optimus fuel bottle screw caps. They now equipped with polymer gasket seals that shrink being out of contact with liquid which results in them falling out from the cap and the cap is leaking. If you fish the gasket out from the bottle: good luck setting it back in cap - it will expand being saturated w/fuel and it won't fit. I'm not sure if it is only Optimus caps though acting that way because O bottle look pretty similar to other brands. Overall I'm disappointed - my 30 yrs old soviet made Shmel stove (which I always hated BTW) works much better than this stove. I would like to return it actually if they take it back ...

TNF M25 2010

The North Face Mountain 25 Tent: 2-Person 4-Season

The North Face Mountain 25 Tent: 2-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 5 July 18, 2010

2010 edition is as great as its predecessor. I used it during 2 week journey in CO. We had nights w/wind blasting at 50mph and temps below freeze. My wife kept bogging me "what if tent flies?" but I just slept thru it while the top of the dome was touching our sleeping bags at times of hard gusts. I would think however about getting extra (sold separately) set of alu tubes for wind re-enforcement. Awesome tent.

Thule Parkway Hitch Carrier - 2 Bike

Thule Parkway Hitch Carrier - 2 Bike

Rating for this product: 3 September 29, 2009

So far works for me 2 weeks. I had no problem w/using it. Few extra rubber bands will help to prevent rattling and sliding along bars. I would recommend to get a long secure cable and a separate weather resistant lock w/dial code for it. IMHO auxilary pin-lock that thule suggests will be trashed by road dirt and you won;'t be able to stick the key in.

Occasional dunk killed it

Garmin Rino 120 with Detailed Basemap

Garmin Rino 120 with Detailed Basemap

Rating for this product: 4 July 3, 2009

I used this for 5 yrs. This was a 4th occasional dunk. Kayak tipped over in ocean. It is hard to tell how deep it went but dot deeper than 1m as duffle bag was attached to the vessel. The damage affected only the display because the picture still appears once in a while. Don't know if it is worth of a repair. Otherwise it was a great navigation instrument and it took a lot of abuse. RIP. Sometimes it was very slow to obtain a connection w/sats. Display could be brighter and larger. Lanyard is flimzy - needs more heavy duty way of clipping it of, perhaps w/snap bolt. Looking for a better replacement now.

Outdoor Research Bug Bucket Hat

Outdoor Research Bug Bucket Hat

Rating for this product: 4 May 22, 2009

Very convenient - fits in a pocket, lightweight. Visibility is not bad. The net however bothers when not in use - there is no way to fold it while using a hat as for a sun protection only. It also gets caught on scrub but the mesh nylon is pretty strong - i didn't have any holes so far. I'm sensitive to bug bites so it helps me a lot to explore Florida swamps.
