  • Stomping Grounds:

    Midwestern Corn Country
  • Bio:

An open letter to backcountry.com eCommerce management team.

This message is in regards to the breakout of bike products to the new RealCyclist.com domain. I have been a Backcountry customer for some time and I have grown to love your store. I enjoy the selection of product, advice of gear experts, and excellent post-sale service. As an avid mountain biker being new road bike racing I was thrilled to see the bike gear on backcountry. If only my wife knew how much new gear I needed. I have also grown to love the new features you added for customer review, photos and Q&A. In fact, looks like I am still a Top 20 gear guru today.
So proving my reputability let’s cut to the chase. Shopping on the site yesterday I got to pick up a few camping supplies, a HRM Watch, first-aid supplies, and bike lube… Bike Lube! What the heck; I can’t put the bike stuff in the same cart as my backpacking, trail-running, and camping gear? I contacted customer service through Chat and they mentioned the site will operate independent but he could combine the carts if I was ready to order.
I can understand having a cycling specific marketing face to attract new customers, but in the end they should operate under seamlessly as possible under the same cart, shipping, and service. Just like the Amazon model. Why must the bikers be pigeonholed and separated from the rest of the shoppers.
In summary, I am not a realcyclist customer, not a dogfunk or huck and roll customer and probably will never if they are operated independently. I am a Backcoutry.com customer and would like to keep it that way; whether I am buying bike parts, snowboard and ski stuff, or backcountry gear.
Please reassess your marketing plan because you are alienating good existing customers.
    Sincerely,
    Damon Salter

If you don't mind having the most expensive snow blowing gloves in town you won't be unhappy with these gloves. I have a similar Pearl Izumi glove I have used for snow blowing and they were great. These have a leather palm so you won't melt your glove on the exhaust pipe. :-)

Twin Six Brew Pub T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Twin Six Brew Pub T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 27, 2009

I love this shirt. First it's a high-quality American Apparel t-shirt, I can tell that even though the AA tag was removed from the shirt. It was a great slim fit and sizes just like the Twin Six jerseys, which I always size up on so it ain't too tight. My wife thinks it looks super good on me and the fit is flattering. She likes the graphic too, OK she has no clue. That is what is cool, cause my bike nerd friends are like sweet Tour de France shirt, and my other friends are like cool shirt. It's much easier than wearing your 2002 US Postal Jersey to the bar.

Twin Six Argyle Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Twin Six Argyle Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 27, 2009

This jersey is like a chameleon, you know that friend in high-school that was a Cowboy one week, Head-banger the next. If combines elements of traditional cycling geek, punk rock, and preppy hipster in one jersey. The pictures on the site don't do it justice; I'll try to post a couple of my own.

The fit and cut is great, not too tight not too loose. I tend to think I look darn good in this baby. The construction is flawless and I plan on owning this one for a while.

I size up compared to some jerseys but the sizing chart is accurate.

This jersey has become my group ride fav, dethroning quite a few others

Thule Ridgeline Hitch Bike Carrier - 4 Bike

March 26, 2009

I have never heard of this happen if torqued on properly with a lock washer, thousands of miles over many years on mine. For that matter everybolt on your car would be a concern if that were the case. But I have to assume if someone removed the lock-washer from the bolt and didn't tighten the bolt, it could vibrate loose. The bonus is the rack is nice and tight and your bikes ride alot sturdier.

I just don't understand how secure this rack is, even with the lock cylinders. Can anyone explain to be why a thief wouldn't just be able to just flip off the front quick-release on the bike, unlatch the rear wheel and take the bike off the rack? Seems to me, you could remove the bike in seconds even if using the locks.

Rossignol Axial2 120 Pro Wide Ski Binding

Rossignol Axial2 120 Pro Wide Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 5 March 18, 2009

I mounted these up to K2 PEs and have used them for the past two sessions. I have had absolutely no problems with them at all. The DIN turns up plenty high but even at 8 I have never had a ski come off incidentally even when landing off balance on one ski. Only recommendation is if you do a lot of jumping you might want to consider the JIB for the padding insert.

Castelli Escordio Cycling Jersey - Men's

Castelli Escordio Cycling Jersey - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 11, 2009

I got this jersey in size XL after reviewing the size chart and the recommendation to size up from normal sizes. The size chart was accurate and the jersey fit good on my chest and was nice and long in the body and arm. The shoulders are pretty narrow though, and I have a medium build. If you have broad shoulders this isn't for you.
The jersey itself is constructed nicely. The fleece is soft to the skin and warm, it wicks sweat surprisingly well. I like that it has ample arm length so it can be tucked under a glove. The full-length zipper has a cloth backing behind it for warmth. If you are in cooler weather you will want to layer this with a vest or jacket, or a good base because the wind blows through it pretty easily.
I was going to give it 4 stars and not 5 because of the small shoulders, but am giving it 3 because the zipper is low quality and has been separating on me. This jersey is a pretty good price though.

March 6, 2009

Good question. A 172.5mm crankset is usually speced' with frames in the 54 - 56 cm range. The difference is pretty small but bike fitters often suggest different crankarm depending on your body structure. Not knowing how tall you are it's tough to say. If you have a long torso (short leg) you may want the 170, if you are average to longer legged use the 172.5.

Yakima HitchSki

March 2, 2009

I was probably reviewing the older model because mine is square. I looked at some pictures of the new model and it shows a pair of twin-tip skis mounted on it stacked, which I can't do. The description says "2 position upper arms, adjustable lower arm". So I guess depending on the adjustability of the lower arm you may be able mount ski back to back, but unless the lower arm is actually hinged there it is unlikely you will get two snowboard back to back in there. I have mounted four snowboards before but it required I dissassemble the lower arm to get them mounted in, it was a pain in the butt and I won't do it again.Has anyone gotten this to work?

PRO by Shimano VIBE Full Carbon Cycling Handlebar - Round

March 2, 2009

Technically the bar has a wide oversized area around the stem that will support using most 31.8 clip-on bars. Shimano is not bold enough to make a claim on there bars except that the Stealth EVO is compatible with the Stealth EVO Clip-ons. Since the Stealth is a monocoque bar and so is the Vibe full carbon, one could assume it was OK to use clip-ons, but I guess it is a “Use at your own risk” deal”.

Shimano America Dura-Ace 7801 STI Levers - Double

Shimano America Dura-Ace 7801 STI Levers - Double

Rating for this product: 4 February 25, 2009

These shifters are top notch. They feel really solid and shirt very accurately. Infact, combined with dura-ace shifters the shifts are amazingly precise. The ergonomics of the handle and hood are good as long as you don't try to mount the hoods parallel to the ground, this is not cool anyway.

The beef I have with these are
1) The small tin top cap on these are garbage and are easily damaged. If it dents it will interfere with the shifters mechanism. Replacing these little buggers is expensive.
2) The shifter cables still spout out the side of the shifter and don't run under that bar tape which is week and looks cluttered.

Nice price, Reliable, a little drag

Rating for this product: 4 February 25, 2009

This bottom bracket is pretty cool. It is clean and light, easy to install and virtually maintenance free. It holds up to everything mountain bike, urban riding, or thousands of miles on the road. The bearings are really smooth but the seal seem to be very tight and they seem to cause a bit of drag. Otherwise a great overall buy.

Great mid-end cycling computer

Polar CS200 Cycling Heart Rate Monitors

Polar CS200 Cycling Heart Rate Monitors

Rating for this product: 5 February 24, 2009

I went ahead and bought the CS200 CAD (plus cadence) model after various input from others. I have really enjoyed this computer so far. Mounting everything and setup was a breeze (I did read the manual). The display is large and presents a lot of information in a easy to read format. The training zones can be entered manually or calculated through the OwnZone feature and zone times are tracked on the computer. The heart rate strap is the most comfortable I have ever used and has a removable meter for washing. I always get a great heart rate read from this computer, an A+ HRM. I recommend the cadence reading unit which gives you a valuable additional dynamic to your training. The cadence is very accurate and has not been subject of interference so far. The unit itself is not integrated with the speed sensor and is rather large. So a B grade for the cadence sensor. The speed sensor is housed in a small and aero package. It is accurate against my gps and another computer. The speed sensor does have a short range though and can't be mounted on the rear wheel for indoor training. I have also found the speed reading to have interference from my blackberry and my ipod cannot be mounted within 3 inches of the computer head or speed reads weird. The interference is rare and I read several other review from 2006 - 2007 units have all kinds of interference problems. Apparently Polar has worked these old for the most part because other than other electrical devices close to the unit I have had no problems. Surprisingly the feature I have found most valuable is the ability to upload the data to Polar Fitness website. There I can track my workouts review data and plan custom or prepared exercise programs. Getting data to the computer requires you have a computer with a microphone and a quiet room because it works via sound like a modem. This was a little weird at first but once I got the hang of it, everything is great. The persona fitness coach software is the added valuable that sets this computer apart from others.

Shimano America 105 Hollowtech Double Crankset

February 20, 2009

The description says "Bottom bracket is not included", so I'd say its not included. Shimano likes to throw the word "integrated" around to let the world know that their components work best as a system. P.S. Integrated BB means the arm goes all the way to connect to the other arm for stiffness and light weight. They still ride on what they call "Bearing Cups", which are required and avaiilable seperately.

The maximum size carry-on bag for most airlines is 45 linear inches (the total of the height, width, and depth of the bag). So technically the largest size you can carry on is the Medium in this bag.

Selle San Marco Zoncolan Triath Gel Saddle

February 16, 2009

Information is a bit off tilt here on bc. The Zoncolan Triath Gel is a 235 wide saddle good for medium size riders. It has solid Titanium rails, not carbon. The saddle is pretty light at 185 grams but not the ridiculous light weight quoted.

Yes, the cap extends down to cover the ears, atleast most of them. Mine comes down to about the bottom of the ear loob, sorta where your helmet strap connects under the ear. It is toasty warm too.

Thule Transport T2

February 3, 2009

I have never seen a travel cover retailed for the Thule T2 at backcountry. A standard two-strap travel cover works very well on the T2 and can be purchased for under $50 at you local RV dealer. I like the ADCO brand which I only found at a RV dealer.

A no brainer for those seeking a little comfort

Prologo Touch Choice Gel Saddle Cover

Prologo Touch Choice Gel Saddle Cover

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

This cover is a real a$$ saver for bigger or more casual riders.

The additional padding on the gel cover is a welcome addition to any rider who has a Choice saddle who needs a little relief during a long ride. I use this cover for training and long rides and it is remarkable how many more miles I can get in before I experience saddle soreness.

The fit is perfect, the swap is easy, and the weight gain is minimal.

Thule Transport T2

October 16, 2008

I have a 3/4 bolt that screws into the welded nut inside the hitch tube, un the bolt I have slide a metal washer that has a c-shape the allows me to use a standard masterlock so people cannot access the head of the bolt. This came stock with my rack, and I am unsure if you can get one aftermarket. My brother lost his lock washer and had the welded nut removed so he could use any brank locking hitch pin. This worked good but the rack wiggles more because it is not bolted down.

Very Impressive Comfort

Giordana Race Tech Cycling Short - Men's

Giordana Race Tech Cycling Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 25, 2008

I have used these shorts for just a bit more than 500 miles and I am very impressed. The fit is accurate to the sizing chart which is pretty rare. The material is perfect mix of lycra that is neither thick or thin and has worn well. The chamois has been the most impressive; I am getting about 15 minutes of extra riding time before I start to feel my sit bones burn. Plus the fit is male specific leaving a little room so you don't feel like a panini sandwich.
