The best quickdraws I own

Wild Country Xenon Lite Quickdraw - 5 Pack

Wild Country Xenon Lite Quickdraw - 5 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 July 11, 2009

These things are ungodly light. The biners way 29 grams each, so the sling only weighs 7 grams. You really can't get much lighter than that.

They are also wiregates. Recent research on dynamic falls has proven wiregates to be much safer than traditional gates, the traditional gates are prone to open under heavy movement. Don't believe me? Take your wire gate and your normal gate and smack them each against your hand, with the gate being on the opposite side you strike. You'll hear the normal gate "click" once the gate snaps back into position, but the wire gate will stay put. It's due to the extra weight of the gate! So wires are the only way to go.

In addition, you're only spending $13.60 per quickdraw with this set up. Sure, the heliums are better, but not that much better. For the price, there is no better quickdraw!

Black Diamond Camalot C4 Package #0.5 - 3

Black Diamond Camalot C4 Package #0.5 - 3

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

Once you get these cams, they are the standard by which you will compare all other cams you have. They have such a range and are so bomber that you'll learn to trust these where you trust no other. They do a great job of controlling walk-out too.

Every piece of protection has its place, but every good rack should have these pieces of pro!

Great, if you need the added functionality

Black Diamond ATC Guide

Black Diamond ATC Guide

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

This is such a great ATC. I use it for everything: belaying, rapping, lead and regular belaying, top-rope belaying, and belaying on lead. The added friction is useful, but I usually stick with regular unless belaying someone heavy.

Although this is a great ATC, I will say that if you are not going to lead, the added functionality and price of $4 isn't worth it over the ATC-XP.

Great gloves, but size down

Metolius Belay Glove

Metolius Belay Glove

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

Great gloves. Recommend sizing down for a good fit once the leather breaks in. I normally wear a large in winter-esque gloves, but I've sized down to a small for these. After break in, they fit great. I've had some really fast repels on these gloves, and although they do turn black with use, the leather doesn't seem to break down.

Oh, try not to pinch them in your biners. It will crack open the leather.

Wild Country Xenon Wire Anodized Carabiner - 5 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

When you look at price and weight, these beat BD Neutrinos (both in size and weight), and are quite a bit cheaper than Nano 23's. Really, what's 6 g per biner when you've saved $15 bucks comparably?

Burton Gore-Tex Mitten - Men's

March 28, 2009

Sure. Burton gloves are easy enough to find. Go check out a local store and try on the burton gloves and see what size you are and then buy them here. Or buy both sizes and expect to ship one back.

Otherwise, this is a mitten and you can have a slightly tighter fit and still be good to go. I'd opt for the small if you're on the fence, but probably the medium if you were buying gloves.

Definitely wouldn't recommend it. Step in boots have a lot of structural support built in. If you put them in a normal set of bindings, you are going to have double the normal structural support. Save the weight and issues and grab yourself a new pair of boots off brociety for $50-75 bucks

Giro 2008 G9 Audio Series Helmet

January 4, 2009

If you get a helmet with audio in the ears, expect it to hurt your ears. Some hurt more than others. The inherent problem is that a helmet must be tight in order to effectively protect you. With a padded ear part, it's not a big deal. Once you start throwing the inner workings of a headphone in, it's not nearly as comfortable. If you want to overcome this, the best thing to do is take the ear pieces off, ride with earbuds in and a beanie over to keep your head warm/earbuds in. I've tried many different helmets, and everyone with headphones in it hurt me, and those without didn't.

Burton AK Oven Mitten - Men's

January 4, 2009

The difference between a glove and this mitten, a glove allows air between the fingers, a mitten does not (even if it has finger dividers.) Thus, by the laws of physics, since there is no cold temperature present in between the fingers of a mitten, the dividers can not make your fingers cold. The reality is that they help keep your fingers warm by removing dead air pockets in the mitten. These dead air pockets can get pretty cold because they have good exposure to the outside of the mitten and little exposure to your fingers. That's why you should always get the smallest size glove/mitten that will fit your hand.

Bern Baker Helmet w/Knit Liner

November 17, 2008

More than anything, the comfort and protection.Brock foam is a very soft foam that does a great job of molding to your head, ensuring that your helmet is comfortable. I have a Bern helmet, and it is by far more comfortable than my ProTec (uses a different kind of foam) or Giro (uses EPS foam.) However, the foam is soft and I question how much it would help in a very hard impact. I have had decently hard impacts on the Brock foam and it seemed to do pretty well. Brock foam seems to bounce back to it's original size after an impact (remember, I'm not a helmet manufacturer.) EPS foam is very hard. If the foam isn't molded well to your head or the helmet doesn't include a lot of very soft padding, it can be very uncomfortable, even if you've picked the right size. Think of this foam a lot like the foam they use to pack electronics in, but much much harder. I think during a heavy impact, I would prefer to have the EPS foam. All in all, due to comfort, I usually wear my Brock foam. I find that if I wear a helmet with EPS foam, I usually have a headache by mid day. And what good is a helmet if you don't want to wear it? I would say that if you are going to buy online without trying it on, go for a brock foam. If you can try it on in a local store and it fits well with no pressure points, it's probably alright to get an eps foam.

Great Knee Pads

Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad

Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad

Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2008

At first when I got these, I thought they were awfully skinny to protect my knees. But they do a great job. I can fit them under my snowboard pants (I use them for snowboarding) and I barely notice them. Whenever I fall, they are right there. Only had them slip off one time after a long sidewards slide down the slopes, but that was well after the point of impact.

Haven't done anything that I think could have damaged my knees yet, but it's great being able to get up immediately from a spill.

Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2008

I was originally a skier and just converted to snowboarding. When you catch an edge it is very painful. With these pants, I can get up immediately and keep boarding.

They struck a good balance of not too thick but well padded. I wouldn't want them to be any more/less thick. They can easily fit underneath my boarding pants and they are barely noticeable. Well worth the $40 to be able to sit without pain after a long session of boarding.

The recorder only has one input, so not with what was provided. I'm sure, however, you could find a hardware switch that would allow you to switch between one input and another. Rossignol Saphir 120 Pro WB Ski Binding - Women's

Brakes are quite a bit wider than the ski (78 / 100). I would go for an 80 mm brake. If you are used to the integrated binding and enjoy it because of the lift you get, you might consider something else. This will mount you pretty close to the ski and you won't get that power for edging or lift to make sure your boot doesn't contact.

Burton Clash Snowboard

November 2, 2008

Depends on what you are going to be riding. For an easy board to learn on, get a freestyle/park board. The flex will make a smoother riding board. However, don't expect to get much speed with it. And know that you need to stick to groomed runs.Go with a shorter board for this. You would probably enjoy one of the ride freestyle boards for this. I would stick with 150-155.If you would like to get some more speed and aren't looking to play in the park, go for a big-mountain board with a setback stance. You'll have more stability and a great board if you want to play in powder. Go with a longer board for this. I love my K2 podium board for this. It isn't setback, but if you got it in 160-164 it should do what you want. You should also look into getting bindings that fit your style.

Should be fine as a starter harness. Gym harnesses don't really matter too much because you don't spend as much time using them as you do outdoors (cleaning routes, anchoring, rappelling, etc.) I would probably buy the 8, you want this harness to fit snug.It seems like indoor harnesses last quite a while. Outdoors is a different story. If you mostly climb indoors and climb outside 2-3 times a year, I would guess this harness would last you 2-3 years.

Marker 12.0 Free Ski Bindings

October 28, 2008

No. The brake width is for up to 110mm. Note that this will work, but at that size you will likely be dragging the brake when you carve (kind of like getting risers so ski boots don't drag since they stick out too much.) Also, when you try to lock the two skis together for storage, they aren't going to hold very tight. You're probably better off finding a binding that supports around 80mm brake width, or buying a different brake if you are truly set on this binding.
