Great Crag, Gym, Travel, or Bike Pack

Mountain Hardwear Splitter Backpack - 2150-2350cu in

Mountain Hardwear Splitter Backpack - 2150-2350cu in

Rating for this product: 5 November 20, 2009

I've had this pack for about six months and I've used it for cragging, hitting the gym, traveling, and biking. It's a little on the large size for just going out for a sport climb, but it fits everything nicely with room to spare and allows for some nice organization.

I also like that it is just big enough for a long weekend trip while small enough to fit in the overhead bin of an airplane with a little shove.

On the occasions I've had to bike with my laptop to work along with some clothes, this pack has been great on a 15 mile ride. The straps worked nicely and weren't uncomfortable at all on the ride.

Overall though, I use this pack as a climbing gym pack and it's great for it. Toss multiple pairs of climbing shoes in there along with your harness, chalk bag, and keep your keys and wallet nicely organized in one of the top compartments.

Lastly, this pack seems like it will hold up for a long time with its nylon and ballistics cordura.

Solid Pack minus Rain Cover

Osprey Packs Aether 70 Backpack- 4000-4400cu in

Osprey Packs Aether 70 Backpack- 4000-4400cu in

Rating for this product: 4 November 20, 2009

I've had nothing but great experiences with this pack. It's a perfect size for a two day to 5 day trip. The straps, zippers, and stretch material in the middle all work flawlessly to make you pack nice and tight. I especially like the bottom sleeping bag zipper compartment. It makes for easy packing and unpacking of the bag. I've packed this sucker up with 60+ pounds of camping and photo gear and always been comfortable. The only reason why this isn't getting a full 5 stars is that I think they should have included a rain cover. I wouldn't have minded an additional cost for it and think it's a pain as most people need one. As it is you have to order one for about $40. All in all though, this is a solid pack and you won't regret buying it.

Great Rope

Sterling Fusion Nano Single Rope - 9.2mm

Sterling Fusion Nano Single Rope - 9.2mm

Rating for this product: 5 November 20, 2009

This rope has held up to a bunch of daytrips out to Boulder Canyon for sport climbing. It has a nice feel to it as a belayer, doesn't pick up much in the way of dirt/grime, and is super light when clipping biners at the top of a climb. I've also used a friend's Fusion Nano while ice climbing and it was awesome in those conditions as well. Only small gripe is that some friends think it's too thin and are scared to climb on it- their loss!

Solid Rain Jacket for Backpackers and Climbers

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 20, 2009

The Pre-clip jacket has been great on day trips and short (3 day or less) backpacking trips. Unlike some reviewers, I'd disagree that it can't hold up in a steady rain for several hours. I've been in several downpours with it and I've stayed dry. Also, I haven't had any problem with it wearing away the lining when carrying a large (70L) pack. It's not perfect with a lack of breathability, but I love how it packs down very small and light. Definitely recommended.

Good for Leading in the Gym

Black Diamond Ozone Harness

Black Diamond Ozone Harness

Rating for this product: 3 October 27, 2009

This is definitely a solid harness if you are a gym goer, but even if you're leading sport outside you'll need to clean a route or two eventually. In the time it takes you to clean something, your legs and male parts will be numb. The lack of weight is definitely due to a lack of padding. Don't ever think about setting up a fixed line and taking photos in this harness. Your manhood will hate you for it.

Lastly, only two gear loops is pretty lame. I'll definitely be getting another harness for outside climbing.

Love this Stove

Jetboil Group Cooking System with 1.5 Liter Cooking Pot

Jetboil Group Cooking System with 1.5 Liter Cooking Pot

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

The jetboil system is simple and effective. We've used it on trips to warm and cold locations with little problem. I like how the whole thing compacts into the pot and you can also fit your jetboil utensils in there as well.

Recently, the igniter has turned to hit or miss so we usually bring some matches or lighter to get it going.

It's highly suggested that you bring this into your tent if it is super cold out and just ensure the vents are open in the tent. The heating element on the bottom of the pot will turn into a cooling element if it's windy and boiling water out of a tent will turn into a watched pot that takes forever to boil.

Super Bright

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

On several backpacking trips my cohorts have noticed that this headlamp is by far the brightest of the bunch. It has a great battery life as well. Be forewarned- if you get this headlamp, you'll be forced into the lead when backpacking at night :)

Can't Beat It

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

The Apollo has a nice intuitive design and puts out enough light for reading easily in your tent. The battery life indicator although in a strange spot (can't see it when fully expanded) is also a nice touch.

Great Pack for Fairly Long Runs

CamelBak Octane XC Hydration Pack - 2L

CamelBak Octane XC Hydration Pack - 2L

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

I used this pack for training for a marathon on trails around Colorado. I found that it:
1- Has enough capacity for between 20 and 30 miles depending on the dryness of the air and heat level (obviously the two will determine how much you drink)
2- Fit nicely once I had a few runs with it and got used to cinching it down correctly
3- Only gave me chafing when I let my shirt ride up after a few hours of running
4- Held ample gu's and gels

My only complaint would be that the side pockets are way to the side and near your back so sometimes it's hard to get something out of them while running.

CamelBak Octane XC Hydration Pack - 2L

October 27, 2009

I'm 5''7' on a good day and it fits my torso nicely. I'd say it is on the shorter side and the side pockets and waist belt only come down to above my belly button. You'd be good with this pack.

Solid Bag

DAKINE Split Convertible Rolling Gear Bag - 6425cu in.

DAKINE Split Convertible Rolling Gear Bag - 6425cu in.

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

I have one and my g/f just got one as well. We both love them and have put them through the ringer through climbing, ski, and regular vacations. It's nice to have the option to go with the one bag on a short trip or the whole thing on a longer trip. I disagree with some reviewers that you can't put your ski boots inside and have enough room. I've done this many times. My one small gripe is that there aren't handles on the side of the main rolling bag- many times this one will be holding most of the bulk and the handles on the other bag make it awkward carrying.

La Sportiva Miura VS Climbing Shoe

October 25, 2009

it's very tough to say. i generally wear a 9.5 shoe size, but tend to put my feet through a lot of pain and suffering and move down to between a 40 and 41 euro size (7-7.5). you really should just try on the shoe if at all possible. also, the miura tends to run big in my opinion as i wear a 39.5 or 40.

Great Trail Shoe

La Sportiva Wildcat GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Wildcat GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

These are simply great trail shoes. They're pretty lightweight at 13oz a piece and provide ample, yet subtle support. I got so used to running in these around the trails and open space parks in Colorado that I ran a road marathon in them. If you're like me and much prefer a more minimal trail shoe over road shoes, I'd suggest these even if you're training for some road races. My only minor complaint is that these are not easy to slip on and off because of the glove-like inner, so you might want to choose another shoe if you're looking for a trail/runner and approach shoe for bouldering and/or climbing

Best La Sportiva Trail Runners Yet

La Sportiva Wildcat Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Wildcat Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 13, 2009

I've had a few different trail runners offered by La Sportiva - the Exum Ridge, the Sonic TR, and now the Wildcats. The Wildcats are the best by far. They're light, offer just enough support, but also have a minimal feel, and are stylish. Through training for the Chicago Marathon and an ultra in the fall, I've run both trail and road quite a bit in these shoes. They've held up and I love the fact that they've prevented me from some ankle sprains in the rocky CO terrain.

Great Rain Jacket for Climbing and Backpacking

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 12, 2009

I'm always impressed with how this jacket has held up in the past 2 years of owning it. I've primarily packed it everywhere I go outside in CO to protect against the ever-common afternoon thunderstorms. It's held up and has been great backpacking. I haven't had any issue with breath-ability like other reviewers have. On the other hand, I also haven't run with it, but then again I'd buy a running-specific jacket if I wanted to do that. I highly recommend this jacket and even bought one for my g/f.

Great ATC

Black Diamond ATC Guide

Black Diamond ATC Guide

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2009

Definitely my favorite device with which to belay. The ATC-XP is good, but the teeth are simply too much for the skinny people I usually belay (plus switching it around just seems a little strange to me), but the ATC guide has just enough bite to catch and lower nicely. In addition, the ability to guide people with it in a top-belay format adds a lot to this. I love the auto-locking feature with an additional biner. Awesome stuff from BD as usual... and I even bought my g/f one... hence I trust her just a bit more now on big whippers.
