Solid Choice

Stoic Somnus 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Stoic Somnus 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 January 8, 2012

I have had this bag for a while and I really like it.
The center zip does take some getting used to. Fully zipped the cold metal zipper has been known to fall on peoples' faces, but to me that is not the end of the world. This is a known problem though, so I'm not sure why Stoic hasn't addressed it.
The size of the bag works for me. I'm short, so the length is more than adequate. I move around in my sleep and have never had a problem with the width either.
I like how small this bag packs down. The included stuff sack is really solid.
Warmth wise this bag is good, but I can't say I would sleep in 6 degree weather like the previous reviewer. I sleep cold though, so maybe it's just me. If you're a cold sleeper as well, this bag should suit you down to around freezing. Anything below that and you should pick up a good bag liner as well.
Overall, this bag is light weight and a good value if you wait for a sale. Recommended.

Smith Transit Pro Goggles

Smith Transit Pro Goggles

Rating for this product: 4 December 20, 2011

Because these goggles are still pretty big on me. I can't imagine wearing the Scope Pro.. Anyways these fit me nicely even so, are comfortable, and haven't fogged up, yet. Build seems solid. I got the Black frame with the RC36 lens and my girlfriend says I look even sexier than usual with them on, so that's a plus.

Baffin Base Camp Slipper - Men's

Baffin Base Camp Slipper - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 19, 2011

They keep the feet warm, that's about it. Comfy, but I wouldn't want to walk in them much more than just around camp. The soles seem solid, but I can't speak to durability as I haven't had them for that long. Update coming after I get back from a 3 week backcountry skiing trip.

Good, But Not For Me

Therm-a-Rest Trekker Chair

Therm-a-Rest Trekker Chair

Rating for this product: 3 October 27, 2011

I picked this guy up for a 3 week backpacking trip in AZ. Overall, it performs as expected. When you get into camp at night, just take this puppy out and fit your sleeping pad in it. Sit back and relax. However, I found that I really missed having a chair during lunch breaks and what not. I'm returning mine and picking up a lightweight Crazy Creek. To me, the weight savings of the Trekker Chair are not worth the inconvenience.

Marmot Reactor 1/2-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Marmot Reactor 1/2-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 27, 2011

I really like this fleece. It is ridiculously soft, light weight and looks good to boot. The reason for only three stars is the odd choice of material on the collar. Instead of making the outside collar out of fleece like the rest of the jacket, Marmot opted for the same fabric found around the sleeve pocket. This materiel causes the collar to bunch up into odd shapes. Also, hand pockets would be great. Besides these two details, the jacket is a keeper. Overall, I would probably buy it again.

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 27, 2011

I really like this jacket. It looks quite puffy in the picture, but in reality it hugs the body pretty well. Packs up into its own pocket which is pretty neat. (Turn the left front pocket inside out and stuff the rest in) Super light weight, compressible.
Overall a great midweight layer. Recommended.

So it squeaks a bit as you move around on it, big deal. I'm so tired after a day of backpacking I barely notice. The weight savings are incredible. I used mine on a 5 day Grand Canyon rafting trip and couldn't be happier. Definitely recommended.

No Excuse for Shoddy Workmanship

Stoic LTWT Sleeping Pad - Short

Stoic LTWT Sleeping Pad - Short

Rating for this product: 1 October 26, 2011

Picked this up for a 3 week backpacking trip in AZ. Wasn't expecting much, just a light weight minimalist pad. After the second night, 2 holes show up around the valve, right on the seams. Disappointing, but it comes with a repair kit, so no big deal, right? Wrong..
The repair kit is an utter joke. A tiny tube of "glue", and a little piece of plastic to cover the hole. The glue was absolutely worthless. Luckily a friend had some seam sealer that was able to patch it for the remainder of the trip. You couldn't pay me to hike with this thing again..

Stoic Merino Comp Trail Crew Sock - 1pr

Rating for this product: 4 June 28, 2011

I'm really digging these socks, they are very comfy so far. My feet run hot, (pun intended), but they stay at a relatively good temp in these bad boys. These socks are thin, so they don't work as well in hiking boots, at least for me. I like to wear them around town in my tennis shoes. Bomber construction. Recommended.

Addicted to Juice

Leatherman Juice S2 Multi-Tool

Leatherman Juice S2 Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 4 May 10, 2011

I love my little Juice. It's small , tough and light weight, yet basically has everything you need in the back country or even around town. Keep in mind that there are a number of different versions of the Juice. This one is the S2 and comes with scissors. My version is the C2, and is identical except that it comes with a wine bottle opener instead of scissors. What can I say, I like a nice bottle of merlot after a hard days trek. Either way you go, the Juice is a great multi tool to have by your side.

Everything you need except...

Leatherman Skeletool CX Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 4 May 10, 2011

I love the skeletool, and have had mine for a number of years. Super light weight, super tough, what's not to like? The only thing that I found missing is a can opener. Maybe it's just me, but whenever I go backpacking I always have at least a can or two that need to be opened, and the skeletool is no help there. Luckily I found an easy fix. I bought a small light weight can opener and have attached it via string to the skeletool's carabiner. The whole package easily fits into the sheath (sold separately). If you need a light weight multitool that does (almost) everything, look no further.

I have been on the AT many times, and rain can dump on you for extended periods. My pack was NOT weather resistant, and my rain cover leaked like a sieve. Next time I would definitely go for something weather resistant. So, yea, it's definitely worth at least looking into.

Gregory Z 30 Backpack - 1650-1920cu in

Gregory Z 30 Backpack - 1650-1920cu in

Rating for this product: 4 November 15, 2010

This has been my go to pack for day hikes and such for a while. Construction seems sturdy to me if you take proper care of it. The middle is narrow though, so when you take things from the bottom you really have to move things out of the way. Also the hip belts are pretty bulky when not in use, but I just clip them to each other around the back of the pack so that they stay out of the way. Otherwise no problems at all. I like that it has multiple compression straps, and the back suspension is super comfortable. Recommended

Gregory Z 55 Backpack - 3112-3722cu in

Rating for this product: 3 November 15, 2010

Overall I have to say that I am satisfied with this pack. The only thing you have to do is make sure you don't put too much weight in it, or the back suspension starts to sag and get uncomfortable. I was hiking in a desert and needed a ton of water, and the suspension just couldn't handle it. I would say I was hauling around 40 lbs. If you keep the weight down, this pack is great.

Eagle Creek Hidden Pocket

Rating for this product: 4 November 13, 2010

Traveled 5 months in India and SE Asia with this baby. Fits nicely under your pants, but as mentioned before you NEED a belt for this to work. Wasn't a problem for me, as I use travel pants that come with a built in belt that I would just thread through the loop. Easily fits a passport, credit cards and some extra cash. Can be awkward taking things out, so all you need to do is have your passport or credit card ready right before you need them, then slip them back in when you get a chance. Recommended

Black Diamond Orbit Lantern

Rating for this product: 4 November 12, 2010

I love this lantern. Super small and light weight, yet very bright. Hooks on the top are perfect for hanging in a tent or on a branch. Battery could last a little longer, but it's to be expected with this much light. I also like the fact that instead of slowly getting dimmer and dimmer until it's useless, the lantern will keep going strong, warn you that it's low by flashing, then go out. I wish all lights worked like that.

Rating for this product: 3 November 12, 2010

Have had these for years, and they do what they're supposed to do. A good day hiker, not really meant for heavy duty backpacking, though I hiked all over India with them and they did pretty well. Rating for this product: 4 November 12, 2010

I have had this pack for a number of years, have hiked countless miles and traveled in numerous countries with it, and am pretty satisfied with it so far. I traveled 5 months in India and SE Asia with this bad boy and never once had a major problem. Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 12, 2010

Super warm jacket at a good price. Kept me warm while mountaineering in India or hiking in the Grand Canyon. Super versatile, and stuffs down pretty small to boot. The only thing I don't like is that the down in the bottom compartment in the back is a little lacking, and that the down in general has a tendency to come out of certain seams, but that is a known problem in all down jackets. Some are worse than others, and I'd say this one holds up pretty well. Overall I highly recommend it.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 12, 2010

People need to realize that you get what you pay for. If you are looking for an inexpensive super light weight and packable LIGHT rain shell, look no further. If there is a low chance of rain, but you want to be prepared, pop this baby in your pack. If heavy rain or snow is predicted, this is not the jacket for you. I have traveled 5 months in SE Asia and India with this jacket and it served me well, as I only used it for light rain showers. Recently I went hiking in the Grand Canyon, the 20% chance of rain pulled through and it dumped on us. Obviously this jacket was not right for that, but I knew the risks going in. Do your research and use this jacket for what it's made for, you won't be disappointed.
