Optimus Nova Stove

March 23, 2009

Slightly louder than you need to know that it is running. Some people find it slightly annoying, but as I said, its good to know that it is still running and hasn't blown out. Don't worry about it. It's definitely one of the best white gas stoves out there.

Great Stove - Nova better than Nova +

Optimus Nova Stove

Optimus Nova Stove

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2009

Great stove. Simmers good. Solid construction. Dependable design. Makes some noise while running, but that's good...you know its still running when using it in daylight. slightly awkward to pack down. Solid stove to use for hardcore backpacking/winter camping. Solid, stable base. You really don't get better than this with a white gas stove.

I recommend the nova over the nova +. The design of the Nova + is only different in that the whole fuel line rotates to control flow. In my opinion, you can't properly control the fuel valve with the fuel line flopping around, and can't get enough torque when you shut off the stove with the fuel valve from the previous run.

Perfect Pad for Snow Camping

Exped DownMat Sleeping Pad

Exped DownMat Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2008

Great sleeping pad for winter/snow camping. It's heavy for a pad, but light for the amount of R value (heat transfer resistance) you get. Very comfortable, but slow/difficult to inflate relative to typical thermorests. I would never use this pad for my typical three season camping (too heavy & too slow to inflate), but for winter, its the cat's meow.

Top notch Design, Fit, & Comfort

Gregory Palisade 80 Backpack - 4699-5370cu in

Gregory Palisade 80 Backpack - 4699-5370cu in

Rating for this product: 5 November 9, 2008

I have used a Palisade for 4 years. It's a fantsitc backpack. It handles loads BEAUTIFULLY. It is comfortableon the back, tight fitting, and nimble. Although a little on the heavy side, the fit, comfort and quality make up for this in spades. It has what you need, and minimizes and silly extras. Short of it...Buy it. Unless you want an ultra light backpack, you are not going to do better than this. Note: Osprey also makes good packs as well.

Great, light Stove for the Experienced Only

Snow Peak Giga Power WG Stove

Snow Peak Giga Power WG Stove

Rating for this product: 4 September 22, 2008

Great stove. Definitely better than msr whisperlite in terms of performance. Heat output is excellent. It has a wide range of output and simmers beautifully!. Additionally, what is great about this stove is its ability to be shut off, maintain pressure for a very long time (an hour in my case), and then to be able to relight easily without additional pumping. that's nice when you want your meal, and then coffee or tea later...support is excellent. soot was zero. No messy soot to deal with as compared to whisperlites (which always end up getting soot on bottom and then YOU). Folds up nicely. Light weight. Quality manufacturing (except see note below).

Lighting of stove DOES requiring priming...it's just very different than other white gas stoves. Requires lots of pumping to light, but overall performance is outstanding.

The only reason i didn't give it 5 stars is because its still not quite better than my old svea 123 coupled with the sigg tourist stacking aluminum cook set. otherwise, i'd give it a 5. Better than msr whisperlite (quality of manufacturing is definitely better too. Optimus Nova is also another great stove (especially for cold weather or international travel) that's worth looking at if you want a great liquid fuel stove, and want to be able to simmer (which msr whisperlite or simmerlites don't really do). 1st choice in stove - snowpeak wg, 2nd, optimus nova but only because its heavy(note: nova better than nova+), and msr whisperlite for outrageously bullet proof dependability.

Note: Had trouble in Alaska trip where fuel would not shut off. Created VERY dangerous situation, with fuel spirting everywhere. Manufacturer replaced valve.

Great Stove with + and -

Snow Peak Giga Power WG Stove

Snow Peak Giga Power WG Stove

Rating for this product: 4 September 22, 2008

Great stove. Definitely better than msr whisperlite in performance. Heat output excellent. Best simmer ever in a wg stove. Stove maintains pressure after shut off for a very long time (an hour in my case), and then to be able to relight easily without additional pumping. that's nice when you want your meal, and then tea later...Support is very good. Soot was zero. it's nice to be able to fold up without any soot on stove (whisperlite always ended up with soot on bottom(granted, it was never that bad...just annoying.)

Lighting of stove DOES requiring priming...it's just very different than other white gas stoves. Stove shoot white gas mist during priming. Stove instantly works, but will loose pressure quickly unless stove heats up and switch to a pure liquid mix....Strongly using a lighter instead of matches on this stove.

Stove deserves a 4+. Better than MSR whisperlite (though MSR's are cheap and dependable). Otimus nova is equally as good (especially for cold weather or international travel) but is heavier. 1st choice in stove - snowpeak wg, 2nd, optimus nova (not nova+), and finally MSR whisperlite for outrageously bullet proof dependability.

Note: Had problem with shutoff valve, but manufacturer replaced it.
