Rossignol S90W Skis

Rossignol S90W Skis

Rossignol S90W Ski - Women's

September 14, 2011

My girlfriend recently purchased a pair of the Rossignol S90W's for the upcoming ski season. Standing at only 5'2" and an intermediate level skier, we went with the 150 cm length. She's not the fastest skier, and will be able to play around in the trees (my favorite area) easier with this length. Why pay full price (like I did for my new S3's) for next years model when the only difference is the top sheet graphics? It's a beautiful ski, we've heard many great things about them, and she can't wait to use them this season. Don't wait as the 10/11 year model will sell out quickly as the season gets closer.

Smith I/OS Goggles

Smith I/OS Goggles

Smith I/OS Interchangeable Goggle

September 14, 2011

Here’s a picture of the Smith I/OS Goggles paired with the Smith Vantage helmet. I used these goggles all season last year and absolutely love them. I don't have a super large face, so the I/OS fit me a lot better than the I/O goggles. Although the I/O goggles were designed to fit seamlessly with the Vantage helmet, the I/OS's fit just fine as well. The lenses are extremely easy to change which is a bonus as the weather changes pretty quickly in the Rockies. I know they're not that cheap, but for two lenses and some amazing goggles I don't think you can do any better than the Smith I/OS.

Smith Vantage Helmet

Smith Vantage Helmet

Smith Vantage Helmet

September 14, 2011

Here’s a picture of the Smith Vantage Helmet paired with the Smith I/OS goggles. This helmet is by far the most comfortable and most adjustable helmet I've ever tried on. The diameter adjustment in the back is super easy and quick which allows you to make it larger when the temperatures drop and you have to put on the balaclava. There are two separate slides on the top of the helmet to allow you to open and close the front and back vents as you please. On cooler days when I'm skiing hard this is ideal because I can close the front vents to prevent cold air from hitting my head, but I can open the back vents to allow some of that hot moist air to escape. One other plus about this helmet is that it is pretty low profile for a ski helmet, so it earns some style points as well. Love it and plan on using it for many years.

Oakley Five Squared Sunglasses

Oakley Five Squared Sunglasses

Oakley Fives Squared Sunglasses

September 14, 2011

I absolutely love these glasses. I have a hard time finding glasses that don't look way too big on my small/medium sized face, but the Five Squared are perfect. The fit is great with a nice wrap around shape, the lenses don't really scratch at all (with a lot of abuse) and the frames are nice and sturdy. For only $80, you really can't beat 'em.

Outdoor Research Swift Cap

Outdoor Research Swift Cap

Outdoor Research Swift Cap

September 9, 2011

This is by far my favorite hat I've ever owned. I have 3 of these hats now, 2 in white and 1 in red. I absolutely love the white color, but unfortunately they don't sell it anymore. The hat itself breaths super well and fits my head perfectly. It doesn't come down so far that it touches the top of your ears like some other hats tend to do on me. The bill is nice and flexible and the inner material is unbelievably comfortable. I don't ever leave to go on a hike, climb, or even around town without it. I even take it with me skiing so that when we go out afterwords I can cover up my sweet helmet hair. Love this hat!

2012 Lange RX 130

2012 Lange RX 130

Lange RX 130 Ski Boot - Men's

September 2, 2011

Here's a picture of my 2012 Lange RX 130's. These are not the pro model which means the last on mine is 100 mm, not 97 mm as on the pro (otherwise the exact same). I have owned a few pairs of Lange boots in the past and as they did perform exceptionally well, they killed my feet by the end of the day. Not Anymore! As you've guessed, I haven't been able to try them out on the snow;however, I have sat around the house with them fully strapped up and they feel amazing. Very snug, but perfect like a glove fit. These boots look and feel amazing and I can't wait to use them this season.

2012 Rossignol S3 (178 cm)

2012 Rossignol S3 (178 cm)

Rossignol S3 Ski

September 2, 2011

Here's my setup for this year, 2012 Rossignol S3 and the 2012 Lange RX 130. These skis are amazing. One of the reps for Rossi lives in my condo complex in Vail and he let me demo a pair of 2011 S3's for a few days last year. I absolutely fell in love and had to get a pair for this season. These are the most forgiving and most fun skis I've ever used. Just be aware, they have a decent amount of rocker in the tip and tail so they ski much shorter on piste. I'm 5'7", 149 pounds and the 178 length is perfect for me. Buy 'em!

Hestra Heli 3-Finger Glove

Hestra Heli 3-Finger Glove

Hestra Heli 3-Finger Glove

September 1, 2011

I live in Vail, CO and ski every Saturday and Sunday, and sometimes during my lunch break. Last season I got out 47 days with almost 1,000,000 vertical feet skied. I purchased these gloves at the beginning of the season last year and they went with me everyday on the mountain. The claw design is amazing in that it gives you the ability to use your pointer finger, but still keeps those little digits on the end of your hand nice and warm. My only complaint is the lack of a waterproof membrane. I have the regular ones, without the gore-tex, and I really wish I had the others. I have used the Hestra wax, as well as two other brands to get these gloves as water repellent as possible, yet they still seam to get wet on those warmer days. I absolutely love these gloves, however, will probably be replacing them this year with the gore-tex version instead.

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe with Grip

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe with Grip

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe with Grip

January 21, 2011

This is the best general purpose mountaineering axe money can buy. It has a fairly thin area that connects the blade to the shaft that allows for a great and comfortable grip with thick gloves. Nice rubber grip on the handle that doesn't affect the ease of shoving the handle into the snow, but allows you to swing at will without the worry of the axe coming out of your hands. Not very technical, but perfect for climbing fairly mellow routes on Rainier, Baker, Hood, Shasta, and many others. Great axe.

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

January 21, 2011

I absolutely love this jacket. Packs small, super warm, and thin but strong outer shell. This jacket is a little short in the torso, which is a little annoying for wearing around town, but if you are planning on using it for its intended purpose, it leaves plenty of clearance for a harness and all your gear. This is my second one and I couldn't be happier. Great jacket.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

November 3, 2011

Hey Ward, you are correct that they are very similar. The Theta AR has basically the exact same fit as the Beta AR (athletic) with minor differences. Like you said, the Theta is longer and not just an inch or two, but several. I'm only 5'6" and I have the new Beta AR (which they extended the length a bit this year) and it fits my shorter torso perfectly. The Theta has a longer hem length, a slightly taller collar and an extra small pocket on the left arm which the Beta doesn't have. Also, I'm not sure which year jacket James Jenden was trying on, but both the Beta AR and the Theta AR have very large helmet compatible hoods. If you're tall or like longer jackets go with the Theta, if you're short like me go with the Beta. Hope this helps.

Atomic LF

Atomic LF 120 Alpine Ski Boot - Men's

Atomic LF 120 Alpine Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 September 19, 2011

I skied with this boot last season and I sort of have mixed feelings about them. The reason I'm only giving them 3 stars is because of the performance vs the price and overall concept. Let's just say these boots are for fat, and I mean super fat feet. I have a medium to wide foot, and my feet were way too narrow for these boots. The biggest positive about these boots is they are unbelievably comfortable. If you are an average to intermediate skier, who doesn't charge very hard, but either is on the heavier side or just likes stiff boots, than these are for you. I've had several different boots over the years, and these were by far the most comfortable. However, when it comes to controlling long fat skis in the powder, these struggled quite a bit. These boots have a nice stiff and smooth flex, which is awesome on the piste, but when you get into powder or crud, they just don't respond as fast as higher performance boots. If you have a fat foot, just likes to cruse on the mountain, are a little heavy or just likes stiff boots, I highly recommend. Unfortunately they just weren't right for me.

Triolet Jacket

Patagonia Triolet Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Triolet Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 19, 2011

I tried this jacket on in the local Patagonia shop this weekend in Vail, and I have to say I was pretty impressed. The Channel Blue color is just flat out awesome, and now that Patagonia has finally gone back to Gore-Tex instead of the H2No stuff, I'm a little more interested (haven't had the greatest luck with H2No in the past). I'll admit, there are certain things that I really dislike about Patagonia, and there are some things that are the greatest out there. As I'm sure everyone knows, Patagonia tends to make the men's jackets very boxy/square and short in the torso. I didn't try on everything at the store, but at least with this jacket, that's no longer the case. The torso length is spot on, and the jacket itself is a very nice relaxed, but not boxy fit. I went there with the girlfriend to try on a few things for her, and now because I can't help myself, I'm contemplating spending the cash for a new shell. My only complaint with this jacket is the arm length. Even in the size small, the arms are extremely long. Once you cinch up the wrist cuffs it's not a huge deal, but when I put my arms all the way in, you can't even see the ends of my fingers. They're that long. I understand for climbing (as I am a climber) it's better to have sleeves on the longer side, but these are a few inches too long. Other than that, which isn't a deal breaker, the jacket is awesome. Hopefully BC will be getting more of the Channel Blue color in size small in the near future?
