Line Mothership Alpine Ski

Line Mothership Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

This are some amazing skis. They are insanely stable and just beg to go fast, really fast. Standing atop any line with these on your feet, you only feel one thing, Confidence. I have skied them in everything from powder to groomers to the mankiest wet snow there is, and they destroy it all. The most suprising thing about these skis is their performance on groomers and in hard snow. They carve trenches, and crush any crud or variable snow that gets in your way. The tip rocker keeps you floating in the deep snow. If you ski hard, and can drive a ski, you need to check the motherships out. They don't get the press that other skis in this category get, but in my opinion are the best option out there. I have skied the legend pro, and the XXL, and prefer the mothership over both. Its stiff with a great flex pattern, and doesnt have the planky feel of the XXL.

Tubbs Mountaineer Series Snowshoe - Men's

January 6, 2009

It depends on how big your foot is. They certainly aren't meant to be used with one and hiking/snowshoeing in a snowboard boot would be quite uncomfortable. I'm not going to say no, a snowboard boot won't fit, because smaller sizes probably would, but certainly it's most likely that it wouldn't work.--I'd concur. Most snowshoe bindings aren't really designed for quite that wide of a boot. Plus, you'd likely want something a little lighter then most boarding boots. --I have to disagree with the fellas above. As long as you have a relatively low profile boot ( salomon f series, Ride UL, etc) Your boot should fit fine. Of course its hard to say for sure without trying, but the binding has a ton of range of adjustment, and I dont think there will be any problems at all. I know for a fact that the bindings on MSR Lightening Ascents will work with snowboard boots. My slowboarding friends have them, and use them regularly.

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Women's

November 20, 2008

"C'mon now...7 months?" Yes. I'm from Western NY. It's snows as early as October, and a few years ago we had an ice storm in April. I've since moved 6 hours of south of there where winter is at least a month shorter on both ends.I am from Utah, where I can remember snow as early as September and as late as late May, early June. This isn't a bad jacket for hard winters. In crazy cold weather it's better as a layer but other than that it's really a great jacket. You no fun having nerds changed my answer!!! ;) Alright, everyone thinks that where ever they live or grew up in has "the worst winters" yes it may snow in October or April, but a few weeks later it will be back to 55 and sunny. I have lived in the Upper Peninsula of MI, AK, and SLC. Winter, is when its dark, sustained cold temps, frozen ground, etc etc. AK is the only place to legitimately say the winters are 7 months long. Anyways, to answer the question, this jacket is for mild temps, or low temps during highly aerobic activities. In WINTER, it will not be warm enough. Its only 200 weight and not windproof.

Outdoor Research Primovolta Heated Glove - Men's

November 19, 2008

These do have a heater in the thumb, I think they would work well for an ATV. The heated liner makes the gloves rather bulky however. The battery lasts from 4-6 hours, and the battery is integrated into the glove liner, so the only way to have spare batteries would be to order another pair of gloves and bring the extra liner gloves with you.

Movement Skis Goliath Ski

Movement Skis Goliath Ski

Rating for this product: 5 October 31, 2008

I skied these last year at the snowbasin ski demo and was blown away. These skis are that ever elusive ski that is both light and nimble as well as stiff and stable. I was very impressed with this ski in any condition. In powder the ski has a float that is almost unmatched except by the "funshapes" They provide a very surfy feel that is a blast to ski. Once the snow got cut up the skis performed extremely well, slicing and dicing through the chop like it wasn't there. They were even a blast on the groomers, carving large radius turns like a champ. After skiing this ski I immediately switched to a Dynastar XXL 194 and between the two skis my vote goes to the Goliath hands down. Compared to the XXL these felt like they have a slightly softer tip for better float in pow and felt much more nimble as opposed to the tank feeling of the XXLs. Do not be intimidated by the long length, the 191 is the Goliath you want.

Adventure Medical Cuts and Bolts Essentials First Aid & Gear Repair Kit

Rating for this product: 5 April 2, 2008

I havent used this kit too much since I got it. But the few times I have, I was glad I had it. Once was on a ski tour and my buddys skin stopped sticking. We busted out the duct tape and headed up for another epic lap instead of having to call it for the day and head to the car. The kit is full of stuff you will probably never need but if you do this kit can be a trip saver. It has found a new permanent home in my backpack.

Volkl AC30 Titanium Alpine Ski w/ Motion iPT 12.0 Piston Binding

March 20, 2008

If you can already ski black trails then I do not think these skis will be too much ski for you at all. Volkl as a brand has a reputation as being big and stiff and unforgiving but with this ski thats not really the case. The AC30 is a moderately stiff ski, and if you get lazy it can toss you around a bit, but not near as bad as the AC40 or higher end volkls. This is a great ski for taking your skiing up a level. If you are content at staying more of an intermediate skier and cruising blue runs I would maybe suggest something else like the Rossi B2, but if you are looking for something to help you step it up a notch on the hill these are a great choice.

Armada ARG Limited Series Alpine Ski

Armada ARG Limited Series Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 March 20, 2008

Its hard to convince someone of the benefits of a reverse camber reverse side cut ski without just trying them yourself. However, do not try these skis without being prepared to buy. Because once you switch back to your regular skis, every powder run is spent dreaming about how sweet it would be on something rev/rev. Yes. The difference is that noticeable. These skis give you access to a whole new style of skiing. You start looking at the mountain in a different way. Basically, you start skiing like a snowboarder, and its damn fun. You can throw huge powder slashes with the best of them, easily dump speed after rocketing through a straightline, make turns in the tightest of trees with ease, stomp airs, and ski through chopped up pow like its untracked. On groomers they are very manageable, with the right tune these skis can carve(sort of) they do have sidecut underfoot, and traverse and ski groomers fine. These only get 4 of 5 stars because for a big guy like me(6'2" and 230) they are just not stiff enough to truly just charge down the hill and unleash terror. But after skiing these skis I had to get something similar, and when the dust settled from my spending fury, I had a pair of DPS Lotus 138s, now THOSE skis get 6 stars out of 5, but thats for a different review. Happy Shredding!

your new deep powder guns

K2 Pontoon Alpine Ski

K2 Pontoon Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 March 20, 2008

When you have the pontoons in their element (untracked bottomless pow) I don't think there is a better ski made. The combination of the fat rockered tip and the turned up tapered tale is just perfect. You find yourself taking each powder turn a little fast, then a little fast, then a little faster, until you are screaming down the run. Once you get these skis off the groomed and into the pow, they do anything, pivot, smear, carve (yes carve powder) I found myself seeking out little spines and rollovers and throwing up huge snowboarder style slashed. They also save your legs since you can stand centered on these skis. Once the powder gets tracked up the skis still handle fine, but riding through heavy chop, is exactly like water skiing through rough water, not all that enjoyable for me. The skis are soft and I felt like I was overpowering them in crud. They are more than manageable on groomers, and can even carve. If you are a charger and already savy to the rockered revolution I would look elsewhere(ARG, Lotus, Rocker), but if you are still rocking tradition shaped skis these would be a great introduction to the new style of skiing. You really can't go wrong. Get them. You know you want to.

Scarpa Universal Ski Boot Liner

March 18, 2008

Unless you really know what you are doing, its best to have it done at a shop. They have the right tools and an oven made specifically for heating intuition liners. If you do it in a regular oven you risk overheating the liner and shrinking it, or not cooking it evenly. Also it is tough to get the hot liner on and in the boot without having it wrinkle.

Backcountry.com Cardigan Beanie

Backcountry.com Cardigan Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 February 21, 2008

This is a pretty sweet hat, I use it skiing all the time, its warm but still a looser weave so that when you are hiking or skinning it vents heat very well. When you take a digger and your hat fills with snow, just a few shakes and the snow flies off, does not stick to the hat. Bonus.

Another cool thing is that since the weave is looser I can stick my sunglass arms through the hat if I want to keep them on my head or for when I want to wear them.

good not great

K2 Rant Helmet

K2 Rant Helmet

Rating for this product: 3 January 16, 2008

For the price this is a pretty good helmet. Its the only one I have ever seen that you have to wear the helmet over your goggles and beanie, otherwise it is not going to fit. If you don't like doing this, then this is not the helmet for you. With a beanie on, the fit is good, it does sit a little high but not any more than any other helmet. This is a good helmet for park riding, the only thing I don't like about it is that at high speeds (really high speeds) the helmet bounces around and will not stay put. If I am charging I always roll up to the liftline with a huge gaper gap because my helmet was bouncing around. As for fit, these fit huge, I wear a L in Giro and got a L in this helmet, it fits great over my goggles and hat, but without those on it fits huge.

Regular Edge = Old and Busted | Magnetraction = New Hotness

Lib Technologies NAS Freeride Alpine Skis

Lib Technologies NAS Freeride Alpine Skis

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2007

Wow...Is what I have to say about these skis. I have the Parillos in 188. All it took was one turn, and I am in love. The edge hold on hard snow is unbelievable, more than some race skis that I have skied on. The MagneTraction is not a do all end all cure for riding on hard snow but it feels like you are riding on rails once you set the edge. These skis are SO stable and want to carve everything. Due to the magnetraction and sidecut moguls and very high speed straightlines are the only trouble spots since it takes some work to get the skis to slide, instead of carve and like any ski with a big sidecut it can get a little squirrely at high speeds unless you keep them on edge. But who wants to ski moguls anyways? The construction is great, thick edges, bomber sidewalls and a sintered base. Bottom Line - These skis do it all. The carve groomers, crush crud, and float in powder. A true one ski (or should I say 2 snowboard) quiver.

Scarpa Universal Ski Boot Liner

Scarpa Universal Ski Boot Liner

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2007

If you ski more than a few weekends a year you owe it to yourself to pick up some intuition liners. These liners are incredibly warm, light, and once you get them molded to your foot the fit is amazing. I have a 11.5 foot and recently bought new boots in a size 27.5 which converts to a 9.5. After wearing the boots with the stock Lange liners my feet were in intense pain after 20 minutes . I picked up these Scarpa liners, heat molded them and blew out the toe area with a toe cap, and now the fit is perfect. Riding a smaller boot size has so many performance benefits, and intuition liners give you the comfort you need. These liners are made of ULTRALON, when you heat them up and put them on the liner molds to fit your foot exactly. Regular liners say they can be heat molded but in actuality all they are doing is speeding up the break in process. These liners are not and end all do all for all boot fitting problems, but an essential piece for a serious skier. When you get new boots, throw away the stock liner, and get yourself some Intuitions, you will not regret it.

Patagonia Slopestyle Hoody - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2007

Just like the other reviews say this is one kickass hoody. I needed something for fall biking and spring skiing, I was going to go with a much more expensive soft shell but this does everything a softshell does, and looks great! The sleeves have thumb holes, the hood is enormous, easily fits a ski helmet, and there are 2 stash pockets for your keys or mp3 player or whatever. The jacket feels thin, but is super warm, its not windproof but does cut the wind. I'll say it again, this is my new favorite hoody! 5 out ot 5 stars easy.

A winter bag this is not, but it has served me well as a spring and summer bag so far this year. I like that it is not a full mummy, just so I don't roast on warmer nights. Its roomy, and I love the big agnes system. I used to always slide off my sleeping pad, not a problem anymore. I have used the bag, with the insulated air core mummy pad down to about 30 degrees, and stayed pretty warm. The best part is that I can leave the pad in the bag, and still pack them all down into the stuff sack for the bag, great for backpacking!

Mountain Hardwear Maestro Backpack - 4000cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2007

This pack is very complicated to set up, and takes quite a bit of tweaking to get the fit perfect, but once you do, the fit is amazing. This pack uses more of a collar instead of the regular shoulder straps, and the load distribution is amazing. The weight goes right to the hip belt and the mobility of the hip belt is awesome. You can bend over to tie your shoes and the pack moves right with you. My only minor gripes with this pack are that there is no side access to the main compartment, it is top load only, and when I got the pack it would not adjust to the longest torso length, I had to take the pack off the frame and fiddle with it to get it to extend all the way, but besides those two things, great pack, and highly recommended!

I have used this helmet for about 10 days. It is great, I like it much better than my giro 9 I have been using. Not only does it look better, but its lighter, has only one removable vent plug, much easier to keep track. The ear pads are easily removed for spring skiing, and I will even be using this helmet with the liner pulled out for summer dirt jumping and bombing hills on my T-Board. For sizing I am a Large in Giro, and the smith in XL with a thin helmet liner fits me perfect.

Lange Fluid 120 Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 20, 2007

These are great boots, and a much needed upgrade for me. Wide footers beware, the fluid series is wider than most langes, but still is not that wide of a fit. I still had to get some boot fitting done to get these babies styled out and fitting great. I normally wear a 11-11.5 shoe and went with a 27.5 for a snug performance fit, so take that into account. These boots are great, have a smooth flex, and they are nice a light, a welcome change coming off my old clunkers.

The perfect goggles to go with your canadian tuxedo

Anon Realm Leather Goggles

Anon Realm Leather Goggles

Rating for this product: 4 January 30, 2007

I have not had a goggle fit better than the Anon Realm, you seriously do not notice you have them on, no nose pinch, not discomfort at all. And they come in a denim model, what more could you ask for. These goggles are the hotness. Perfect for rocking with no hat, and a demin jacket with the sleeves ripped off to show off your tats

Thule Snowboard Carrier

Thule Snowboard Carrier

Rating for this product: 4 January 30, 2007

This rack installs quick, fits any factory or aftermarket rack. I like it because it is not as wide as the 724 and so it fits next to my Thule box very well.

CamelBak Hellion Hydration Pack - 1404 cu in

CamelBak Hellion Hydration Pack - 1404 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2007

This pack is great, lots of little pockets to stow away all your gear, fits both skis or snowboards, and is still small enough to fit onto a chairlift without feeling like you are about to fall off at any moment

meh. Buy a real filter instead

Katadyn Micro Microfilter Water Bottle

Katadyn Micro Microfilter Water Bottle

Rating for this product: 2 January 30, 2007

Got this for solo backpacking trips in order to save weight. The only time this really works is if you are always near a water source, the filter takes up so much room that there is not much room for water in the bottle and you have to filter into a nalgene anyways. Me and my bro were doing this, and the filter busted, so it wasn't filtering at all. We had to boil and then drink lukewarm lakewater..yuck. bottom line, get a real filter.

warm but bulky

Burton Profile Under Glove - Men's

Burton Profile Under Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 11, 2007

These are great gloves at a low price. They are very warm and I love undergloves for my jacket. Since it has the inner cuffs or "bum gloves", I can put the glove on and cinch my jacket cuff over the top to create an impenetrable snow barrier. The only problem I see is that the padding on these gloves is very thick in the palms, fine for snowboarders but I ski, so I would like less padding for a better grip on my poles. Besides that, great gloves, and great price.

restore the steeze to your skis

Nikwax Tech Wash

Nikwax Tech Wash

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2007

So I am riding at my local hill, slowly creaking my way up the 2 person fixed grip when an unwanted gift from the ski gods falls into my lap, a giant glob of axle grease. My Burton white-ish pants were covered in the stuff. But never fear! Nikwax Tech wash to the rescue! Once through the wash and my pants look like new. A second wash with Nikwax wash in waterproofer and now they look and perform better than new. My steeze is restored and I am a happy skier.

MagneTraction = new hotness = Regular Edge = Old and Busted

Lib Technologies Narrow Ass Snowboards Alpine Ski

Lib Technologies Narrow Ass Snowboards Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 3, 2007

Wow...Is what I have to say about these skis. I have the Parillos in 188. All it took was one turn, and I am in love with these skis. The edge hold on hard snow is unbelievable, more than race skis that I have skied on. The MagneTraction feels like you are riding on rails, no matter the condition. These skis want to carve everything. You better have your "new school" style, older straight down the fall line skidding turns do not happen on these bad boys. Moguls are the only trouble spot since it takes some work to get the skis to slide, instead of carve, the magnetraction and sidecut really work against you. But who wants to ski moguls anyways? The construction is great, thick edges, bomber sidewalls and a sintered base.

Bottom Line - These skis rule, Get them

Got this to replace my old worn out Royal Robbins base layer. This shirt is awesome at regulating temperature, and wicking away moisture. The no stink quality is also great - great value and worth the purchase for sure!

Franken sock

X-Socks Ski Light Socks - XXL Cuff - Men's

X-Socks Ski Light Socks - XXL Cuff - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 19, 2006

I guess I was behind the times in the advancement of ski sock technology but these socks rule! I used to ski in thin liners to get a solid fit in my boot, but these socks are great - they are thick where they need to be thick, thin where they need to be thin, and stretchy where they need to be stretchy. The XXL cuff fits over my mammoth biking induced super calfs, don't move an millimeter throughout the day, and keep my feet warm and dry.
