Pasadena, California -
Bio:
I spend most of my hours tinkering away in a lab at Caltech, but I escape as often as possible to the nearby San Gabes, the high Sierra, or to grit it out on the dirty streets of LA. My winters are spent close to home in the BC interior.

These might be some of the weirdest looking shoes I've ever worn, but who cares when they run like a dream? Light, super grippy, and with lots of cushion for those epic runs that require a lot of climbing and descending, I definitely hope the grip holds up over time, progress report to come.

Loose Work Gloves
Mountain Hardwear Pistolero Glove
May 1, 2011
I would get a smaller pair next time - should have looked at the sizing a little closer! I used to be L in most gloves, but now I am noticing that my hand is in the M category. These run a bit baggy which would be OK for big powder gauntlets, but not as useful for work gloves. My hands measure 7.5x3.5 inches.
The picture shows the appearance after a hard day handling wet snow - no leakage to the hands despite obvious saturation of the outer leather. Sweet!

A Bit Too Soft for Rocks...
CAMP USA XLC 390 Crampon
October 12, 2010
These crampons are sweet for walking on hard snow, non-vertical ice, and a bit of rock but you will definitely notice the short lifespan of the points if you use them on rock over long climbs or multiple days. But for safety/stability, I can't tell any difference between these and steel point crampons. Grind away!

Nanotechs on the Summit Ridge of Finsteraarhorn
CAMP USA XLC Nanotech Crampon
October 12, 2010
Dan tackles a bit of scrambling on the mixed summit ridge of Finsteraarhorn in the Berner Alps. These crampons are super light and fit really snug on ski boots, but have the added bonus of stronger steel points for those (all too often) times when getting after some rocks is part of the ascent. My regular XLC crampons are just a bit too soft for extended mixed climbing like this...

This axe is for general mountaineering and is a perfect entry level and lifelong tool for use in lots of goals. Renato (pictured) has a shorter length for ski mountaineering since it fits on his pack better, but I prefer the 70cm for ease of use. This thing can take a lot of abuse!

Six Pairs (!) of Freerides in a Storm
Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding
October 11, 2010
All six of us had Fritschi Freeride Pluses on this tour in the Urner Alps, and when conditions get rough, there is nothing better than being able to count on your equipment. Fritschis are simply bombproof, and make quick work of climbing in any conditions. These guys are guides and avid skiers - not enough can be said about the ubiquity of these bindings on hard tours in the Swiss Alps.

Big, Heavy, Well-Suited for Travel in the Alps
DAKINE Concourse Double Ski Bag
March 22, 2010
The trains in Switzerland are definitely equipped for luggage this big, but I am not sure of where else you could get away with it. A weekend's worth of touring and mountaineering gear, food, and extra clothes for afterward easily fit - with 1 pair of skis/boots, mind you. You could fit 2 pairs, but then would have almost no room for other gear.
My 190cm BD Verdicts fit perfectly into the 185 Concourse double, side by side. Win!

Wild Country Ropeman Ascender
December 10, 2011
The main difference here is weight and size - a handled ascender is more convenient and easy to use, but if you're not planning to use it, or if you're going light and fast, the Ropeman is way less to carry around.

There should be enough space to barely slide a thick card (like a business card) but more space than a piece of standard printer paper. The thick card should come out, but it will be tight. Try talking to your local ski tech, he would probably be willing to look at it and show you for free.

Black Diamond Verdict Ski
May 9, 2009
Pablo, the relation of your body height to ski length is one that differs from skier to skier. Where I ski, more advanced riders typically like longer skis for stability at speed - however, some terrain demands shorter skis to make turning easier (eg. steep couloirs). If you like the feel of a long stable ski, you could go even longer than 170 Verdicts, it's up to you. I think any "everyday" skier should be able to ski the 170s no problem.

Karhu Team 100 Telemark Ski
May 7, 2009
These are definitely lighter on the feet than I expected, but I think something like the Kilowatt holds a slightly stronger line in the crud. For a resort ski though, these really do it all very well. Lively, surfy (for a mid fat), and confidence inspiring are words that come to mind (skiing 186s with Dukes as an everyday ski). And of course, carves just fine on the cord getting back to the lift.
