Warm and Water-resistant

The North Face Denali Full-Zip Fleece Hoodie - Boys'

The North Face Denali Full-Zip Fleece Hoodie - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2011

I LOVE this jacket. I ordered a size 10-12 for my 10-year-old and a size 14-16 for my 13-year-old. My older son is on the small side. This jacket fits him fine, with a little room to grow. He'll probably be able to wear it next year, when he's 14, too. My younger son is in the 70th %tile for height and weight. The size 10-12 fits him perfectly now, but I think it will be too small next year. At $116.00 this is distressing! I wish I had also ordered him a size 14-16; I think it would have been fine. I feel this jacket runs true to the smaller size listed (so a 10-12 is more like a 10 and a 14-16 is more like a 14.) My boys both wanted black, so I bought 2 blacks, but I LOVE the colors that are available! This jacket is warm and lightweight - my kids think it is soft and cozy. It's slightly water repellent, so it's good for being out at recess in a drizzle. A pouring/soaking rain is no match for this jacket, but it wasn't designed for that. This is a great jacket for fall hikes and other outdoor activities. It will also be great for skiing on those warm/sunny ski days when you tend to get too hot in a parka. I think it's definitely worth the money, but at this price you might consider ordering up a size.

Fun Hat!

Skullcandy Two Faced Beanie

Skullcandy Two Faced Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2011

I bought this for my 10-year-old, even though it is an adult hat. It is really fun! There are actually holes where the sunglasses are, so you can pull it down over your eyes. How fun is that?!? When you do that the sides and back also get pulled down, and your ears and neck are nice and toasty. I LOVE that. Perfect for windy winter days.

Even though this is an adult beanie, I ordered this for my 10-year old. It's a bit large, but he loves that he can pull it down over his eyes and see through the holes! This position will keep his ears and back of his neck warm on those really windy winter days.

Cool Tee

DC Skatekeeper T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Boys'

DC Skatekeeper T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2011

I ordered this for my 13-year-old who just started Middle School. I am trying to find him some "cool" and "grown-up" tees for Middle School. He likes the grave keeper graphic on this tee, but wishes it didn't say "Skateboarding" since he's not a skateboarder. I ordered this in the purple color b/c I think the graphic is more dramatic on the purple than the white. He might have preferred the white. He has always liked purple, though, so I think he's OK with it. He's not the kind of kid who bows to peer pressure. True to size. Nice, thicker t-shirt material.

Billabong Uncle Stoke Recycler T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2011

I ordered these in blue for both my sons, ages 10 and 13. They LOVE them! Really cool and funny too. The t-shirt is made from that new thinner t-shirt material, not the thick (ie, Hanes Beefy Tee) material. We're OK with that. That seems to be the style for young men/boys these days. True to size.

Awesome Jacket!

The North Face Vestamatic Triclimate Jacket - Boys'

The North Face Vestamatic Triclimate Jacket - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2011

I got this for my 13-year-old son and it is perfect! He doesn't like the jackets that layer with a removable fleece liner because the liner always gets pulled out of place in the sleeves when he takes his jacket off, making it difficult to put back on. This is especially true if you get a bit sweaty and once you have removed the fleece liner and worn it separately. This coat has a removable vest. My son finds that cool. He will definitely use the pieces separately, especially since the vest is reversible. I bought him the yellow and black version of this coat. I think he would have liked a different lining color than yellow, but he likes the black coat, and wouldn't have liked the blue or red as much. This will be great for skiing and other winter sports this winter, as well as for wearing to school

Quiksilver Lambert Polo Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2011

This is EXACTLY the kind of shirt I look for for my 13-year-old to wear to church, piano recitals, the theater, etc. It is cool/stylish enough that he will wear it (both the Quicksilver brand and in looks), and appropriate in my opinion. So many collared shirts have skulls, etc on them and I don't feel those are appropriate, especially for church. This one looks great and is good quality. True to size.

Shrinks quite a bit

Patagonia Earth Mechanic T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Boy's

Patagonia Earth Mechanic T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Boy's

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2011

Love, this tee, but, beware - it shrinks A LOT. I washed this size M (10) tee before my size 10 son wore it. It shrank so much it is a bit small. It's post washing measurements are: 15" underarm to underarm and 21" from shoulder to bottom hem. It's almost winter here and I'd like him to be able to wear this next spring and summer. No worries, Backcountry sent me a label to return this and will exchange it for a larger size. Great customer service! If your child is on the larger side of his size range, you might consider ordering a size up.

Teva Hurricane 2 Sandal - Boys'

Rating for this product: 4 February 3, 2011

I agree with the previous reviewer that these run big. But not 2 sizes. I bought these now (2/11), while they're on sale, for the upcoming summer. They seem to be about a size too big - definitely not 2 sizes. I think that they will be fine in 5 months and maybe they'll even fit next summer. I'd only order down 1 size, or a half size.

Skullcandy WTF Reversible Beanie

Skullcandy WTF Reversible Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 February 2, 2011

Nice hat - since it's reversible, it's 2 knit layers, which makes it a bit thicker and warmer than some hats. This is a bit large on my 12-year-old, but the kids hats are all too small. At least this one comes down over his ears and down to his neck. He LOVES it. It's plenty roomy. fits my hubby, and he has a large head. Cool graphics. We got the black/gray color - the background is gray and the skull is black.

KEEN Newport H2 Sandal - Youth

Rating for this product: 5 February 2, 2011

Got this now (Jan, '11) when they're on sale, for the upcoming summer. These are great shoes. My kids have had them before. I love the toe and heel protection on this style. My kids wear them all summer long, walking on land and in water. In the spring and fall, they wear them to school with socks (closed toes, so they're OK.) After all that, the shoes would still be good for another season. Too bad my kids feet grow!

Quiksilver Metatron Visor Beanie

Quiksilver Metatron Visor Beanie

Rating for this product: 1 February 2, 2011

We're really bummed. Bought this for my 12-year-old. WAY too small. Even too small for my 9-year-old. Gonna have to pay to return it. Fits, but doesn't pull down over middle ears or down to hairline in back. Won't keep you warm on cold days. Very stylish if you're wearing it just for looks.

Good Travel Backpack

Pacsafe VentureSafe 20L Day Pack

Pacsafe VentureSafe 20L Day Pack

Rating for this product: 4 July 12, 2010

This is the wrong picture. The photo added by a buyer is correct.

I used this pack for a 10-day trip to Germany. I felt that my personal items were very secure. The fabric is supposed to be slash proof. I assume it is , but I can't say for sure, as no one tried to slash my bag (thankfully!) This pack has 2 compartments: the main compartment and a front pocket. Both compartments zip up to close. When closed, the zipper pulls (which are some type of metal wire) can be clipped to the bag. This would make it VERY difficult for someone to unzip your bag without you knowing. Also, when closed, the zippers are hidden (under fabric or mesh), so presumably a would-be-thief wouldn't see them right away. After you zip/close the main compartment, there are 2 straps that can be closed over the zipper on each side, so even if a thief began to unzip this bag, the straps would stop the zipper's progress. There is also a chest strap that you can close so no one can pull this pack off of your body. There are 2 outside mesh pockets on each side of the pack for water bottles, etc. This was very convenient. The shoulder straps and chest strap can be adjusted.

The main thing I did not like about this bag is that there are no additional inside compartments. It would be nice to have at least one or two separate pockets inside the main body of this bag. Most "normal" or "regular" backpacks have this. Without one, everything is jumbled together inside the bag (wallet, camera, hair brush, umbrella, passports, chapstick, sunscreen, first-aide kit, etc.) This makes it unnecessarily difficult to find things. Another negative is that if you want to "clip" the main compartment zipper for safety, it can only be done at the bottom of one side of the pack. It would be a nice added feature to be able to clip the zipper pulls at the top center of the bag and at the other side, as well.

This back pack was smaller than I had thought (It is smaller than the average school backpack) - but it is a good travel size for travel.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. I would have liked some additional internal pockets, but it was OK as it is. This back pack was lightweight. The black color is nondescript. I recommend this bag, although there might be a better

Awesome Youth Pack!

Mountainsmith Youth Scout Backpack - 3355cu in

Mountainsmith Youth Scout Backpack - 3355cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2010

I bought this for my 11-year-old son who was going on his first Boy Scout Backpacking trip. For under $110, this is a GREAT pack. It is lightweight and durable. It has a nice external frame, and enough pockets to separate items, but not so many that you forget where you put stuff. There are 2 external pockets on the left side and one long external pocket on the right, plus the bigger, square external pocket on the back. There is also a pocket on the top flap. My son's Camelbak fit perfectly in this pocket, and the zipper stayed closed even with the drinking hose extending out. The sleeping bag sling is very handy. This pack is VERY roomy. We packed this with all my son's required gear (clothes, mess kit, first aid kit, survival kit, compass, toilet paper, full body rain suit, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc.) Then we added his food and a tent - and there was room to spare! The waist/hip band is highly adjustable. My son is VERY skinny (60% for height, but only 40% for weight) and I was a little worried that it wouldn't go small enough, but it did! It adjusts at the chest, too. Backcountry's description states that this pack comes with a safety whistle, but it did not.

Kept my Son's Backpack Dry

Granite Gear Cloud Cover Pack Fly

Granite Gear Cloud Cover Pack Fly

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2010

I purchased this for my 11-year-old son who was going on a Boy Scout backpacking trip. This seemed a bit expensive for a plastic cover. I mean, wouldn't a tarp or poncho do? But, I am SO glad I bought this b/c it rained and it rained hard! I checked my son's pack, and bought the right size. He was able to put it around his pack with no trouble. When he got home, this cover was wet and dirty/muddy, but his pack was dry! It folds up into a small attached sack (estimate about 3X2X2") and is lightweight. My son told me it was great! He was glad he had it. He took it to overnight camp this week to cover his duffle bag, which is about the same size as his pack. This cover is smaller and less cumbersome than a tarp. I believe he'll get a lot of use out of this, so it was worth the money!

Versatile

Kelty Cardinal Backpack - 1100 cu in

Kelty Cardinal Backpack - 1100 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 May 19, 2010

This is a very versatile pack. It changes from a lumbar/fanny/waist pack to a back pack. You can open the top zipper and pull out a nylon section with shoulder straps. However, this pull out section was very thin. I wanted this for traveling in Europe, and I was concerned that the thinness would not hold my "stuff" securely, and also that it might tempt thieves. However, I think that for other purposes, this might be just the right item. If you want to travel light, but think you might bring home more than you leave with, this could be for you.

I ordered these for my 11-year-old son b/c he is going on a backpacking trip with his patrol (Boy Scouts) in a few weeks. He had a chance to try them out this past weekend when his friend invited him along on a camping trip. It was cold and drizzly. He told me that these pants kept him warm and dry, so he really likes them. They have an adjustable waste, so you know they'll fit. They dry quickly. The bottoms can be zipped off for wading in water. There are plenty of pockets to hold stuff too!

I ordered this for my 11-year-old b/c he is going on a backpacking trip with his Scout patrol in a few weeks. He went camping with a friend 2 nights ago. It was quite cold, and I thought it might even rain. So, I sent this along for him to wear. When he came home he said that he loved it! He said that it kept him warm even though his is very skinny (ans always cold). He wore it as a shirt under his winter coat. This shirt definitely does what it's supposed to do. It is comfortable and keeps your kid warm! It is not cotton, so I suspect it dries quickly too.

Terrific Sandal

KEEN Newport Sandal - Youth

KEEN Newport Sandal - Youth

Rating for this product: 5 April 13, 2010

I don't know if the correct name is listed (see previous reviews), but the sandal pictured is the sandal I received. My 11-year-old wore it on our Spring Break, every day for 8 days, without socks. He was very comfortable and had no problems. He didn't complain about his legs or feet hurting and didn't develop any blisters. The army color pictured is what we received. My son has a narrow foot, so he likes that he can tighten the width with the "bungee" cord. It is very easy to adjust this shoe to different foot widths. It was great for walking long distances and by the pool. I recommend this sandal.

Fox River VVS LV Ski Sock

Fox River VVS LV Ski Sock

Rating for this product: 5 March 2, 2010

I bought this for my husband. He learned to ski 3 years ago so that he could ski with our 2 boys. We live 15 minutes from a ski hill, so even though we aren't/weren't skiers, most kids here ski, and we want our kids to be able to ski with there friends. My husband taught himself. So, he is not the best skier, nor is he really "into" skiing, like some men. He doesn't go on long ski trips or vacations. He skis every other weekend, or so, for 4-6 hours with our 8 and 11 year old sons. He has worn these socks a few times and says they are fine. My husband is not the type of man to use words like "great," "terrific," ore "wonderful." However, they fit to size and were not bulky in his ski boots. He said his feet were warm. So, I'd say he gives them a "thumbs up."

He has worn it several times and says it is, "fine." That's the best I usually get from him, he never uses words like "great," "terrific," or "wonderful." So I'd say this helmet does its job. It came with extra pads that can be placed inside the helmet to adjust the fit, but he wears a fleece skull cap under it for warmth and has had no issues with fit.

I ordered these for my 8-year-old (size 13) in navy. Plus they were perfect for when he got wet on water rides and splashed (soaked) by Shamu. They held up really well, and he will wear them next month when we are in D.C. for a week and then this summer. They fit his his foot well, and adjust easily. I purchased these for my sons (7 and 10) 1/09 on sale. I bought them a size larger than what they wore in Sept. hoping that they fit this summer. They seem a bit narrow. This is great for my older son, as his feet are very narrow. But they are a bit tight and long on my younger son. They are a good price, so I am keeping them in the hopes that his foot grows. But, I don't know about the narrowness. There is no way to adjust the width over the top of the foot

Great Basic Ski/Snow Pant

Spyder Action Pant - Boys'

Spyder Action Pant - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

These pants just arrived in the mail and I'm REALLY happy! They fit my 10-year-old son perfectly! They have an adjustable waist, which really helps with fit. I was a bit unsure whether to purchase a size 8 or 10, because he is currently a perfect size 9. (Some size 10 regular pants are WAY too long, while some size 8's are WAY to short! Sears sells some regular pants in boys size, 9 and those fit my son perfectly.) But, for ski pants I had to choose between a size 8 or 10. So, I checked the size charts of several different brands of ski pants here on Backcountry.com. They really helped. For some brands the inseams were longer on the size 10. For my son, the inseams for Spyder ski pants, seamed like they might fit with boots on. So, I took a chance and they fit great! I HIGHLY recommend checking the size charts before ordering - they are a great help. Theses pants are also great because, in addition to the adjustable waist, the length can be extended when your child grows. So, I know these pants will fit for at least 2 winters (maybe 3).

Runs Small

Spyder Fire Hat - Boys'

Spyder Fire Hat - Boys'

Rating for this product: 3 October 17, 2008

I bought this hat for my 7-year-old and it barely fits. It just covers the very tops of his ears, which is fine much of the time, but won't "cut it" on really cold, windy days. My son really likes the cool flames and how the spider stands out (in higher relief than the rest of the hat), so I plan to keep it. But, I'm a bit bummed that he won't get more than one season out of it. My son probably has a big head like his father, but I would estimate that this hat would fit preschool through grade 2, and not much higher. This hat only comes in one size, so buyers don't have much choice.

Warm and Cozy

Columbia Snow Day Winter Boot - Boys'

Columbia Snow Day Winter Boot - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

These boots arrived in the mail the other day, and when my 10-year-old son tried them on he was really happy. He said that they were very comfortable and light (last year's Lands End boots were heavy!) He also really likes that they simply slip on and off (with a velcro strap for tightening at the ankle) because he dislikes having to tie laces or secure clasps, etc. At this price, these boots are a great value, as well. They'll be perfect for stomping around the playground this winter and for wearing to the ski hill on weekends.

I bought this hat for my now 10-year-old son 2 years ago, when he was 8. He LOVES it! He's worn it for 2 winters and it still fits. It still looks great, too. It stretches and is warm!

Smaller than Expected

CamelBak Skeeter Hydration Pack - Kids'

CamelBak Skeeter Hydration Pack - Kids'

Rating for this product: 3 July 30, 2008

I bought this for my 7 and 9 year old sons. They LOVE it, but it doesn't hold much water. The tag states that this Camelbak's capacity is 35 oz. or 1 L, but it seems smaller than that. It states that this Camelbak weighs 2.9 lbs. filled and measures 12" X 7" X 1". I wish I had been aware of the measurements and capacity before I purchased this pack, because I would have purchased a larger Camelbak instead. The tag states that this pack is for ages 5 and up, but I feel that kids who are 7 and up need a hydration system with a larger capacity. This Camelback is probably perfect for kids 6 and under.

Small Perfect for Kids

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 July 30, 2008

I bought the small size for each of my children (ages 7 & 9) to take to camp. They are on the short side - both the boy's feet hang off the end. But, the pads are light and easy to pack. My boys don't mind their feet hanging off. And, the price was great!
