Western Mountaineering Meltdown Down Jacket - Men's

Western Mountaineering Meltdown Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2011

This jacket has been a life saver. Sort of. I've actually never been in a position to have my life saved before. That I know of. The jacket is very warm and the hood is a big plus. Use the hood when you need it and put it back in it's zippered neck compartment when you don't. It's very warm and a good addition for anyone wanting to make sure they will be warm in the winter. I had to break mine out over the new year while winter camping around lake Tahoe. The temps were much colder than expected so I just put the jacket on and slid back into my sleeping bag. Kept me toasty warm. All in a very lightweight package and super compressible. As a note, you can't hide the hood on the fly. You have to take the jacket off to stuff the hood back inside its compartment. There has been a tiny loss of feathers but nothing major. Not yet. This jacket is really built to last and it should for the price.
I'm 6'0 85 athletic build and the large is perfect. Especially when you have some layers underneath.

Marmot Helium EQ Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

December 2, 2010

I had a chat with a marmot rep and was basically told that the new membrane is the same as the old EQ fabric. They just had to change the name of the fabric. The pretex shell is lighter than the membrane though. Which I actually prefer

Stoic Luft Insulated Sweater - Men's

Stoic Luft Insulated Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 7, 2010

Same issues as some other reviewers. Insulation coming out and stitching coming apart. Which isn't good when you pay that much for a jacket and there is only 100g of insulation to get rid of. I used it skiing a few days and it worked fairly well to regulate temperature and was fairly water resistant but the build is a bit questionable. I might purchase again if it came up on SAC.

2 Person

Sierra Designs Hyperlight Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Sierra Designs Hyperlight Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 3 January 29, 2009

Very stable tent and very water proof. However, the description is pushing the limits by calling it a 3 person tent. Not sure who designed this tent but two people over 5'10 don't fit well. The tent ends in a V shape. Which doesn't really work well for a tent. Might work well for smaller folks. The vestibules are accommodating for gear so you do save a bit of room there. Build quality good but design poor.

Snow Peak Titanium Double Wall Cup 600

November 9, 2008

I use the lid from my Mini Solo Cookset. Snow Peak doesn't have a separate lid for this cup. Go to backcountrygear.com. They have the lid for this cup, made by snowpeak. Not sure why backcountry doesn't.

MontBell Ultralight Down Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ultralight Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 20, 2007

Never pull the feathers out of your jacket or sleeping bag. This is a common mistake. Simply grab the feather from the inside of the jacket and pull it back inside. Don't pull out the down.
My patagonia down sweater has the same problem.

Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 7, 2006

Not overly impressed with the Rain Shadow. Used the jacket in Rocky Mountain NP during a big rainstorm. Cuffs were soaked through as were the shoulder areas. What happened with the so called "waterproofness" of this jacket?
