Great all-around trail shoe

Vasque Velocity VST Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Vasque Velocity VST Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 13, 2010

This is my sixth or seventh pair of Vasque Velocity shoes (I'm training for a 100-mile run and am putting in a lot of mileage these days) and I love them.

Lots of room in the toes, but a good snug fit through the arch & heel. Placement of eyelets allows for a couple different lacing patterns, so if one part of your foot starts to rub after 20 or 30 miles, you can switch the lacing a bit and relieve the pressure.

Good traction, good breathability, and good drainage in snowy and muddy conditions.

Say goodbye to blisters

injinji Performance Mini-Crew Toe Sock

injinji Performance Mini-Crew Toe Sock

Rating for this product: 5 December 13, 2010

Yes, these socks look funny.
They feel a little odd the first time you put them on.
But give them a chance, and you'll be a convert to these funny-looking toe socks. I'm training for a 100-mile race and wear these on all my long runs (20-60 miles) and have yet to get any blisters when wearing them. They prevent your toes from rubbing together, and the fabric itself doesn't chafe at all.

Give these socks a try, and say goodbye to blisters!

A big, stiff shoe

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 May 26, 2010

Ordered these after wearing some very lightweight, close-to-the ground trail runners because I was adding distance to my training and didn't want to feel every root & pebble on the trail. I got that with these Solomons, and then some. These shoes are VERY stiff - I was getting hot spots on the ball of my foot & the front part of my arch after just 7 or 8 miles. They may start to flex a bit more with more use, but at this point (with just a few miles of wear) I'm using them to mow the lawn in & not much else, because I've rarely gotten blisters from my running shoes and am not that keen to continue getting blisters in these, on the off chance that they may start to flex with wear.

One other note: these shoes run VERY big. I generally wear a size 8 in regular shoes (order 9s for running shoes) and after reading reviews indicating this model runs large, I ordered 1/2 size smaller than I would usually order (8.5). I should have ordered an 8. The shoes are just too big for me.

It's clear that the shoes are well designed, and the lacing system is cool, but for whatever reason they're not working well for me personally. Order smaller than you think you'll need.

As great as advertised

Montrail Continental Divide Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Montrail Continental Divide Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 11, 2006

These shoes are every bit as great as described. They're snug in the heel and arch, and roomy in the toes, even going downhill. The cushioning is remarkable—very springy, even under the forefoot, which feels great on those pounding downhills. The shoes are well ventilated: mesh in the toes as well as along the sides. A great trail running shoe with a fantastic fit.
