  • Stomping Grounds:

Stuck in a cubicle during the week. Weekends I hit up the nearest available outdoor playground. Little Cottonwood, Tahoe, Lake Michigan are my faves.
  • Bio:

I am a weekend warrior. I work all week so that I can cut loose and get outside on the weekends. Fortunately, my job puts me close to some pretty sweet places. In the winter, I'm all about skiing. I'll go just about anywhere if there is a chance for deep pow and a couch for me to sleep on. My summers are laid back. I ride my bike, backpack, take in a few games at Wrigley, and work on my golf game.

Giro 2008 Fuse Bluetooth Audio Helmet

Giro 2008 Fuse Bluetooth Audio Helmet

Rating for this product: 2 November 7, 2008

I got this helmet for Christmas last year after deciding that it was the best of what Giro had to offer. The ventilation is a big highlight. It has an adjustable vent and you can put plugs in the front vents if things get bitter cold. The lowlights are that it is a giant helmet and the audio is disappointing. When I wear it, I look like I am about to be shot from a cannon. The audio isn't great. I opted out of the bluetooth functionality immediately. My cell phone rarely works on the mountain and I prefer not to be taking calls anyway. To use it in an only mp3 player mode, I had to buy a cable from Best Buy. Having 3 feet of audio cord running through my jacket wasn't the best setup. I would only recommend this jacket if you absolutely need to use your phone on the mountain. If you are just looking for tunes, take a look at RED or Bern. They make a lower profile brain buckets with easy speaker ear pieces.

Great Boot Bag

Mountainsmith Boot Cube Storage Bag - 3112cu in

Mountainsmith Boot Cube Storage Bag - 3112cu in

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

This is a great boot bag. It has a lot of well thought out features. Drains in the bottom, a vent at the top, the pocket holds all my gloves and hats and there is a smaller pocket inside for keys and watches. The bag is big enough for my size 12 ski boots, a helmet, two pairs of gloves and a hat. I would recommend this bag to anyone.

Bern Muse Hard Hat Audio Helmet - Women's

November 4, 2008

Anything is possible. Women and men tend to have different shaped heads, so different helmets are sized to fit that, but if you want it, go for it.-----------The colors are really the only thing different with these. The sizing is the same for Men's and Women's Bern helmets. If they have your size, go for it. Any doubts, check out Bern's website. www.bernunlimited.com

Great spring glove

Pow Gloves Shocker Gloves - Men's

Pow Gloves Shocker Gloves - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2008

I picked up a pair of these last season for some spring skiing. They worked great. Surprisingly stretchy. I usually wear XL gloves and went with a large. No issues on the fit. The palms are durable and have a silicone grip on it that makes them grippy. The best part about the gloves is that you are guaranteed to get a reaction on the lift. Usually laughs.

Old reliable

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 4 October 31, 2008

I have had my whisperlite for almost ten years now and it's still going strong. It burns super hot and simmers fairly well. My favorite feature is how easily you can maintain it in the field. The 'Shaker Jet' will usually clear out any gunk that is messing with the stove, but in case that doesn't work the whole thing can be stripped down, cleaned, re-assembled and lit in 15 minutes. I have had good success with this stove in the winter as well. Never had issues with the fuel line clogging.

A winner

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 October 31, 2008

Call me old school, but I prefer closed cell foam mats. I use the z-rest primarily for summer camping, but have been on some trips when the temperature has dropped and had no issues. The best part of this pad is that if packs really small for a closed cell mat. Much smaller than my ridge rest. The egg carton shape is comfy. A nice little trick with this pad if you are used to sleeping with multiple pillows at home you can neatly fold a couple of the sections underneath your head and it props you up a bit.

A tough classic

MSR Alpine Classic Cookware Set

MSR Alpine Classic Cookware Set

Rating for this product: 5 October 31, 2008

It doesn't get any more basic than this cookset. It will stand up to years of abuse. Tough enough to take dings but still lightweight.

A Solid Pair

Outdoor Research Arete Glove - Men's

Outdoor Research Arete Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 27, 2008

I have been a fan of OR handwear for a long time. I have used these on extended trips and they are a solid 2 piece golve. They have some features not mentioned - idiot cords to prevent dropping and the cuff has one handed cinch.

If you are doing inbounds skiing in real cold weather, I would look for something a little warmer. But for warmer days or touring, these are an excellent choice.

Built to Last

Outdoor Research Cornice Mitten

Outdoor Research Cornice Mitten

Rating for this product: 4 October 27, 2008

I have had these mitts for years and they will probably serve me for many more. They are so burly and will stand up to any kind of abuse. I use them with the PL 400 liners and they are extremely warm.

I echo the others reviews about the dexterity. It's a little difficult to grab smaller things, but I guess thats the price you pay for really warm mitts.

Classic piece of gear

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Deluxe Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Deluxe Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2008

Big fan of this pad. The deluxe is definitely worth the upgrade over the regular. The added thickness was much appreciated during some winter camping trips. The downside is that it doesn't pack small. It will always be a big roll strapped to the outside of your pack. This pad can't fail so I guess I don't worry too much on the trail about it getting poked with sticks and branches.

Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV Jacket - Men's

October 26, 2008

There is not much actually, the hood is one, and the cut is a bit different. The sv stands for severe. AR for all around. I have the SV in the fission and honestly I wish I had the AR. Unless you need this as a shell that you will be only using for extreme weather, and mountaineering trips then consider the AR.Christian:Can you please explain what makes the AR better than the SV if you do not use it for only extreme wheather? Other than the price of course...Is the AR more comfortable or what is it?Thanks. The SV employs burlier material throughout the jacket. The AR uses a combo of lighter material on the body and heavier stuff on the shoulders/arms/seat.

Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV Jacket - Men's

October 26, 2008

Definitely has pit zips. As I mentioned in my review, hood could be bigger. The hood was too small for my Giro helmet, but worked ok with my lower profile Bern. In both cases, I couldn't just put it up. I had to unzip the front zip, put the hood up, then rezip.

Great all around Jacket

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 26, 2008

I bought this jacket to use as my all-around outdoor jacket. Thus far is has been excellent in that capacity. It's comfortable with a pack on and it moves well when I use it for skiing.

I will agree with others that it isn't the best in nasty weather. It has to be paired with a warm midlayer when its cold and if it's pouring I would suggest a full gore-tex shell. Barring those kind of suggestions, I highly recommend this jacket.

MSR DragonFly Stove

October 21, 2008

The dragonfly body folded up is about as big as say the bottom 3-4 inches of a nalgene, but the metal tube that serves as the attachment point for the fuel hose and regulator sort of sticks out about 2-3 more inches at a funny (twistable) angle which adds a more difficult to pack element. It does swivel within about a 135 degree arc so with some creative packing you might be able to make it work. In general I'd say a medium and up pot would fit it fairly well. Also, MSR's Alpine cookset is designed so that all of their stoves can nest neatly inside. It may be work a look if you are concerned about nesting.

Rough and Tumble Pants

Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant - Men's

Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 25, 2008

Love these pants. They can take a beating. I'm never worried about shredding a pocket or ripping a hole in them. They wear like iron. The tradeoff is that they need a little breaking in. A brand new pair are stiff. Once they are dialed you won't wear another pair of pants.

Burly Jacket

Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

This was my go to jacket in everything but the coldest conditions. I loved it. The jacket is super tough. It has a nice streamlined look and pockets in the right places. My only beef with the jacket is that the hood is a pinch small when wearing a helmet. When conditions got brutal I would try to pull the hood up over my Giro helmet and it wouldn't fit. I works fine with my Bern helmet though.

Great Ski Jacket

Cloudveil Down Patrol Jacket - Men's

Cloudveil Down Patrol Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

I used this for skiing and around town when it was super cold. I love it. I'm not a fan of the marshmallow man down coat. This one looks great and was functional too. It has a nice hood and fleece lined pockets. The powder skirt was great for skiing too.

Great Pack

Mountainsmith Off-Piste 20 Daypack - 1190cu in

Mountainsmith Off-Piste 20 Daypack - 1190cu in

Rating for this product: 4 January 15, 2007

I got this pack last year, and it has worked great. The features are super smart. The inside has some a nice goggle pocket and two mesh pockets to keep some smaller stuff organized. There are also tons of ways to strap skis or a board onto the pack. The only thing that could be improved is the pocket for the hydration system. It's a little tricky to get the reservoir in the pocket, but once its in there, there are no problems and because its next to your back, there is no worries of it freezing.

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Women's

I bought this for my girlfriend for Christmas. She loves it and it fits great. She is particularly fond of the fleece lined pockets. I was impressed when it arrived. I might have to get one for myself.
