Great fleece

Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2011

The R2 does its job of keeping you warm, and it does it well. It's very lightweight and warm, compresses fairly well, and is nice and breathable. It's a fantastic layering piece for any cool to cold weather activity, and is great by its self around the campfire or simply walking around the neighborhood.

I'm 5'11", 150#, and the small has an "athletic" fit. Slim enough to stay close to my body, but roomy enough for a hefty base layer underneath, if need be.

Incredible piece

Patagonia Houdini Full-Zip Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Houdini Full-Zip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2011

The Houdini is incredible. It's a great jacket to have on hand for all of those times (from climbing, to hiking, to skinning, to cycling, to...) where you don't need a full on shell, but you need something. It provides great wind protection with little added weight, and takes up very little space. Packing it into its own pocket makes it small enough to fit comfortably into a standard pocket on a cycling jersey, or practically disappear in your pack. It is also surprisingly durable. I had a little run in with a car (literally), on my bike commute home one day, landing me, in my houdini, on the asphalt. After collecting myself, I was pleasantly surprised to find no rips or holes in the jacket, only some black marks.

I'm 5'11, 150# and the small fits perfectly.

EDIT: Backcountry's info says there are two pockets. This is incorrect, there is only one.

Easy and secure

RockyMounts TieRod Bike Mount

RockyMounts TieRod Bike Mount

Rating for this product: 5 August 24, 2011

The TieRod fits snugly on my '08 Outback crossbars. It was quick and easy to instal thanks to the great instructions and simple design. This is the first roof rack I've owned, and I wasn't sure how secure the bike would be. All doubts were erased after driving across the country and up the East coast with my ride safely attached the entire trip. The low profile is great, and there is little to no noise, even at interstate speeds. Last, but not least, the colors are pretty swell.

They do what they need to do.

Sugoi Jack Tight - Men's

Sugoi Jack Tight - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2011

These are pretty basic, but they get the job done. Once you start to move, they keep the warmth in very nicely. The mesh panels behind the knees don't get bunched up, and and drop heat when it starts getting warmer. They also fit well under my cycling bibs. I'm 5'11" 160# and the mediums fit perfectly.

Quality jacket, strange fit

Norrøna Svalbard Flex1 Softshell Jacket - Men's

Norrøna Svalbard Flex1 Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 8, 2010

This is a very well built jacket, and I think it would have been perfect for what I was looking for, but it fit rather strangely on me. I'd have to agree with another review in saying that I've never had a jacket fit like this before. The arm holes seemed to be too high on the torso of the jacket, causing it to ride up on my arm pits. I'm 5'11" and about 160# and ordered a medium. Aside from the arm issue, the jacket fit great, including across the chest.

Other than the strange fit, it seems like a bomber jacket. Build quality is good, and the pit zips are easier to use one handed than any I've ever had. It looks perfect for touring or spring skiing, and has enough room to throw a light fleece or possibly a small down vest under for a bit of extra warmth. It packs down pretty small and would be great for spring and fall hiking and cool summer nights.

Cool shoe - runs small

Tretorn Krona Linen Shoe - Men's

Tretorn Krona Linen Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2010

Nice, comfortable, and good looking. What more could you ask for? They do, however, seem to run a little small, so consider getting a half size larger.

Awesome glove

Hestra Vertical Cut Freeride Glove DO NOT USE

Hestra Vertical Cut Freeride Glove DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2010

These gloves kill it. The quality is next to none, and they are warm down to the coldest of cold days where I'd prefer mitts instead. The dexterity and durability are fantastic. I've had many a run in with rocks and trees and they've held up to it all. With Hestra's awesome size range, you're sure to find a pair that fits. They will pack out a bit, so buy slightly snug (not constricting, just snug). Make sure to put the leather balm on (or some other sort of leather weatherproofer). Your gloves will stay nicer longer, and they'll keep your hands dryer. If you put a little love in, they'll give a lot of love back.

Burly

Cloudveil Down Patrol Jacket - Men's

Cloudveil Down Patrol Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 24, 2010

A big, burly jacket for big, burly days.

This thing is well constructed and well thought out. The powder skirt keeps the fluff out and the pit zips help you cool off during the hike to the goods later in the afternoon. The windstopper fabric keeps you toasty while you're sitting on a broken down lift in 45+ mph gusts. There's plenty of sizable pockets for snacks, flasks, and safety necessities.

At 5'11" and 160# the medium leaves enough room for layers (it's got to be single digit or below to need layers), yet doesn't feel too loose.

The one down side is that the hood doesn't fit over a helmet without the aid of your hand holding it in place.

Wouldn't go without 'em

Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad

Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad

Rating for this product: 5 June 20, 2010

Do your knees a favor and put these on, you'll thank yourself later. They provide superb protection from rocks and frozen death cookies while keeping a low profile. I actually forget I have them on sometimes. They also do add a bit of extra warmth, which is nice when you're standing around waiting for first chair on a frigid morning.

The only (minor) downside is that a few times, the straps have undone themselves, though only after a BIG fall, and the pad began sliding down my shin. Kind of annoying to fix, but like I said, it happens very rarely.

Fantastic bag

Western Mountaineering Antelope Super DL: 5 Degree Down

Western Mountaineering Antelope Super DL: 5 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 October 26, 2009

I bought an antelope a few years ago and love it. The quality is second to none and it will keep you warm, maybe too warm. I find myself stripping down and leaving it unzipped almost every time I've been in this bag it's so warm. I'm around 5'11" and got the long (6'6"). It leaves enough room to stuff clothes down in the bottom to keep 'em warm for the morning, and if you're prone to cold feet, it helps that situation.

The one thing I would add to the bag, is a little velcro pouch on the inside for watch/headlamp/etc.

Though the price is steep, WM makes some of the best bags out there that will last you a lifetime.

Nice Bag

Lafuma Warm'n Light 600 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Lafuma Warm'n Light 600 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 August 4, 2008

I took this bag up to around 11,000' in the beginning of August, where the temps unexpectedly dropped to the mid 30's during the night. I threw on an extra layer and was fine for the whole night. As another review said, when you touch sides of the tent there's lots of heat loss. Only sleeping on a 3/4 pad, my feet were at first cold until I threw the lid of my pack under them. The bag is incredibly light weight and packs down really small. For the price, you can't beat it.
