WARM.

Patagonia DAS Parka - Men's

Patagonia DAS Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

This jacket would be extremely warm for its weight if it were down. But as a synthetic? It's supernatural. I just spent a night @ 10,500 ft. in the Wasatch, with howling winds and a low in the teens; and this jacket kept me super-toasty outside the bivy.

It stuffs into about a 10"(tall)x5"(diameter), which means it's made it into my bc ski pack as a safety essential.

The fit is a bit on the large side - I'm 6'/160 lbs and the medium leaves me more than enough room for layers underneath.

I was going to knock it down to 4 stars because the hood seems to get in the way of my hearing when I get active - it rustles pretty loudly. But honestly, the hood is designed for optimal warmth, which is why I bought it in the first place, so how can I penalize?

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2008

The description of this item on this site is 100% accurate (believe it or not, it really does keep the body odor to a minimum). I wore back country several times in a variety of conditions and it performed superbly. Highly recommend.

Good but not great

Black Diamond Hollowpoint Backpack - 1220cu in

Black Diamond Hollowpoint Backpack - 1220cu in

Rating for this product: 4 April 8, 2008

Very well made, good shape, very comfortable on the back. The hydration bladder is good and tight, keeping the bladder in it's proper position. The bag fits more than you'd think, but it doesn't collapse on itself when mostly empty - it does not have compression straps, and does not need them.

I'm not crazy about the design of the "front pocket" - there are no zippers or velcro closures on the sub-pockets within, so things don't really stay "organized." Instead they tend to migrate.

Overall, another fine product by Black Diamond.

Wicked Light, Water Tight, But...

Outdoor Research Zealot Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Zealot Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 25, 2008

This jacket does what a gore-tex jacket is supposed to do - it's waterproof, windproof, and surprisingly breathable considering that there are no pit zips. I also think it fits well, and that "Mojo Blue," OR's flagship color, is a good one. Drawbacks: First - the fabric is very thin. This hit home when I caught it on some scrub oak - a common hazard skiing the Wasatch at 6200 ft. It tore a hole in the sleeve, but the ripstop fabric did it's job, keeping the hole very tiny and easily patched with a tiny bit of ripstop tape. Second - because there is no way to secure the sleeves to overlap a short-wristed glove, the wrists can become exposed. Cold wrists while skiing can become annoying, numbing the hands and contributing to a lower core temperature. I'd recommend using gloves that can be secured over the sleeves on a cold day. I'd say this jacket is ideal for touring/hiking in moderate weather, and as a backup in your backpack all year round. It weighs nothing.

Moonstone Ultralight Cirrus Jacket - Men's

Moonstone Ultralight Cirrus Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 7, 2006

Extremely warm, extremely light, and extremely comfortable. It also packs very small. It's a great layer. My only complaints are that the cuffs are a bit loose at the wrist, and the waist draw-strings are in the front pockets (making them cumbersome to operate) - I would prefer them on the outside of the jacket at the hips. Those criticisms aside, it's a very nice jacket. Throw a Gore-Tex shell on top and you're ready for anything.
