Go for the 2009 Model

The North Face Rolling Thunder Rolling Duffel Bag - 4800-8400 cu in

The North Face Rolling Thunder Rolling Duffel Bag - 4800-8400 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 March 6, 2009

I got the ginormous 8400cu in size in this bag to fit all my motocross gear in one place - and it rocks. Everything fits in super easy, the bag itself is very durable and the wheels are designed well so that it looks and acts more like a duffel than a roller but you just tip it up and roll away without having to lug a big heavy bag over your shoulder.

HOWEVER, I just noticed that I got the 2008 model, not realizing that the 2009 model is in stock: http://www.backcountry.com/store/TNF3883/The-North-Face-Rolling-Thunder-Duffel-8400cu-in.html

The only two gripes I have with this bag look like they are fixed on the 2009. The first is that the zippers are really hard to move and have no zipper pulls to help out, and the second is that the wrap-around straps that form the handle are weirdly attached to the very bottom of the bag, so they are awkward to grab. Both of those problems look like they are fixed on the 2009 version.

Bottom line: it's a sick bag when you need something huge that's durable and super easy to haul around.

Love that Arc'teryx offers different length options in their ski pants

Arc'teryx Beta AR Pant - Men's

Arc'teryx Beta AR Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 6, 2009

I don't know of any other brand that offers length options in their sizing (short/reg/tall). I thought it was impossible to find any high-quality pants for a guy with a 29" inseam without having the length altered (which is fairly expensive to do because they have to go around the ankle gators and then re-attach them). The short length in the Beta AR fit him perfectly, no alteration required.

Lolë Mao Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 6, 2009

This is a nice versatile top, easy-to-wash cotton that is stretchy and comfortable. It works as a casual piece but you can also dress it up and go out for the night. The sizing was right on for me, I got a medium and it fits perfectly.

Not as expected

Nite Ize SpotLit LED DO NOT USE

Nite Ize SpotLit LED DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 2 March 6, 2009

The description says that this light can be used on a wandering puppy (I happen to have one of those) but she quickly figured out that if she shook her head at all the light turns off. Also, the picture doesn't accurately show that this light has a goat logo printed on it. But for the great price, it's a handy keychain light or just handy to have around in your car or camelbak.

Atomic Poles - Simple & Tough

Atomic Sport Touring Ski Pole

Atomic Sport Touring Ski Pole

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I got these poles in a 140cm to go with a new touring setup (I'm about 5'7"). The price was hard to beat, and the poles are great, simple, comfortable, lightweight, I think they'll last forever. The graphics of the atomic logo are subdued, a gray on gray that has a 70s retro look.

Alpina Woody's pass the test

Alpina Woody Ski

Alpina Woody Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

This is a great ski for just tromping around in, they're a little bit wider than a typical cross country ski so you can cruise off trail and have a little more stability and float if the snow is deep, and you can go with a shorter total length and get the same surface area. Truth be told, I use them to walk my dog around after a storm. They have full metal edges so they feel pretty solid whether going up or down.

Needed some retail therapy - it worked.

The North Face Softwool 1/4 Zip Long Underwear Top - Women's

The North Face Softwool 1/4 Zip Long Underwear Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I usually wouldn't look for a base layer in this spendy price range but I need a little retail therapy one day and came across this softwool top from The North Face. I got a $40 Patagonia base layer at the same time, and I gotta tell you - this one was worth twice the price. It has a super flattering cut with curvy, slimming seams. The wool is not itchy and adds a good amount of warmth; I find I wear it by itself as a regular shirt as often as a base layer.

The surf blue is true to color shown on the site and is super cute. It also has long sleeves with thumb loops which I happen to love.

For sizing: if anything, it fits a little large as do most things from The North Face. I'm usually a medium and sometimes a large in tops, especially long sleeved tops because I have long arms. I got a medium in this top and it fits me perfectly. It's long enough in the arms that the thumb holes are usable, and it's long enough in the back to tuck in or just leave hanging.

Get it, you'll love it. Or get it for someone as a gift and they'll love you.

Happy Feet with these Alpina Backcountry Boots

Alpina BC 1550 Cross Country Backcountry Boot - Womens

Alpina BC 1550 Cross Country Backcountry Boot - Womens

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

These boots go well with the Alpina Rotefella NNN BC Auto Binding - Item #ALP0206.

I was debating between these and the Alpina BC 200L Touring Ski Boot and went with these because I tend to have cold feet and the extra support can't hurt when you're out trailblazing. I took them out tonight and I was very happy with their performance. They were easy to get on/off and my feet stayed plenty warm. I felt that they gave me plenty of support and I was trail breaking in about 8-9" inches of fresh (but heavy) snow.

Great boots, they should last me a long time.

Sizing was spot on - I got the 38s which is exactly right for my foot.

Crucial part of the whole Alpina setup

Rottefella Rotefella NNN BC BC3 Auto Binding

Rottefella Rotefella NNN BC BC3 Auto Binding

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I got these bindings with the Alpina BC 1550 Cross Country Backcountry Boot and the Alpina Woody Ski #ALP0221. With a little study these would be easy enough to mount by yourself, but I had a local shop do it for $30. The bindings are just what you need: get in them, get out of them, do both when you want. They're a great price, I'd recommend them to anyone.

I end up wearing these more than I thought

Backcountry.com Liner Glove - Women's

Backcountry.com Liner Glove - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I got these gloves to go on some cross country ski romps, but turns out they are my go-to gloves for walking the dog and in the car. The goat camo on the palm side offer tons of stickiness for when the dog charges after that lucrative to-go container that tipped out of the neighbor's garbage can, but also just enough warmth that I wear them in fairly cold conditions, 10 - 20 degrees if I'm moving. All in all, a great pair of gloves to add to your quiver.

Very silky feel

Patagonia Capilene 1 T-Neck Top - Women's

Patagonia Capilene 1 T-Neck Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2009

I'm a similar size to reviewer khilbertova2392445 and I got a medium and it fits just right. It's very silky and makes a great base layer.

Unlike some of the higher-end base layers that are now making their way in to the "apres-ski" line-up, this is one that works as it was intended - it's a great base layer and the turtleneck can fold up over your chin on those cold high traverses with gnarly winds.

Great value - great material and good price.

Stretchy Comfort

Patagonia Morning Glory Jacket - Women's

Patagonia Morning Glory Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 7, 2007

The Morning Glory Hoody Jacket stretches with you as you move, and the material has a slightly slick surface (that I love because my dog's fur doesn't stick to it.) The purple color is AWESOME, it's a very dark purple that is pretty accurately reflected in the product photo.
It has fairly accurate sizing, maybe slightly slim-cut if anything. If you need more room than average in the chest area, go a size up.

Arbor Push Snowboard - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2006

The Arbor Push is one of my all-time favorite snowboards. It's light and snappy while also being stable and predictable. It's fun to ride anywhere on the mountain, from tight chutes to the terrain park. I live in Utah where we can go from hard-pack to 3' of fresh in a day, and the Arbor Push is my one board that I can ride in any condition and have a blast. The bamboo topsheet is also beautiful.

The Arbor Stance has a really fun, snappy ride. It's most at home in the terrain park, but is fun anywhere on the mountain. The only time I've had problems with it is on big powder days - the nose is a little flat for flotation in deep snow.

The North Face Flash Down Jacket - Women's

The North Face Flash Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2006

The North Face Flash jacket is as warm as puffy down jackets, without all the bulk. It has a trim fit and is really lightweight so it works well as an insulation layer as well as by itself. The fabric is shimmery, giving it a unique look that's a little fancier than your average down jacket.

Awesome Fit

DC Judge Snowboard Boot - Women's

DC Judge Snowboard Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2006

I have found the perfect snowboard boot. I didn't think it existed, but the DC Judge boots have proved me wrong. These boots have a lot of bells and whistles with a single pull inner lace up, BOA outer lacing system and an air pump bladder. But somehow this boot is designed so perfectly that it is lightweight, not bulky so it fits well in bindings (I use size small bindings with a size 7), and has a great medium-stiff flex. I rarely have boots that work well for me right out of the box - I'm usually cutting away at foot beds to get everything to fit just right. But these fit well and the air pump fills in right around the ankle bone to keep your foot completely locked in place.
