MSR Windscreen and Heat Reflector

February 20, 2009

In addition, it is not tall enough to make a real difference with the pocket rocket. To increase efficiency with the PR, you might want to look into a MSR "XPD" heat exchanger. Very light, and very effective.

MSR DragonFly Stove

MSR DragonFly Stove

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2009

Great stove. Got it for my wife. She really likes it...When I let her use it. Have used it in sun, rain, and even ice fishing. Have used it for making everything from ramen noodles to hollandaise sauce. Never a scorch. Great fuel efficiency too. Only problem being it can be a little hard to light the priming fuel. Once that's done though, primes easily and well. It often spends time on the sideboard of my grill simmering secret sauce.

Wayyyyy necessary

MSR Trillium Stove Base

MSR Trillium Stove Base

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2009

I do a lot of hiking where the ground is not particularly stable, this device has proven invaluable through three MSR stoves (Whisperlite, Whisperlite International, and Dragonfly). Without it, several of my meals would have undoubtedly become part of Mt Mansfield, the ice on Princeto Locks, or that really cool quarry outside of North Andover. Rock, gravel, snow and particularly sandy soil make it an absolute necessity. I wouldn't buy an MSR stove without picking one up to go with it. Some graphite or lithium grease in the inner ring keeps it from seizing.

MSR Alpine Folding Utensils - Set

MSR Alpine Folding Utensils - Set

Rating for this product: 5 December 30, 2008

Other than the spatula not having a bend in the neck, I have absolutely no complaints about these. I actually keep the strainer in my kitchen and use it regularly. 5+ years of use and no problems yet.

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 5 May 21, 2008

I've been using mine for years without complaint. Simmers well once you use up some fuel, just keep the pressure low. The lid from a coffee or tuna can helps a lot. From the Long Trail, to the Nicolet National Forest, to that really cool quarry outside North Andover, this stove has never let me down. I don't think it ever will.

Ahhhh...hydration

MSR MiniWorks Ex Ceramic Water Filter

MSR MiniWorks Ex Ceramic Water Filter

Rating for this product: 5 August 10, 2006

Okay, when they say that a campground has water on site, they should mention that it has so much iron in it that you could pick up your Nalgene full of it with a magnet. This filter worked great. The water was already (presumably)"safe" but what good is it if you can't drink it. I can drink anything, but two 12 year old boys? I don't think so. 4 of us having hiked in with 11 liters of water(most of it gone in the first day)this filter got put though it's paces. 3 days of hiking and camping, and it never gave us a problem. No clogging, no bad taste, and well worth the little extra weight. Having done the iodine thing in the past, this will forever be the way I do it now. Well worth the cost.

Mmmm...Sleep

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 August 10, 2006

Light, easy, durable, compact, and above and beyond all else: comfy. 3 days 2 nights in Nicolet National Forest, slept like a rock. Rolled it up inside my sleeping bag and lost no space in my pack. Lousy ground to sleep on and I felt nothing but rested in the morning. The weight is negligable, and the price well worth it. Another guy on the trip had a "Trail lite" Thermarest, and yet annother had a "Swiss Gear" Both offered to trade on more than one occasion. Nope, don't think so guys.

Comfy, to say the least

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 August 9, 2006

Great pad. Have gone through several pads through the years, closed cell, open cell, straight air, and my first Thermarest that I got back in 97 (lasted until it was stolen) This one is definitely the best. I've got a bum shoulder that causes problems sleeping at home, let alone when hiking. 3days/2nights in Nicolet national forest, I slept like a log. Laid down, curled up, and crashed. Only woke up because a chipmunk was yelling at me that he wanted my macadamia nuts. The fact that I can't say any more about it just shows that I slept that well. If there were any problems, oh well, I was asleep.

bulky, but handy

MSR Heat Exchanger

MSR Heat Exchanger

Rating for this product: 3 June 20, 2006

Great device, works wonderfully. It saves me an immense amount of fuel...when making tea. Melting snow, boiling water for sanitizing, making tea or ramen noodles: it's great. The majority of other things, it's just not worth the weight/space. Mainly the space, as it takes up the room in my set that I use for EVERYTHING else. If I had some kind of semi-hard sided case to put it in to keep it from bending when crammed in with everything else, I'd probably carry it on every trip. But as it stands, I mainly reserve it for ice fishing trips and car camping. Definitely worth the money, but something of a pain in the butt.

MSR Fuel Bottles

MSR Fuel Bottles

Rating for this product: 5 June 20, 2006

I have kicked the crud out of mine, there's just no killing them. A water bottle sleeve (neoprene type) or a couple quick turns of duct tape help keep it from slipping around on rocks and ice, which solves my only complaint. A micro-bungie connecting it to my Trillium helps a lot too.

Unmatched for its purpose

MSR Heat Exchanger

MSR Heat Exchanger

Rating for this product: 3 June 20, 2006

Great piece, and well worth the price(got mine with the Alpine cookset combo). The weight is negligible, and it really does what it says it does. That being said, my only complaint is: Where the heck do I pack it??? If I bring it along, I lose the storage space that I would usually use in the cookset for my stove or kitchen cupboard. The only thing MSR could do to make it better, is to include a hard-case for it so I can put it somewhere else without worrying about mangling it.

MSR Alpine Classic Cookware Set

MSR Alpine Classic Cookware Set

Rating for this product: 4 May 9, 2006

I've kicked the crud out of mine (I got the XPD version worth the extra few bucks) and it keeps coming back for more. It took a little longer to black up than I like, but once it did, very nice. Only complaint: I wish the bottoms were a little thicker, it would even out the hot spots a little. A coffee can lid works for now (and fits inside).

MSR Hubba Hubba 2-Person 3-Season

MSR Hubba Hubba 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2006

Light, simple, versatile, roomy. Okay now that that's out of the way, awesome rig. I have used numerous tents through the years (Dad was a scoutmaster, grew up in New England, nuff said) and this is the best by far. Sure, it costs more than my first car did, but I've gotten more use out of the tent than I ever did with the car. It’s more comfortable to sleep in too. Whether I'm using it to hike around Devil's Lake, or just as a second bedroom for my popup camper, it's never let me down. It looks really cool too.

MSR WhisperLite International Stove DO NOT USE

MSR WhisperLite International Stove DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2006

Great stove! Never had a problem with it. I just have to remember to be patient when priming. Simmering is easy once you use up a little fuel, and a coffee can lid helps a lot as well. I've found that using alcohol gel as a primer instead of fuel works faster and burns cleaner with almost no soot buildup. Can't say enough about it!

MSR Alpine Kitchen Cupboard

MSR Alpine Kitchen Cupboard

Rating for this product: 4 January 17, 2006

Great little gadget. Only problems: when I stow it in my alpine cook set, I have nowhere to put my XPD; and deciding what to keep in the little bottles. Chili powder, garlic, basil, and hmmm, I dunno. I really like the fact that I can fit matches and my pan handler in it. It's also a great place to keep my tool spoon and the kerosene jet for my Whisperlite Internationale. Very handy thingie. Works well to beat eggs in too.
