Great Rope

Edelweiss Onsight Arc Climbing Rope - 9.9mm

Edelweiss Onsight Arc Climbing Rope - 9.9mm

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2007

This is a great rope. The two-tone pattern -- indicating the two halves of the rope -- makes it easy to find the midpoint.

Compact, Lightweight, Affordable First Aid Kit

Adventure Medical Ultralight & Watertight .9 First Aid Kit

Adventure Medical Ultralight & Watertight .9 First Aid Kit

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2007

This is an extremely useful and well designed first aid kit. It's packed in two separate water proof ziplock type durable bags. I had never carried much of a first aid kit in the past, but this one has been useful on a number of occasions already. Definitely worth the cost, space, and weight.

Great Bib. Excellent Pockets.

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Bib - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Bib - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 26, 2006

This bib is comfortable and fit me extremely well. The two chest pockets are large, well placed, and easy to access. My only complaint is that the lack of a 'fly' makes it a little clumsy to answer nature's call. The fly zipper comes all the way up to your chest so you have to reach under your shell and other jacket layers to find the zipper.

Perfomance AT Boot

Garmont Adrenalin Alpine Touring Ski Boot - Men's

Garmont Adrenalin Alpine Touring Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 24, 2006

I had gotten into backcountry touring by using my downhill boots in a Fritschi Freeride binding, so I was used to having a stiff performance boot for the descents. After trying on many different AT boots, I found the Garmont Adrenalin to be the stiffest. After about a dozen backcountry skiing tours I've been extremely happy with its performance. I did have my local ski shop add a 'Booster' power strap to replace the stock power strap, and this did improve the performance of the boot. The walk mode functions comfortably and pretty naturally which is extremely helpful for long approaches or exits, and the Vibram sole is a lifesaver when crossing streams or down climbing over rock or ice. All in all, it’s an outstanding product. Also, I did take the boot to a local bootfitting ski shop to have the liner heated and molded and, of course, put my custom insoles into the boot.

Short

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 24, 2006

This jacket was too short on me. I'm a tall guy (6'1”) and the jacket didn't come down adequately to my waist. I'm still looking for a down jacket that's highly portable for backcountry skiing that fits me well. Unless they are a 'parka', they seem to be cut a little short.

These gloves are extremely warm and comfortable. The leather palm is not as grippy as some, however.

Great Versatile Pole

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Rating for this product: 5 January 24, 2006

Excellent pole to use along with a whippet pole. The weight matches the (unarmed) whippet pole well and makes for a nice symmetric swing weight when skiing.

My only complaint is that the angled points on the '3/4 baskets' get caught easily and frequently on underbrush if you find yourself bushwhacking a bit on the approaches or exits.

Life-Link Backcountry Series Carbon Speed Light Probe 246 cm

Life-Link Backcountry Series Carbon Speed Light Probe 246 cm

Rating for this product: 5 January 24, 2006

Extremely light probe that's easy to deploy quickly. I replaced an old, heavy Ascension probe from about 10 years ago with this probe, and I'm delighted by the light weight of this new carbon fiber probe.

Powder Weapon

Atomic Janak Telemark Ski

Atomic Janak Telemark Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 13, 2006

The Janak performs as well in powder and crud as the (extremely heavy) Dynastar Pro Rider but weighs much less and is therefore much more appropriate for touring. It's also a stiff ski that holds very well on frozen or boilerplate conditions. All in all, it's an ideal backcountry ski for locations with lots of snow, like the Wasatch.
