The Best Light So Far

Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 March 1, 2007

This is the best light I have tried so far. It is hard to turn on in your pack or pocket due to the membrane recess button. It has a combination of seven setting, 3 bright and 3 LED, 1 blinking led. The straps are adjustable over the top and around the head. The pig tail power cord works well and the light mount has an up and down adjustment. I wear glasses and there is no behind the glasses glare. It is an older model and deals can be had right now, don't delay. I am a light collector of sorts and this is my best hiking and utility light for head mount application.

Worst Experience With a Tent

The North Face Trailhead 6 Tent 6-Person 3-Season

The North Face Trailhead 6 Tent 6-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 1 January 4, 2007

This tent is OK if you camp in ideal conditions. We used it the first time in Joshua Tree in the winter.

The tent took up a huge amount of space in our camping spot. It went up fairly fast until the fly went on. The staking, velcro attachments, and tent pegs took forever to align and get tight enough to be secure. Strong winds came up during the night and with the high profile the tent, caught too much wind and started to thrash around and make thunderous noise with the fly beating against the sides. Wind went underneath the stake points and ripped the floor, creating a kite effect. This action pulled some of the stakes out of the ground and the aluminum poles started to bend because of the shear size of the tent blowing in the wind. At 2AM on a very cold evening, the kids and wife shuttled out to the van and I spent the rest of the night taking down the tent in the wind.

There were many other tents in the camp ground that were not having problems with the wind like we had. Obviously the wind was blowing them around a bit, but they were not self destructing like the Trailhead 6. It's just too big for windy conditions.

I looked closer at the tent floor when we got home and discovered that a seam exists on the bottom where the walls come to meet the floor. Sewing the material at this point created a perforation in the material and a weak point for ripping.

This shop has been good so far and they are exchanging the tent for a smaller and lower Kelty Mantra under warranty terms.

Northshore Jacket

Marmot Northshore Jacket - Men's

Marmot Northshore Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 31, 2006

Great fit (not too long or short) great materials (best zippers, fleece, and outer shell). The way the fleece liner lies inside the jacket is top notch and enhances the look and feel. Sewn in Vietnam, on only very close inspection not all seams are straight. It’s a little heavy for packing but perfect for around town whether business or casual. It would also make an excellent slope jacket if I still did that sort thing. The biggest complaint I have is the fleece material itself. If you have dry hands (and who doesn't in the winter) or are wearing wool, it is difficult to thread your hand and arms through the fleece arm of the jacket when the fleece is in place. It really should have a ripstop nylon arm lining in the fleece.
