Merrell Solo Origins Hiking Shoes - Men's

Merrell Solo Origins Hiking Shoes - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2012

Nice old school look, comfortable for everyday. Fit a little wide and a little stiff. I prefer something more snug for hiking so these are more around-town shoes for me. So far really durable - hardly any sign of wear on the outsoles or uppers.

Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2012

I use mine primarily for running (road) and can't complain. Bright enough for most tasks that are fairly close at hand. Light enough to run with - doesn't bounce around at all. Adjustable angle makes it easy to point where you need it.

DAKINE X-Mat Stomp Pad

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2012

I had one of these on a board for several seasons - never any issues. Spikes are pointy for good traction and just big enough to get most of the show off. Goes on easy, not sure if it'd come off the same way. Pickup up another one for my new board.

Perfect snowsuits

Columbia Buga Snow Suit Set - Toddler Girls'

Columbia Buga Snow Suit Set - Toddler Girls'

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2011

These are absolutely perfect for winter play. Sledding, skiing, snowball fights, building snowmen - you name it. Love that the jacket can be used separately. The pants are slightly long but the velcro shoulder straps make it easy to adjust. If your kid is taller they have plenty of room - and the cuff unrolls for an extra inch. Great hood and wrist cuffs for total coverage. Always warm, always dry.

Columbia Cozy Cabin Thermal Long Underwear Top - Toddler Girls'

Columbia Cozy Cabin Thermal Long Underwear Top - Toddler Girls'

Rating for this product: 4 November 24, 2011

These are great play shirts - warm enough to wear alone under an insulated jacket, and light enough to wear around the house. They aren't quite as snug as you'd expect an adult piece to be - but they get the job done with no issues.

Warm, cozy, easy on and off!

Columbia Powderbug Plus Boot - Little Girls'

Columbia Powderbug Plus Boot - Little Girls'

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2011

We've been in Columbia boots for a few winters now and they continue to be great. Super warm felt liners (rated to -25F) make these a no brainer for stomping around, sledding, whatever you have in mind. They slip on easy and stay on tight - even if the elastic doesn't seem to make a difference. They are a little stiff out of the box but they seem to loosen up as they are worn.

5 stars for one simple reason - no complaints from the kid, ever!

Super cool bike shorts

The North Face Synkros Hayes Short - Men's

The North Face Synkros Hayes Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 14, 2011

These shorts have become the go-to in the closet. Nice light weight, great slimmer fit. The 11" inseam is longer than I usually wear (and I'm short) but they are very comfortable just at the bottom of my kneecap and look great. Good pockets with nice stripe/reflective detail when the back pockets are buttoned up. Yeah, they button opened or closed which is a cool detail. Have worn them hiking and they seem to be pretty durable too. The button fly is a bit of a pain because of the way the buttons are attached, but it is a small price to pay. Just to be clear, they are bike LIFESTYLE shorts, for commuting or just around town, they are not padded in any way.

Nice light trainer

New Balance 890 Running Shoe - Men's

New Balance 890 Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 10, 2011

These shoes are very light and have a nice low profile. The last is fairly straight and relatively narrow in the toe box. I've been an asics guy for many many years, but these felt good right out of the box. They are great for many types of strides as mine varies from mid-foot to heel depending how tired (or lazy) I am. I do wish there was a little more padding around mile 8-9 but they are great for me up to about 11 miles (as far as I've gone in them so far). A few people have asked about trails and I would stick to the road with these.

Overall - a nice blend of weight, neutral moderate cushioning and they look good to (especially in black). And the laces really are nice!

Perfect Summer Jacket

The North Face Better Than Naked Jacket - Men's

The North Face Better Than Naked Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 10, 2011

I will likely wear this jacket every day for the rest of the summer! The material is so light you barely notice you are wearing it (my medium size is 4oz). Wicks moisture well and has nice venting on the chest and back. The back of the neck is slightly higher than you might expect but makes for great sun coverage. The drop back is perfect for cycling. No hook and loop, no adjustable anything making it very minimalist. I'm 5'5" and thin - both the small and medium fit, but I went with the medium because it will always be over another shirt and I prefer it to be loose for the hotter days.

If I had to nitpick - there is only one pocket on the sleeve, and because the material is so light, almost anything you put in there will bounce and swing while running or riding, it is not a place for your phone...

Great Shovel - Long Handle

Backcountry Access Arsenal Shovel w/240 Probe - Companion Blade

Backcountry Access Arsenal Shovel w/240 Probe - Companion Blade

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2011

Big blade, flat shoulders (for foot placement), solid feel, and a long handle (more on this in a sec). Probe integration is excellent, easy insertion/deployment, no rattles.

As for the handle - nice that it is long for digging (very important), but it is a lot longer than their other handles which isn't great for packing (what you'll do with it most of the time). Too long for me to wear without a pack (but I'm short) and too long for the BCA stash packs! If you are looking to get a full BCA outfit, go with a separate probe and shovel, handle is shorter and probe is thicker (stronger).

Great minimalist shoe without toes

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2011

I've been running in these 2x per week since mid-January and they are great! A nice alternative to five-fingers while still benefiting from the Vibram sole. Nice wide toe box for very natural foot movement and a very snug, form fitting feel. Mid-foot and heel might be a little tight for some but it fits my foot really well (yeah, I have flippers). I wear ultra-ultra light socks (been cold here) and I'm looking forward to going barefoot inside this summer - seams are smooth and well covered to avoid hot spots.

Wear these for a run (or for the day) and when you put regular sneakers on they feel like high heels!

Nice helmet - check the fit!

Giro Seam Helmet

Giro Seam Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 January 26, 2011

5 stars for features and quality, 4 stars for fit, check your melon.

The helmet is very well made, with great features. I haven't had any of the same rattles or cold issues that some people report. Vent slider is totally solid and blocks the wind as you'd expect. Adjustment dial is key for the perfect fit and it delivers - and is easy to adjust with gloves on when necessary. Anti-static liner is nice bonus. Low profile shape fits great with a hood (Beta AR) and the brim accommodates most goggles.

My only complaint is that the shell is a little wide for me and leaves a slight gap over the ears.

Solid kids goggles

Smith Gambler Junior Series Goggles - Youth

Smith Gambler Junior Series Goggles - Youth

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2011

Good middle of the road lenses - not too dark not too light. Lots of adjustability in the strap which has a very grippy inside for use with hoods and helmets. Good seal on even the smallest faces. Works equally well over a hat, hood or helmet (Giro Slingshot). Fog hasn't been an issue and durability seems right up there with adult products. Pretty good price too.

Minimalist and More than Enough

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2011

This is as minimal as they come - light weight, no frills, but totally solid. No liner or bulky pockets. Fit is a little boxy, wide and shortish. Shoulders seem a little spacious at first, but when you raise your arms above your head there is no movement of the cuffs or hemline. Drop hood is awesome - fits great over a helmet (any helmet) and the stand up collar is great. I use it for alpine skiing with no issues - but I've never felt the need for the bulk of a powder skirt. Haven't used it on a really cold windy day yet - only concern is no external flap on the main zipper. Craftsman ship is good - made in Canada.

Great all around glasses

Oakley Fives Squared Sunglasses - Polarized

Oakley Fives Squared Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2011

Never leave the house without them. Good fit for medium sized faces and they wrap really well to eliminate light coming in the sides and top. Low light transmission is great in bright sun, polarization for glare, and lenses don't distort colors. I'm managed to ding my lenses up pretty good but I am hard on them - I'd still say they are pretty tough. Frames have a few scars too. I'd still buy another pair!

Great Everyday Ride

Liberty Helix Ski

Liberty Helix Ski

Rating for this product: 5 December 31, 2010

After 10 days on the 176s I don't have a single complaint. Super light, crazy stable, great pop. Skis pretty short, but not in a bad way. Enough cut and camber to rail them on groomed snow, fat enough to float in the deepest snow (I'm 140 lbs) and it has been deep in the Wasatch this year! Mounted to match the standard mount line (at Liberty's recommendation) and wouldn't change that.

Columbia Hail Tech Jacket - Men's

Columbia Hail Tech Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 28, 2010

Just picked up one of these and I am very pleasantly surprised! Omni-tech fabric is very soft and pliable - not crinkly at all. Very well constructed. Size is a big baggier than other similar jackets (think TNF Venture) but not so big as to need to downsize - nice casual fit. Nice zippers, great fitting hood. No pit zips but the underarms are vented, well protected under deep flaps.

Rating for this product: 4 September 12, 2010

The North Face Single-Track Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 12, 2010

I'm a wide forefoot, narrow heel, high arch, slight pronator and these do the trick for me! Good overall fit, fairly true to size if only a little shorter than other 8.5s. Super light, great feel right out of the box. Seem pretty durable. Nice outsoles for trails and not too knobby for road.

One thing - that new TNF logo? Why oh why...

Solid TNF Active Jacket

The North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket - Men's

The North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 6, 2010

Nicely made jacket - and very durable. Fit is a little more on the casual side than the performance side. Great for layering over a sweater or sweatshirt. Fleece lining is nice and smooth. Maybe a little too warm for jogging, but great for cool weather hiking and casual wear. Haven't gotten it wet, but if it performs like other TNF softshells it will be no problem.

Update 3/25/11 - Been using this as a cold weather cycling jacket and it has been fantastic. With a mid weight layer beneath I've been good down to mid 20s for 10 miles or so.

As for my fit comment - I'm 5'6", 140 lbs wearing a medium, a small might be a a better performance fit.

Pearl Izumi Attack Cushion Low Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 6, 2010

These are about as basic a sock as you can buy. Little cushioning, very thin - which is great inside a cycling shoe. I might prefer something a little more cushy for mtn rides, but these are great eveyday commuting/road socks. Work great with casual shoes too as they are thin and light and your feet stay cool.

LEKI Wanderfreund Antishock Trekking Pole - 1 Pole

September 6, 2010

I just bought a pair of these for my dad who is disabled but does a lot of walking and is doing a little more trail walking (not quite hiking). The grip is very ergonomic and is super stable when used as a cane. The range of extension is great because he can also make it tall enough to use like a trekking pole holding on on the vertical part of the grip. Not sure this would work for everyone - he is 5'5". Using them as a pair is very stable and has allowed him to venture into more uneven terrain.

The rubber tip is nice to have as they can by used inside, sidewalks, etc and then easily switched to the tip for more natural terrain.

I'm not sure about replacing the existing grip...

Petzl Tikka 2 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2010

Use it mainly for running - and for that purpose it is great. Super light, great fit with or without a hat, and very very bright. Full on mode for trails, blinking for streets - either way you can't go wrong. Also used as extra light for cycling, the blinking mode is very easy for cars and traffic to see and unlike a headlamp points where you look (think intersection). Batteries seem to last forever and even a few drops later the light is in great shape, very durable. Nice price too.

The must have for active parents!

Chariot Carriers Inc Cougar 1 Stroller

Chariot Carriers Inc Cougar 1 Stroller

Rating for this product: 5 March 10, 2010

Have a kid - or getting ready to? You need this! The price was hard to swallow for a dedicated jogger, but in hindsight - I'd have spent twice as much. We use the jogging kit and the bike kit. Set up as a jogger it rolls straight and easy, very little resistance and a ton of storage space. Need a better workout? Load up the kid and all the associated stuff: toys, snacks, diapers, drinks and hit the hills. As a bike attachment it goes on/of easy, is very stable and doesn't affect the quality of the ride at all. Easy to maneuver, just watch the edge of the sidewalk!

But more importantly - the kid loves it. She has plenty of space, plenty of pockets for stuff - and a great view (better as a jogger than behind the bike for obvious reasons). A good comfortable seat and great harness keep her safe.

Folds down relatively small, ok, it is pretty big, but if folds easily. Parts are very durable. With a sun shade, a mesh screen and a clear rain cover - you can be out in any weather.

I've been using this jacket for winter running and it is excellent - great wind protection, excellent breathability and light weight.
