Stomping Grounds:
The Wasatch. I travel all over Utah and surrounding states to Mountain Bike, but never have to go anywhere else to Ski. -
Bio:
Moved to Utah 30 years ago and never looked back(to Michigan). I have a few days of skiing in. I worked at Snowbird from 1979 to 2001 and have in 1000's of days, all WITHOUT the benefit of Fat skis. I have been here at Backcountry for 3 years and no longer ski on skinny skis. I still ride the lifts occasionally, but have been an avid Backcountry skier for 25 years. There is simply no better place to backcountry ski south of the 49th parallel.

Alpina Blazer Touring Boot
February 16, 2010
If you look at the sizing chart under US woman, you will see that you should be ABOUT a 39. I have another chart that says 39.5. If you look at all the reviews, you will see a variety comments. So you will have to decide between 39 and 40. Is your foot narrow, wide, do you like thick socks?

Fischer Snowbound Ski
February 16, 2010
The US Snowbound has climbing scales and the E109 does not. Otherwise same shape. For those older Tele skiers, this was the typical shaped ski in the late 80's , early 90's. I had 2 pair of Fischer GTS ( 76-61-68) and skied them for about 6 years, 3 pins on one, Voile classic on the other. They skied great. I currently use the Switchback and think they are great. If you are going to use leather boots, they may be overkill.

Atomic Sierra Positrack Ski
February 16, 2010
Yes, classic track is 68MM wide. So skis wider are geared more for off track skiing and you might as well go wide for flotation. The extra 20 MM or more in the tip does not add much weight and can be offset by getting a shorter ski.

Black Diamond Ascension Custom STS Climbing Skins
April 6, 2009
If you go with the 167-174, the clip will be near the end of the orange tail. With the 173-180, it will be near the end of the skin. That is what I would suggest because it gives you more tail to grab onto to rip off the skins.

Fischer T-Stix Telemark Ski

The Hammerheads would work well with these skis too. But if you are looking for something different, the Black Diamond O2 would be great. The O1 and O2 bindings have incredible performance and snap for aggressive skiers.

Gregory Denali Pro 105 Backpack - 6100-7000cu in
April 3, 2009
I can think of no finer pack to carry 5 gallons of Homebrew. I do not have the exact measurements of the main compartment, but the weight of the keg pushing into the sleeping bag compartment and the adjustable top pocket, it should fit fine. With Gregory's awesome suspension system, you should comfortably get your Brew to your favorite Backcountry destination.

Dynastar Legend Pro Rider Alpine Ski 08/09 Model
March 27, 2009
I am on my 4th season on the 8800 too. It is still my trusty all mountain GS racing ski. I just demoed the Pro rider and really liked it. It does have a considerable softer flex and skied much better in Pow then the 8800. I have a 176 8800 and demoed the 184 Pro rider. I only weight 150 and the 184 may have been more then I need, but I did not have any problem.

Bindings mounted a little back will give you better flotation in powder. Mounted forward of center will make for a quicker turning ski. But they should not be more then about 2 cm either side of center.

Turning radius is not listed on Atomic's website. But they have a lot of sidecut and turn FAST. In 2 years of slicing and dicing through tight backcountry trees, I have not hit one yet.

Atomic RT86 Ski
January 19, 2009
In an alpine turn, all the weight is on the outside ski, whereas in a tele turn it's on both. For that reason, tele skis are flexier for their length. That said, there's no reason you can't mount alpine or AT bindings on them, they just might not ski as aggressively as an alpine ski.So Backcountry magazine( possibly a better source then Skiing) Gave this ski an Editor's Choice award. You ca see them for their review. I am on my second season on the RT86 and love it. I am a lightweight Tele skier and use it in the backcountry only. A possible reason some may have issues with this ski mounted AT, is that it is very light( a good thing) and a bit soft in the tip. So like Angus pointed out, it may not ski aggressively in some chunky conditions. but it excels in Powder.

G3 El Hombre Ski
August 25, 2008
Those are 2 very different skis, FAT and all mountain. I have skied the Baron and it is the gripiest Tele board I have ever skied. It is a great all mountain lift ski and would be a great choice. But if you are looking for a back bowl ski and want something not as wide as the El Hombre, do not forget the Reverend. I would say if you are looking at getting a 170cm, the Baron would be a bit small. The wider Reverend in a 170 would be a nice all around ski for you.

Scarpa T2 Telemark Ski Boot
August 25, 2008
Scarpa boots come with Intuition liners which have the overlap design. No lace up. It seems strange at first, but they are very comfortable. There is no TR-2 boot. You have the T-Race, T1 and T2X. The T2X is a great Backcountry boot. Very light and comfortable to walk in.
