Stoic Breathe 90 Boxer - Mens

Stoic Breathe 90 Boxer - Mens

Rating for this product: 4 June 29, 2011

These are the most comfortable boxers I've ever worn. The material is very soft and isn't prone to clinging where you don't want it. There are also pretty durable. They've been on several trips now and many wash cycles and are still in great shape.

They lost a star in my review because there is no button on the front flap (which would be fine, except the flap runs the full length of the front).

Knee and elbow saver

LEKI Summit Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

LEKI Summit Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 June 24, 2011

When I bought these, I thought the antishock was a cool feature, but overkill. I had to borrow some poles for a recent hike and I say now that the antishock is a must-have. They are totally saving my elbows.
At 120cm extension, these seem a like they won't stop a fall. I know from experience now, that they will. The poles have been thoroughly abused and they still work great. The expander mechanism has lasted and I have no trouble with slippage.

Durable. Light. Convenient.

Osprey Packs Transporter 95 Duffel Bag - 5797cu in

Osprey Packs Transporter 95 Duffel Bag - 5797cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 24, 2011

I bought this to haul my trekking gear around East Africa. This bag is HUGE. It survived the baggage handling at the airport (can't say the same for other luggage I've purchased), survived being hauled up Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya, and still looks in great shape. The back straps are pretty convenient as well.
Its worth noting that this bag is NOT waterproof.

Durable shorts

Stoic Overhang Short - Men's

Stoic Overhang Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 24, 2011

Similar to other reviewers, I found the sizing to be slightly snug, but not enough that I would go up a size. I bought the medium and I usually wear a 32 pant size. The inseam is a good length for this type of short. They hit me about 1 inch above the knee. (in pants, I wear a 31 inseam)

The fabric is awesome. They feel like my OR soft shell pants, but are more stretchy and not as warm. I wore these in high 90s heat and wasn't too warm.

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 9, 2011

This works as it is supposed to. I haven't had durability issues, but don't usually wear it by itself (its not quite compression fit, but definitely snug). I have similar shirts from both Ice Breaker and SmartWool, which I do like better, but they were 50% more expensive and I don't like them 50% better.

The shirt to wear when you'd rather be w/o but don't want to burn

ExOfficio Reef Runner Lite Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

ExOfficio Reef Runner Lite Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 9, 2011

This shirt is very nice. Same with other reveiwers, I found it to run a little larger. I wear a 15.5 - 32/33 dress shirt and the medium here fits big on me. Not so much I'd trade it for a small though.
The material is excellent and super light weight. Its almost see-through, so if you don't like that, this isn't for you. As the title of my review says, this is my go-to shirt for situations where I'd rather not have a shirt on, but don't want to get sun-burned and/or don't want my pack on bare skin.

Best in class

Outdoor Research Sentinel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Outdoor Research Sentinel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 9, 2011

I recently purchased this shirt, along with similar shirts from ex Officio and Mountain Hardware. While I do like all 3 them quite a bit, this one stands out. I bought the medium for this shirt and it fits well (dress shirt size is 15.5- 32/33).
The material is nice and the construction is sturdy. Nice and light weight, but appears durable so far. The Specs say "1 chest zip, 1 chest napolean", however, the one I got only has one pocket total and its hook and loop (velcro). The flap on the other side is just decor. The length of this shirt is perfect for me. Its long enough to tuck in, short enough to be worn un-tucked. The one and only thing where this shirt doesn't beet the others I purchased is in location of the button on the sleeve. On this shirt, its just above my elbow, meaning the sleeve roll is just below. Others I've purchased in this category have buttons higher up the sleeve. This is not a problem for me, but worth noting here. Also worth noting is that unlike the photo in this listing, there is no decal on the cuff (phew!).

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Mens

Rating for this product: 5 June 9, 2011

I love the shirt. Its another solid product by MHW. I wear a 15 1/2 - 32/33 dress shirt and the medium for this is large on me. The sleeves cover my hand down to the knuckles. This is okay, as I typically wear it with the sleeves rolled up.

Great set.

GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Dualist Cookset

GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Dualist Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 June 9, 2011

Although its a "dualist", I took it on a 4 person trip and it worked great. None of us like drinking from a bowl, so instead of using the set as 2 bowls and 2 cups, we used all of the bowls as bowls. I really like the deep 1.8 liter pot compared to other brands that have shorter wider pots. This is because its much easier to pour water out of a narrow deep pot. Agree its a little hard to stir the food if you actually cooking in the pot. Everything cleans up pretty easy and its very convenient to pack.

Nice Rack!

Thule Hull-a-port Kayak Carrier

Thule Hull-a-port Kayak Carrier

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2011

This rack is easy to use and is easy on the hull. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that you can't lock it to your rack system. At $140, I'd hate to come back from the lake and have no way to take the kayak home.
For reference, I had the Ocean Kayak Malibu 2 XL (tandem). While it will fit, its not very secure. I think the width at 34inches is too much for this carrier. My other kayak, at 29inches works fantastic.

Great shoe!

Tubbs Flex Alp Snowshoe - Men's

Tubbs Flex Alp Snowshoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2011

I've worn these twice now in totally different conditions. First time was in powder, second time was on crusty ice. For the powder, these worked pretty good. I did sink a fair bit, but I was wearing a pack and the surface area of these isn't quite enough to support all that weight. I was happy to have the ease of mobility provided by the smaller surface area even with the extra sinking. On the crusty snow, these show were awesome. The teeth on the bottom are amazing. Much better than the standard 5 or 6 points I've seen on other shoes.
On one of my trips, I was wearing these and a friend was wearing some other brand. I was in and out of the shoes in a fraction of the time. I find the bindings here very user-friendly.

Bought this as my first my first climbing harness. I've rented harnesses before and found them to be extremely uncomfortable. After a few uses and many hours, this one still feels comfortable, even during a couple short falls. Stitching all seems to be well done. I have a 32inch waist and the medium fits perfect.

Marmot Sawtooth Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 June 5, 2011

I've had mine (the 2006 model) for 5 years now and have literally traveled the world with it. I've camped on a glacier and been toasty. Most recently, I used this bag for climbing both Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya. I only had to zip the bag up for 1 or 2 nights. Its that warm.
All in all, its a good bag for the price. If you can spend the extra money, there are lighter bags that are just as warm.

I'll never go back to "regular" glasses!

Smith Guides Choice Sunglasses - Polarchromic

Rating for this product: 5 June 5, 2011

I love these glasses. The lenses have amazing clarity. Also, the auto tint feature makes transition from sunny areas to shade very convenient. No more putting glasses on my head and then putting them back on my face over and over again. I never realized how clutch that technology was, but will now never go back. The rubber on the nose piece is a nice touch as it prevents them from sliding on a sweaty face. They are pretty light considering how sturdy they are, but I could definitely feel them after 8+ hours straight.

Great flexible pack

Gregory Baltoro 75 Backpack - 4455-4760cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 5, 2011

I've used this pack several times now and love it. Key features for me:

1) Pivoting hip belt. Unlike most packs where the hip belt is locked in an upsidedown "T" shape, this one allows for mobility. I carried this pack with about 40lbs (including pack weight) on a 4-day hike that included a fair amount of scrambling, including a long 5.2 climb. The additional flexibility allowed by the pivoting hip belt was a life saver.

2) "Sticky" material at the based of the pack. All previous packs I've owned caused my shirts to ride up over time such that I need to pull the shirt down every 15 mins or so to avoid having the pack on bare skin. The material at the base of this pack prevents that. Small detail, big comfort.

3) Fully adjustable. There are so many different ways to load and secure this pack. This is very handy when you need it as a day pack in the middle of a long trip to investigate an offshoot to your main trail.

4) Hip belt is thick and is molded into a curve. I've had issues in the past with packs being a little more flimsy at the hip belt, meaning that to get the load balanced on my hips correctly, I had to cinch the belt up SO tight that it was tough to breathe.

Nice shirt, but not for backpacking

The North Face Pantoll T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Pantoll T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 5, 2011

I like this shirt in that its very light, feels good on skin and keeps you dry. Its perfect for running, hitting the gym or wearing to work as an undershirt in hot weather. However, it is not good for backpacking as the material doesn't hold up to the wear from the straps. Also, took a nap on some sandstone and when I stood up, the fabric of the shirt stuck to the rock and now has pilled up.

All around great rock shoe

Five Ten D'Aescent Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 5, 2011

These shoes feel great on your feet. Super light and breathe well. I've worn them for climbing (up to 5.8, had to change to climbing shoes for the 5.9), light hiking and most recently for playing around the slot canyons in Escalante. They work great. Lots of traction, the stealth rubber is amazing, allowing me to walk down sandstone faces where others in my group were sliding. On top of functioning as promised, these shoes looked pretty darn cool. I have the men's shoe, but saw a climbing guide in Castle Rock SP wearing the woman's version and those looked great to. I've rated these five stars because I love them and they do what they are supposed to do. Only issue is that the mesh on these doesn't hold up to the abuse that the rest of the shoe can take. I got my foot wedged into some cracks and now have some worn-through spots in the mesh. Not great, but the shoe wasn't meant for wedging in a sandstone crack.

Great warm weather active shirt

Icebreaker SuperFine 150 Tech Lite Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Icebreaker SuperFine 150 Tech Lite Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2011

This is my favorite shirt for warm weather activities. The wool is amazing against your skin and the shirts looks great. They fit like a normal t-shirt, so you can wear it by itself in public (even if you aren't ripped). I have the long sleeve shirt as well and wear them pretty much every time I hit the outdoors when its over 50 degrees.
My only gripe is that they don't come in white! (I wear them as undershirts to work also, but can only wear with dark shirts due to the lack of lighter colors)

Great Pants all around!

Mountain Hardwear Mesa Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Mesa Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2011

Bought these pants a month ago and have taken them out several times. First of all, these pants look sharp. Similar to other models, they a button snap, but also a built-in belt for a more fitted feel. I'm usually skeptical of built-in belts as I don't care for the feel of them when I have a backpack on, but this belt isn't noticeable. I did a 10 mile hike in 90+ degree whether in these pants and thought they stayed relatively cool. Obviously not as cool as shorts, but they did protect my legs from sun, bugs and brush. The mobility of these pants is good. They aren't quite as stretchy as others, but still fully functional for hiking and scrambling. They also dry pretty quickly.
The only thing I would improve on these is related to the rear pockets. While the position is great, I think a better design feature would be to put the "scratchy" part of the Velcro on the pant and the softer part of the Velcro on the pocket. This is because the scratchy side is pretty abrasive against your skin, especially if you have sunburn.

windproof and breathable

Outdoor Research Sonic Balaclava

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2011

I was skeptical about how warm this would be when it arrived and I noticed how lightweight it is. I was fully expecting to have to layer it under a fleece beanie. I was pleasantly surprised at how warm this thing is. I wore it climbing both Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya, with nothing over it. The winds were 30+ mph and temperature was sub-zero Fahrenheit. My head stayed nice and warm and I still hear pretty well. The material over the mouth allows for easier breathing then the typical "ski mask" variety, but sucking wind at 19K ft, I still had to pull it down when I needed deep breaths.
All-in-all, this is a terrific piece of cold weather equipment. (The packaging says you can also wear it as a beanie, but I found it to be too tight for that and wouldn't risk stretching it out to make it work. It's best used as a balaclava.)

Patagonia Capilene 4 Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2011

I've worn this shirt on casual days in the snow, layered only with a rain jacket as well layered over a lightweight smartwool shirt and under the Arc'teryx Atom LT, when I needed maximum warmth with maximum maneuverability and moisture management. Stays warm when damp and doesn't smell too bad even after extended use. Fit is slim and long.

Warm, lightweight, great fit

Arc'teryx Atom LT Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2011

This jacket is everything it's advertised to be. Warm, compact, lightweight and water resistant. I wore this nearly every day during my 7-day trek up Mt Kilimanjaro and another 4-day trek up Mt Kenya. It "plays well" with base layers (it slides easy) and also does really well in strong wind. It has an athletic fit which allows it to be easily layered underneath an outer shell and also makes it a pretty cool jacket for wearing around town. The external material also has the added benefit of being easy to wash in the field.
Although I originally thought it was overpriced, I've found it to be worth every dollar. Its pretty much my go-to jacket now as long as it's not pouring rain.

Great lightweight outer layer

Cloudveil Zorro Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2011

I bought this jacket originally just for dealing with the rain in warmer climates, as it has fantastic ventilation through the zippers in the armpit area. In my recent excursion through Africa, I found my other jacket to be too bulky and decided to use this "rain jacket" as the outer layer instead. The temperature was well below 0 deg F with 30+ mph winds. Combined with the lightest weight Smartwool shirt, Patagonia Capilene 4 zip-neck top, Arc'teryx Atom LT Insulated Jacket, I was nice and warm, but still had all the flexibility I needed to climb over rocks and hike comfortably with my trekking poles.
Oh yeah, it also works great for my original intended purpose. I'm always dry and comfortable in this jacket.

X-Socks Expedition Short Trekking Sock

Rating for this product: 3 March 6, 2011

I wore these for about 6 hours straight during drastic swings in temperature. These socks were extremely warm, which impressed me especially because they are pretty lightweight compared to my other socks with similar warmth. However, I got hotspots on both feet (balls of feet and heel). I will still use these when the temperature drops and I feel like wearing my hiking shoes instead of boots, but will stick to the smartwool socks with my boots.

injinji Outdoor Crew Toe Sock- NuWool

injinji Outdoor Crew Toe Sock- NuWool

Rating for this product: 3 March 6, 2011

I bought these socks because I frequently get blisters in between my toes when I go for hikes with extended down-hill sections (amplified when carrying weight). They did accomplish this job, but they are a real pain to get on and off. Additionally, I think my toe length isn't right for these as there was a lot of extra room at the top of my pinky toe. They also seem to be a little more sensitive to the washing machine (washed on delicate cycle and they came out with little balls of wool all over them)
