Mountain Hardwear Jovian Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Jovian Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 20, 2012

Jacket seemed very nice and well constructed. I was pretty excited to try out MHW's new Dry Q Elite technology, but as others have alluded to, the sizing is a bit off. I normally wear a medium in just about everything, but with this jacket it was too tight in the shoulders and upper back. I also tried on the large, but it was way too baggy. The Snowtastic was a similar fit in the medium.

Waterproof, but....

Mountain Hardwear Minus One Glove

Rating for this product: 2 December 25, 2011

I bought these gloves for ice climbing because the ones I normally use died last season. I was looking for gloves that were not too thick, offered good dexterity, were waterproof and had a durable leather palm so that I could also use them to belay without shredding the palms. The Minus One gloves seemed to fit the bill. They were a good fit with nice dexterity and had plenty of leather on the fingers and palm, while offering stretch material on the back of the hands/fingers. I used them for one day of ice climbing in Colorado. This involved setting anchors, climbing and rapping off. The dexterity of the glove was okay, but I wonder if I should have sized them down for a better fit. My hands stayed dry all day, HOWEVER, the leather palms of the glove did soak up water. The moisture never penetrated through the inner membrane, but my hands got cold because of the wet leather palms. I had even taken one glove off while taking some photos and clipped it to my harness and when I put the glove back on it was frozen because of all the moisture soaked into the leather. So yes, my hands stayed dry, however, they got pretty cold because of the leather. My previous gloves also had leather palms, but never soaked up moisture until the very end of their life. These gloves did it on the very first day. Besides this one thing, they would be fine. I'm debating whether sending them back or trying to treat the leather.

Black Diamond Super Chute Rope Bag - 1525cu in

Black Diamond Super Chute Rope Bag - 1525cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2011

Its nice large size fits my 70m rope no problem and the funnel design makes it a breeze to roll it up and cinch it down. Love the bag so much that I bought another one for my 60m rope. I like that you can choose the color (as opposed to getting a random assorted color) so that I have different colors for different ropes and know which rope is in what bag.

Good range, easy to use

Mammut Pulse Barryvox Avalanche Beacon

Mammut Pulse Barryvox Avalanche Beacon

Rating for this product: 4 March 2, 2011

This is my first beacon, though I have used the Tracker before. I finally decided on the Pulse after doing some research and watching demonstration videos on YouTube. It seemed easy to use and great for multiple burial situations. I took it to my Avy 1 course and was happy to see that both of the instructors (a heli ski guide in AK and NZ, and the other in charge of SAR at a major ski resort) both used the same beacon. I found it easy to use during practice though sometimes you do need to be patient and let the processor lock onto the signal. The Pulse also had one of the longest ranges of all the different beacons others had in the class. On mine the signal dropped out at around 70m while my friend's Tracker dropped the signal at 35m out. I haven't yet practiced a multiple burial scenario yet. I also like the smaller size compared to some of the other beacons out there.

Works great!

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Rating for this product: 4 March 22, 2010

These work great for me, the flicklocks are easy to use and the poles seem fairly durable. The lower rubber grips are really nice for traversing. Would be nice if they collapsed shorter to stow away, but a 3 section pole would probably add weight.
