Salomon Elite 8 Skate Ski

September 7, 2009

The short answer is no. If you are really good at waxing you could take a skate ski and make it work for classic, but it would be less than ideal. A waxless classic ski (the kind with scales in the middle) would be extremely taxing to skate with. If you are looking for some good cross training for cycling and go skate style. I ditched the trainer years ago in favor of skate skis and loved it. It is much easier to get an aerobic workout from skating right away than it is from classic style. I would also suggest you take a lesson so you are less likely to form bad habits that become hard to break down the road.

Colnago C50 Carbon Road Frameset

August 24, 2009

It used to be that traditional frames flexed a little bit more since the overall geometry was bigger. However, with as stiff as frames have been getting the difference in flex between the two would be minimal. Sloping frames do tend to react a little quicker when cornering and accelerating than traditional frames but it sounds like that's not a big priority for you.
I would say go for the traditional if you're going to be doing longer rides without racing much.

The Masochist are a little bit stiffer and a little bit narrower than the Streaks but they weigh the same. If you're looking for a similar fit but a little more comfort then go with the Streaks, you won't be disiappointed.

I left it on the highest setting after the low battery warning and it lasted about 2.5 hours. Of course if I had it on the lower light setting it would have lasted longer.

Shimano Dura-Ace Hollowtech Double Crankset

May 20, 2009

Not completely true.
1st, if you change to this particular crankset you will need to get a matching bottom bracket.
2nd, you might be able to tune the front derailleur to shift a double instead of a triple but it will not be very smooth or consistent, you would be better off getting a front derailleur for a double instead.
3rd, your current rear derailleur is a long cage model which is used to handle the longer chain req'd by triples. Running a double would shorten the chain and cause your current derailleur to not function properly.

Good for the Park

Salomon XT Hawk Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XT Hawk Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 May 15, 2009

My favorite attribute of the shoe is how light and comfy it felt. My 8.5's weighed in at 11 oz. even. It felt like a running shoe, not a trail shoe, and as a consequence the XT Hawk offered little protection under foot on technical rocky terrain. The forefoot felt close to the ground but the heel was little more elevated than I prefer for trail running. The forefoot of the shoe feels completely disconnected from the mid to rear part of the shoe, and flexed considerably more than I am used to, giving me a blister at the flex point in the arch of both feet. The shoe felt right at home on the pavement that I used to connect to a separate section of trail and would serve someone well that needs a shoe for non-technical trails and occasional road running.
Pros: lightweight, lacing system, nice insoles, toe protection.
Cons: no protection under foot, considerable mid-sole flex.

Easton EC90 SLX Wheel Set - Tubular

Based on your weight I would definitely say yes. However, riding tubulars as your "most occasion" kind of wheelset is an expensive tire option, since you would have to carry an extra tubular tire in case of a flat. You might want to consider a clincher wheelset instead that takes a standard tube.

Good, despite being slightly unconventional

Suunto Altimax Sport Altimeter Watch

Suunto Altimax Sport Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 3 May 11, 2009

I bought this specifically for trail running and being able to track vertical gain. Initially I purchased the Vector for this same purpose but once I realized that I could not view the current logbook (the amount of ascent and descent) that I was recording I returned it for the Altimax, willing to give up the compass feature. I have found after several outings of 3000' to 6500' of vertical that it's been within +/- 100' on known routes.
Cons: I have small wrists and it's a large watch, both in diameter and depth. The stopwatch is a bit quirky. The seconds read on the top line, time of day on the middle line, and hours and mins on the bottom line. The split timer doesn't work like a normal stopwatch, where it starts a new timer, this one just pauses it so you can read the display while it continues to run in the background. Getting to the stopwatch function requires at least two to four pushes of the button (depending on the mode you're in). Starting/stopping the logbook and stopwatch are two separate functions (not a deal breaker, just a pain sometimes if you forget).
Good watch, very accurate in my experience, just a little cumbersome to navigate.

Shimano Ultegra Hollowtech Double Crankset

March 13, 2009

You can use this with an 8sp setup and it will work pretty good. If you want it to work better then use a 9sp chain, which will work with an 8sp cassette just fine. The only concern with that is that the cassette isn't too worn out and mated to the chain that's currently on there.I also own an old steel frame that I truly love and one thing to consider is that a stiffer crankset will only expose how "soft" the steel has become in your frame. You can check this by standing next to your bike and tilting it away from your body. Put the pedal closest to you in the 6 o'clock position and step on it while looking down at the bottom bracket. Check for flex in the frame or crankset.

I extended the straps on mine all the way and the measurement came to 56in. You should measure around the broadest part of you chest to see if it exceeds 56in. If so then it wouldn't fit.

SmartWool Adrenaline Medium Crew Sock - Women's

January 17, 2009

The Mediums are the heaviest weight in the Adrenaline line. The next step up is the Trekking line which is heavier.FYI, I was a big fan of the adrenaline's and switched to the PhD's. I was disappointed with how long they lasted, lack of cushion, and the amount of dirt that would accumulate on my foot. A friend of mine suggested the Darn Tough brand and I've never looked back. Same price range as the Adrenaline's but perform much better than the PhD's or Adrenaline's. Try them, you won't be disappointed.

The gray plastic bubble on top lifts off on a hinge to expose the tip of the bottle which you drink out of. The water bottle tip then slides up or down to allow flow. The gray bubble piece can be removed in order to make it a little more accessible. We always had water bottle kicking around while my kids were small and they never had a problem drinking out of water bottles. If your 2 year old can drink out of a sippy cup then they can handle a water bottle.

If you look not really that hard at the picture, you'll see the collar part in the upper left. It's kind of both. What is pictured above is indeed a leash. The loop in the upper left is for your hand, the carabiner clip is to hook on a collar. Judging by the price, if you purchased this you would get a collar not a leash. Shimano SH-R131S Road Cycling Shoe

December 21, 2008

Road bike shoes have a stiff sole in order to transfer power to the pedals. The downside of stiff soles is that it makes the shoes hard to walk in. MTB shoes tend to have a more flexible sole that makes them easier to walk in. So the choice of shoe really depends on how much walking you intend on doing in that shoe. More walking and I would buy a MTB shoe.

Polar RS200sd Heart Rate Monitor

December 17, 2008

If you don't want to void the warranty then you need to send it back to Polar. That being said the battery will last longer than the 2 year warranty so if you're brave and have some very small screwdrivers you can replace it yourself. I have done this successfully on my S710 several times now. The battery was a little tough to find, but I found a battery specialty shop that carried this medical grade battery. One thing to be careful of, when lifting off the back of the watch there is a rubber gasket that keeps the water out, just make sure it is seated correctly when you put it back together.

Salomon Trail Runner SW Shoe - Men's

December 14, 2008

Trail shoes tend to be very stiff with a protective layer for obstructions on the trails. I've used my trail shoes to run on the road from time to time and it becomes hard to land softly, especially if you run fast. The stiff sole forces your foot to almost "slap" the hard surface, causing more stress on your lower legs. If you are running exclusively on pavement/concrete go with a road specific shoe. If you are using them only occasionally on the hard surfaces then they will probably work.

I prefer these socks for cooler trail running conditions or when I want a little extra cushion. They're a little bit thicker than the PhD's so if you need to take up a little extra room in your shoes then they fit the bill. My only complaint has to do with my own foot size. I wear a size 8 to 8.5 which is the divider between Medium and Large. Med feels a bit tight, large has to much extra material.

Yakima 48 Inch RoundBar - 1 Pair

November 26, 2008

It really depends if the towers have locks or not. If there is a lock, you'll need the key to unlock the tower before you can release it from the roof. Once the tower is released the round metal part on top of the tower be free from the bars. Just remove the caps on the end of the bars and slide the towers off the end. Before you start look closely at the ends of the bars. If they appear fatter than the rest of the bar they have rusted (this is only a problem on older bars, new bars are now galvanized) and will present a real problem to get off. I had to basically destroy the end of the bar in order to get the towers off, not fun.

Patagonia Long Haul Runners Shorts - Men's

Patagonia Long Haul Runners Shorts - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 25, 2008

I've been using them for a little over a year and they are holding up well. No frayed threads or rips from trailside scrub oak. The pockets are situated high enough that a couple gels don't bounce. The other nice feature with the pockets is that the material keeps gel residue from getting on my skin.

Little spendy

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Green Insole

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Green Insole

Rating for this product: 3 November 25, 2008

In my trail runners I tried the blues before trying the greens. The green provided a bit more cushion but in the end I switched back to the stock insoles because they took up to much room inside the shoe. They did work great for my ski boots though, where I needed some space taken up. IMO the cost is high for amount of benefit.

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Blue Insole

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Blue Insole

Rating for this product: 3 November 25, 2008

I used these in my Montrail Vitesse and Continental Divide trail running shoes but didn't notice much difference at all. These shoes are already pretty stiff. In the softer Brooks Cascadias I noticed an immediate difference. My feet were not as sore after a trail run, they provided extra protection and of course support. So depending on the shoe they're going in they do exactly what they're supposed to. Dinged it a star for the price.

Use as a handheld

Platypus Platy Plus Bottle

Platypus Platy Plus Bottle

Rating for this product: 4 November 25, 2008

I rigged mine up with some cord threaded through holes in the extra plastic on the top and bottom so I can use it as a handheld while running/hiking long distances. I find it is easier to use this when getting water from springs instead of trying to fill my hydration pack bladder. When I'm done with it I just roll it up and stick it in the pack.

I ruined a pair while I running with them, too much sweat killed them. I do use them everywhere else though, great sound quality for a small price. For running I use the Sennheiser MX-75, they stand up to the sweat and stay in my ears.

SmartWool PhD Running Light Mini Sock - Men's

SmartWool PhD Running Light Mini Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 21, 2008

The Phd's were supposed to be knit tighter than previous versions in order to make them last longer. I have found they do last a bit longer but still not long enough for the $15 price tag. The two pair that I own have lasted 150 to 200 miles each. I wouldn't dare wear them for another ultra after doing a 50 miler in them. Darn Toughs are my new favorites.

I haven't noticed the toe seam, so that could be a foot shape/shoe issue, not sure. Hands down the best socks I have ever run in. I wore a pair for a 100 mile ultra and it's the first time I didn't get any blisters. Even with wet feet after a river crossing. Not only are they comfy, they last for a very long time. I have over 300 miles on a pair and they show no signs of wearing thin.

Good all-arounder

Montrail Continental Divide Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Continental Divide Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 21, 2008

I'll start by saying I was a die-hard Vitesse fan. I tried a few other models and these became my go to shoe after I figured out my size. In the Vitesse I was an 8, Cont Divs 8.5.
They're pretty stiff so running on harder surfaces will definitely take its toll. A bit heavy for me but they provide a lot of protection. I've had several pair over the last few years and they hold up to high mileage really well.
One thing I don't like about them is the ride height in the heel. I feel like I'm higher off the ground than I was with the Vitesse. The heel cup is also pretty deep, giving me some blisters on certain occasions.

Not for running

Petzl e+LITE Emergency Headlamp

Petzl e+LITE Emergency Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 November 21, 2008

I love this lightweight headlamp for everything but trail running. It's just not quite bright enough for moving quickly down the trail. Having said that, I always carry it as a backup to my Tikka XP, just in case.

Petzl Tikka XP Headlamp

Petzl Tikka XP Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2008

I was reluctant to plunk down $50 for a headlamp but it was worth every penny. I was worried about all the weight being in one spot creating a bounce while I ran at night but I hardly notice it. The buttons are easy to access and operate, no fiddling around turning it on and off.

Too wide

Nathan Elite 2V Pack

Nathan Elite 2V Pack

Rating for this product: 3 November 21, 2008

First off, I love Nathan products. I have the single bottle holder and HPL 020. This one just doesn't work for me. My elbows hit the tops of the bottles while running forcing me to hold them out. I do have a fairly narrow waist at around 30" so that could be part of the problem. If both bottles are full running creates to much bounce with all the weight, especially if the pockets have anything in them, gels, key etc. One easy modification I made to the pockets was a strap around the outside to cinch down contents and control the bounce.

Just right

Nathan Elite 1 Plus Pack

Nathan Elite 1 Plus Pack

Rating for this product: 4 November 21, 2008

I use this pack more than any other for trail running. I've used all different types of bottles in this from Ultimate direction to cycling bottles and they all fit nice and snug. The gel flask that it comes with is almost worthless, to stiff and poorly designed to get all the gel out. Other gel flasks work just fine in the holder. The pocket is big enough to hold some TP, granola bar and an extra gel. One time I put an extra gel flask in the zippered pocket and it was pretty uncomfortable as I could feel it in my back the whole time.
Otherwise a great waist pack.

Stays Put

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2008

From start to finish the pack doesn't move. Easily adjustable as the bladder drains to keep it tight on your back. The padding on the back is designed to ventilate so you don't get as sweaty as with other hydration packs.
I have a 1st gen HPL 020 and after about a year of use it developed a leak near the top, on the weld. I suspect the reason the leak develops is a combination of "saggy bladder syndrome" and the material the bladder is made of. Unlike the camelbaks which are held in place at the top, the nathan bladders are not held in place so it sags as it is emptied, bending in the same spots each time creating the leak. IMO a simple design flaw.

If you're as cheap as I am it can be fixed with a simple bike tire patch kit (vulcanizing kind) for $2 to $3 and a small plastic clip sewn into the top that holds the bladder in place, preventing the dreaded saggy bladder syndrome. It's worth noting that I made no attempt what so ever to contact Nathan about the leak.

Montrail Hardrock Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Hardrock Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 21, 2008

I love Montrails but not Hardrocks. Started with the Vitesse, then the Continental Divides, before I tried these. They were to heavy and long for my taste. I kicked rocks and tripped more on one of my standard trail runs than ever before with the Hardrocks. I gave them a few more tries before I gave them to a friend.

Used them for running a total of 3 times (4 to 5 hours total) before the stitching started to unravel. The material kept my hands warm but they fell apart. Ended up returning them for a different brand, Smartwool.
