The North Face Surge Backpack - 2015cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 2, 2011

The Surge descriptions don't touch on all the nice little features this bag has. I went through 4 bags this year trying to find the perfect motorcycling commute bag that could double as a travel bag or day hike bag, not to mention the other 3 daypacks I own that i've tried out. I just took it on an overseas trip and it was the most useful airplane backpack i've had. I happen to really like to keep things organized so i don't have to keep searching for things - with 2 little kids i have enough trouble keeping track of things!

features i really like:
1. The side mesh bags have 2 pockets each, with a side-opening mesh that's great for my work ID and can still fit a water bottle via the traditional top-opening mesh bag.
2. laptop sleeve fits 15" macbook pro. probably fits a hydration sleeve too as there is also the feeder tabs on the shoulder straps. Very easy to pull out laptop at airport security.
4. main compartment is used for my files and paperwork. works well for clothes on a short trip.
5. deluxe organizer section holds a wide range of stuff - pens, biz cards, DVDs, headphones, cell phone, extra motorcycle gear.
6. front pocket allows quick access to things like lip balm, my credit card sleeve, sunglasses - it's like a 2nd organizer pocket. 2 side-angle zips and a top clip gives me various ways to access stuff quickly.
7. bottom compartment is awesome - i love not having these small but bulky items in the way in the regular laptop & file sections!
8. most of the time the bag is fairly snug using the compression straps. i could probably buy a light bag of groceries and fit it all into this bag!

Only nit is the waist belt is standard skinny webbing, so may be OK for mountain bike rides where i don't want the bag sloshing around, but doesn't look like it'll really help redistribute weight on a hike.

thin but surprisingly warm

Patagonia Capilene 2 Zip-Neck - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 2 Zip-Neck - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 2, 2009

My wife got me into zip-necks some years ago and are my standard wear in the wintertime. I thought the Cap 2 would be too light considering how thin it is, but it is amazingly warm. It fits perfectly, very comfortable and good looking enough for me to wear to work. This zip neck is now getting more use than the other 4 I've got!
