Bio:
I almost have OCD when it comes to buying my gear. I research what I want. Then ask around about it. Then research some more. Then I'll sleep on it. Of course then comes more research and asking around. Then about 3 months after I actually needed the piece of gear I'll order 2 or 3 different ones so that I see them next to each other and make a decision before returning the others. It does take forever but I am rarely disappointed in what I do get.

June 22, 2011
I'll agree as well. I personally have always used a 2 piece paddle and like Mike and Rick said it works well for transport and storage. I also work in a rental shop and we use 2 piece paddles and they have withstood the use and abuse that comes with rental equipment so I definitely believe a good 2 piece paddle will work for you.

Yeah, as long as your cross bars are set the correct length apart you'll be fine. My friend has a long box like this on his Forester and the only thing we every worry about is that when you open the rear hatch that it won't hit the box. If it is going to hit the box, if you open it nicely it won't matter if it hits it so long as you aren't slamming the door open and hit the back of the cargo box.

Cleanwaste Portable Privacy Tent
June 12, 2011
I'm not sure it'd be able to hold a full 5 gallon shower between strength of the poles and it would probably hang down far enough that it would make you have to stoop down to get good pressure from the shower. If you have the right area you could set the shower up to hang above the tent with the hose hanging down through the opening in the roof. That would allow you to still let the water warm up a bit from the sun without having to move the shower into the tent to wash up.

Snow Peak Titanium Multi Compact Cookset
June 7, 2011
The small pot holds 24oz and the larger pot holds 34oz. For the pans the smaller is 12oz and the larger is 17oz. The smaller set would fit together since the pan is meant to act as a lid to the pot. I'm not exactly sure on the weight of the smaller set though. Could not find any information on it either.

I don't think the loss in mpg is even worth mentioning. The loss wouldn't even hit a quarter of your mpg. I've drive on several 8 hour plus trip to Colorado and Wyoming I really would say that I don't really notice the difference. The convenience of having the rack on top is definitely worth it.

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's
December 30, 2010
There is a 1 inch difference in sleeve length between the L and XL. (35in vs 36in) I think that the sleeve length would be more comfortable in the L. However, I'd be more concerned about fit in the torso if you are downsizing. If the torso is gonna be too tight, correct sleeve length is pointless then

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe - Women's
December 25, 2010
If you are mostly ever going to be using them on packed trails then the 22 would do perfectly fine. If you are going to be off running around off trails or in deep snow I'd go with the 25s. I don't think that you'd go wrong at all going with the 25s if you would use them on trails either though. Going with the 25s would definitely give you more options for use.

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Jacket - Men's
December 25, 2010
I don't think that the L would work out for you at all. The L being 2 1/2 inches smaller than your chest size would make it feel too tight to be comfortable at all especially during activity. Having the extra inch in sleeve length with the XL is going to be much more preferable than the chest being too tight.

I will say thought that I have last years and a buddy of mine has this years and I didn't notice any differences between the 2. I'd also say that I am more than happy with the performance and durability of last years model so you would be perfectly fine going with last years version.

Stoic Vamp 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down
December 11, 2010
It'll fit like a glove for sure. This will work for you but if you like a little extra wiggle room in the feet you might want to go with something else but at the same time you don't a lot of extra room at the feet that creates dead space. Its a tough choice. You'll definitely fit this but some people don't like to feel too tightly packed into a sleeping bag.

The fly, body and poles weigh 2lb 2oz.
The 2lb 10oz refers to its weight straight out of the box. So that includes packaging, tags, stuff sack, body, fly, poles, stakes and guy lines.
So the real weight with body, fly, poles and stakes is probably somewhere in between the 2.

Black Diamond QuickWire Quickdraw
December 5, 2010
Gate flutter is when a solid gate carabiner hits against the rock face and the gate pops open potentially allowing the rope to slip out. You can show this by taking a solid gate biner and hitting it against the palm of your hand. You should be able to get it to pop open doing that. Wiregate biners don't do this because the lower weight/mass of the gate makes it so you can't really pop it open. It isn't common but it is something I'd recommend using wire gates for to prevent. Wiregates are also lighter so it won't hurt to go wiregate.
Slings are usually 12cm long and that is usually just fine. It's a good idea to have some longer draws for those uncommon situations where you need them.
You don't necessarily need to have a variety of draws unless you want to. I personally have 10 of the Firewires and 2 longer draws and that works out fine for me
So if I were you I'd go with the Quickwire or the Freewire. Both have wiregates on the rope end of the draw. The Freewire is a little lighter since both biners are wiregates if weight is something you pay attention to though their weight difference isn't huge.

First Need XL Water Purifier
November 28, 2010
It would filter out sand and most silt. The small remainder of silt that the pre filter would not filter would be filtered out by the main filter.

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter
November 28, 2010
No, this will not work for her needs.
There are 3 things that your water filtration system needs to kill when looking at a system for international travel: bacteria, protozoa and viruses. Filters like this will kill the bacteria and protozoa but not the ultra small viruses. Purifiers will kill all 3. Purifiers are needed out the U.S. because of the significantly increased chance of viruses being in the water.
So for your needs I'd look under the water purification section. Some of the options you could look at are:
Steri-Pen
MSR Sweetwater Purifier System (Make sure its the Sweetwater Purifier and not the Sweetwater Microfilter)
MSR Miox
First Need
I've used all of these but the First Need and I'd recommend any of them. Each has some pros and cons behind them for their use. I'd HIGHLY recommend you do some more reading to understand the pros and cons and how to adjust for them.
This website will tell you about all of these systems and a few others:

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

I've worn this with the Patagonia Powder Bowl and they fit together fairly well. I'd definitely recommend going with the Powder Bowl too. It's a great jacket.

Giro G10 Helmet

I'm probably go with the L. It's a really tough call but I almost think that the M might feel too tight and you would more than likely not be able to get a balaclava or hat underneath it. I think the L would definitely probably fit better and you would be able to fit a hat/balaclava underneath it.

The Rockwall is more of a dark greyish color rather than black. Also, I think the pictures here are mixed up because if you look at the Patagonia website the Rockwall is definitely more dark grey than black as it appears here.

Columbia Bohemian Belle Bib - Girls'
November 26, 2010
The sizing chart from Columbia's website says the inseam is 32.5inches. The sizing chart here says it'd be 31in. I'd probably be more likely to believe Columbia's though since every once in a while the stats here get messed up.

Outdoor Research Credo Softshell Pant - Men's
November 24, 2010
Softshell pants like these balance weather resistance with breathability. If you tend to be doing high activity work and won't be standing in the snow, I think these would work out for you. If you tend to be doing low activity work, standing in the snow, or working when it's snowing I'd go with a hardshell pant. The hardshells are waterproof and more windproof so they won't really get soaked after a long time in the snow/weather but are nowhere near as breathable for high activity environments.
As far as size, the L is 35x33 and the XL is 38x34. If you are wearing hugely thick layers, you could probably use the L but it might be a bit tight over everything anyways. I think the XL would would be a bit more roomy/comfortable over everything, you just might have to wear a good belt on it.

I've had this for almost a year now and I really haven't noticed any down leaking at all. I've worn it quite a bit, compressed it into it's pocket/stuff sack several times and haven't noticed any leakage. I'd definitely recommend this one.

Yakima Fairings
November 21, 2010
To see what size of fairing you need you can do 2 things. 1. you can take whatever length of crossbars you used and size down a couple of inches and get that size. 2. You can take a tape measure and measure the width of the room of your car and get that size.
The Yakima fairing won't work unfortunately so you will have to get the Thule Fairing. Thule and Yakima use different size and shaped bars so you wouldn't be able to fit the fairings.
