CW-X Insulator Stabilyx Tight - Women's

October 28, 2009

You should definitely get the smalls. I am 5'10" 145 lbs and the mediums are great for me. The tights are supposed to be TIGHT. They should be difficult to get on and off. The difference between the stabilyx and the pro tights is the amount of knee support. The stabilyx is better for people with knee problems. Both tights have the same amount of hamstring support so either one would be good for you in that regard. Hope that helps!

Icebreaker GT150 Dash Crewe - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 28, 2009

This is my favorite shirt to workout in. It's very lightweight and breathable with the mesh sides and what not. It also doesn't stink and pulls moisture away from your body so you don't feel dampness. Plus, the blue and green colors are really cool looking and the fit is great. A++

prAna Moto Capri - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 October 28, 2009

These capris are great, but I was slightly disappointed they don't flare out at the bottom like the picture implies. I love capris that do that. The fit is a little weird-kinda baggy in the backside and tighter toward the bottom. Still cute though, just not perfect.

Awesome Waterproof Overshirt

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Women's

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 28, 2009

I wouldn't call this a jacket. It is made for being active so it's pretty thin. I love using it for runs on cold days and anything I do when there is some drizzling goin on. Keep in mind it is made to be close-fitting so size up if you want it looser. I am 5'10" 145 lbs and the medium fit me beautifully. Great length in the arms and not awkwardly tight anywhere. Plus, the merlot color is very pretty!

Yeah, it is more fuschia than maroon. It is a deep pink color-not neon or anything. The picture is pretty accurate, it is just a tad lighter and brighter than the photo.

Seriously Warm and Pretty Light too!

Outdoor Research Refuge Down Jacket - Women's

Outdoor Research Refuge Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 October 28, 2009

This jacket will warm you up in no time. I cannot wear it in anything about 40 degrees because I end up way too hot!I am more than happy with that because I got the jacket for mountaineering when its super chilly out. It works perfectly for that. I do kind of agree that the styling is not terribly attractive, but this is not made for wearing around the city. Plus, I don't understand all the complaints about the hood: It's removable people! If you don't like it, you can just take it off. Overall, a great buy if you can get it on sale.

Finally the shell I've been searching for!

Marmot Wasatch Jacket - Women's

Marmot Wasatch Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2009

My perfect shell. It is bombproof gortex, has high hand pockets for wearing a pack or harness and a hood that fits with a helmet but doesn't look ridiculous without one either. The best part is the fit. I love that you can actually see some body shape with this jacket! My only beef with arcteryx in the past has been there boxy styling with flappy arms. I finally found a jacket that has all the perks of arcteryx without the ugly fit! As a side note I am 5'10" 145lbs and got a medium which fits perfectly with room for a few layers underneath.

Patagonia Shortie Board Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 18, 2009

I think these shorts are totally adorable. Just keep in mind that they have a low rise and very short inseam. You cannot hide in these that is for sure. The sizing seems normal for patagonia, I got an 8 which is regular for me.

Great Technical Piece, but Careful with Sizing!!!

Patagonia Ascensionist Softshell Jacket - Women's

Patagonia Ascensionist Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 29, 2009

This jacket is the best--waterproof, very breathable and great range of motion. Perfect for climbing and skiing and whatever else active you can come up with. I must comment on the messed up sizing. I have this jacket in an XS and it fits perfectly. I have room for one or two layers underneath no problem. I am 5'10" and 145 lbs!!! I have never worn XS anything in my life. Even in Patagonia I am normally a medium or large in everything. Be really careful with sizing on this one. Otherwise, it is an awesome awesome jacket.

Perfect Summer Dress

Patagonia Amaia Dress - Women's

Patagonia Amaia Dress - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 27, 2009

This is my favorite dress I own-BY FAR. I have the blue flowery print one which is very pretty. The fabric is very light and airy so it is great for hot weather. The cut is adorable and very flattering: fitted in the bust, but the fabric skims right over the midsection and flares out at the bottom. Cute cute cute. Every time I wear this, I get all kinds of compliments and people wondering where I got it.

Ideal Pack for Alpine-Style Mountaineering

Osprey Packs Exposure 50 Backpack - 2800-3200 cu in

Osprey Packs Exposure 50 Backpack - 2800-3200 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 August 27, 2009

Let me just start by saying this pack is the most comfortable pack EVER. I have serious problems with my hipbones getting bruised by the belts on a lot of packs (to the point where I have to cut trips short b/c I can't actually carry a pack anymore). This belt doesn't cause any of that. On the technical side, there are lots of places to attach an axe, crampons, helmet, snowshoes, whatever on the outside of the pack which is great. I will say that I agree with other reviews that this pack is definitely not bomb-proof. The fabric is pretty thin and I feel like I have to baby it a little bit to keep it from getting ripped up. But that is a minor thing, overall I haven't found a better pack for quick and light alpine trips.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 27, 2009

This jacket seriously is the only shell you will ever need. I would know living in the rainy rainy Pac NW. It stops wind in its tracks and can take buckets and buckets of water all day while you stay perfectly dry inside. It is also pretty breathable for a shell--it does not have the inner condensation problems of gore-tex paclite for instance. To top off the amazing technical performance, the jacket looks like a million bucks and the fit is spot on. Couldn't ask for more. Sizing wise, I have the medium and am 5'10" 145lbs with room for layers underneath.

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 August 27, 2009

These crampons are awesome. I have used them on all sorts of snow from rock hard neve to the softer mushy stuff. The Sabretooths bite into all of it very solidly--including on more moderate slopes and really steep stuff. The micro-adjustment system is also great because you can fit these spikes exactly to your boots so there is no unwanted foot movement in the crampons. On my Lowa boots, these fit like a glove after only a few small adjustments. There isn't a better crampon that can cover such wide variety of uses out there.

Bomber Boots

Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 17, 2009

These boots are freakin amazing. They are definitely stiff mountaineering boots (like you would want), but they are comfy and have excellent freedom of movement at the same time. Straight from the box I have never had even the tiniest hot spot anywhere on my feet. I have even worn them with just liner socks and my feet were comfy as a clam. On rocky approaches these are great for ankle support and solid gripping soles. A crampon fitting side note: the BD Sabretooth pros fit on these very well, but the front bail is a little off. It does not fit flush with the boot and allows for side to side toe movement in the crampons (not good). I find the Sabretooth Clip crampons to be a perfect match for these boots. Very solid fit and no extraneous foot movement at all.

Kavu Hempster Capri- Women's

Kavu Hempster Capri- Women's

Rating for this product: 2 July 26, 2009

These shorts are indeed bizarre. The waist and hip area is huge but the legs are very form-fitting. This has the effect of accentuating the hips and thighs. This is not a problem area for me, but these shorts make it look like I have serious junk in the trunk. I don't really think they would look good on any body type, except maybe if you are a stick or something.

The Best Stove PERIOD.

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 July 26, 2009

This thing is wicked fast at boiling water, lightweight, packs small and is a cinch to use. I seriously don't know why anyone would buy another stove. I have packed this thing with snow and it was boiling in a few minutes (at about 7,000 ft). It may not be ideal for super high altitude mountaineering, but for everything else (which is what 99.9% of people do) it has no rival.

Mountain Hardwear Stiletto 1 Tent 1-Person 3-Season

July 17, 2009

Well A guy below is 6'3" and 225 and he says he is comfortable so I would go with that although he might be used to cramped quarters. Other than that this is a solid tent-you definitely get what you pay for. I have the MH Sprite (which is not free standing either) and it can be somewhat annoying pitching it on rocky or super hard packed ground, but that is what hammers/nalgenes are for.

Rating for this product: 4 June 28, 2009

These are not really designed to be used for winter activities, more for shoulder season stuff. I wear them when camping as pajamas and they keep me super warm all night. They are also useful for higher altitude backpacking and hiking to take the chill off. For me, the fit is very flattering and true to the sizing chart as is the case with icebreaker products.

Rating for this product: 5 June 28, 2009

I was super surprised with how small this pad rolls up when it first arrived. It is hardly much bigger than a Nalgene. That is a huge plus added to the fact that it is very comfortable when inflated and can take a beating. Mine has not gotten any holes or leaks yet and I have used it probably 80 or 90 nights.

Not only are these pants extremely comfortable but they also are easy to dress up or down. It is hard to find sweatpants that dont make you look frumpy and super casual. I have pretty much lived in this for a few weeks since I got it. The fit is perfect for me (I got a medium and am 5'10" 140lbs) and the fabric feels amazing. The color on the sundried tomato is pretty good looking too (a bit darker than photo). My favorite thing about this sweatshirt is inside of the kangaroo pocket there is a zippered pocket in the stomach panel so you can put stuff in without worrying about it falling out the sides. Genius. Arctery'x strikes again.

Mountain Hardwear GTX 2.5 Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 May 12, 2009

Just got this jacket for a ridiculously cheap price and was really excited about it. Unfortunately, the large is made for a 7 foot amazon woman. Seriously, I am 5'10" with long arms and the sleeves on this were SEVERAL INCHES past my fingertips. As far as the fit of the waist lets just say I could be pregnant with twins and still zip this thing up comfortably. I think I would be OK in a medium and still have lots of room for layers, but maybe even a small would be better? The fleece lining in some parts is super cool and not thick at all which is a plus. I can totally see how it would keep you warmer. If you get this jacket to fit you decently, it would be an awesome shell.

Marmot Radiant Jacket - Women's

Marmot Radiant Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 February 26, 2009

So this is definitely a different looking fleece material. It is kind of carpet-like with a hint of shine. I happen to like this look when paired with the fitted cut of the jacket. If you are not a fan of fitted, furry jackets then don't buy it. This jacket also happens to be very warm and stylish, although I probably will never use it as a technical piece. As a side note, it does run a bit small, similar to other marmot fleeces and softshells. If you are at the upper end of a size, definitely order a size bigger.

Marmot Gravity Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 26, 2009

LOVE this softshell. It is fleece lined and thick, which keeps me nice and toasty. It also repels water really well for a softshell. I have to say I wear it a lot more than my Arc'teryx Gamma softshell, which is much thinner and wayyyy more expensive. I would recommend this Marmot over the Arc'teryx any day. Sizing wise this jacket runs a little small so keep that in mind.

Arc'teryx Scorpion Pant - Women's

February 24, 2009

yes I have seen these pants in "short" sizing. However, you better have really short legs because the inseam on the regular is only 29 inches. The fit is the same on both besides the difference in length.

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Women's

February 24, 2009

If you want to put bulky layers under it, get a medium. It will be somewhat loose- I am 5'10" and 140 lbs and I wear a medium, which is a bit roomy on me.

The North Face Kira Triclimate Jacket - Women's

February 23, 2009

Yes. Here is what TNF says about hyvent: We incorporated this technology by utilizing a polyurethane (PU) coating that consists of a tri-component multi-layer formula for waterproof protection, moisture permeability, and durability. This technology was lab tested in The North Face quality assurance lab to ensure the best possible durability and function. The average breathability achieved using HyVent™ is 650g/m2/24 hours on the Moisture Vapor Transfer Rate (MVTR) scale*. To test the level of waterproofness we subjected HyVent™ garments to 20 wash cycles* where on average they retained over 60 PSI on the waterproofing Mullens Test*.

it depends where you live. The shipping from backcountry.com is really fast. Nothing I have ordered has ever taken longer than five days and I live in Seattle (they ship from Salt lake City).

They are down fill, so you can't exactly throw them in the washing machine, but you can wipe them off with a damp cloth, which works well.

I'm officially an Icebreaker junkie!

Icebreaker SuperFine140 Butterfly Line Scoop T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Icebreaker SuperFine140 Butterfly Line Scoop T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2009

Let me just say that icebreaker is amazing. if you do not have any, you need to get some. It is not itchy, very warm and lightweight. I will admit it is expensive, but I have never had to pay full price since it is always on sale. This shirt specifically has a great slim, long fit, which is what I love in shirts. It is longer in the back than the front, something else I like. The blue color is so vibrant, the photo doesn't do it justice. One other note, I buy long sleeve icebreaker tops in large, but t-shirts in medium so it fits closer to the skin. Their t-shirts seem to be a little wider than the long sleeve shirts.

Patagonia Fjord Flannel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Patagonia Fjord Flannel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2009

Let me just start by saying the material feels amazing! It is very soft against the skin. Also the cut is nice, it is not super boxy like a lot of flannel shirts. Be aware that it is a thick, warm shirt, so maybe not the best for hotter climates.

Arc'teryx Rho AR Long Underwear Top - Women's

I'm about the exact same measurements and I wear a medium. The arms are totally long enough. Just to let you know it is definitely form-fitting in case she likes things a bit looser.

Best Down jacket You'll Ever Wear!

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Women's

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2009

Don't pay attention to the other review on this jacket. I am assuming she is talking about the silver or blue color, but I have green and it doesn't so the feathers at all. On the performance side, this jacket is amazing warm considering how light and thin it is. I get cold very easily but in this I am cozy down to 20 degrees with just a light baselayer. This is a great technical jacket for that reason because it would pack down really small and light. It is also windproof (no wind through zipper at all) and repels light precipitation. I love the look of the jacket too!

velcro would probably be the simplest or a few snaps or something like that. I can't really think of anything else that wouldn't require serious modifications to the jacket.

You aren't doing anything wrong. Down coats are just hard to clean. Dirt and stains don't come out well in general. You are going to have to deal with some dirt if you have a white one. Buy a darker color if you don't like it.

It is not available in the size and color you want. You can ask backcountry.com live chat if they will be getting more. Can't help ytou with the weight, but it can't be over three or four pounds. It squishes down really small so it would be good for travel.

Icebreaker BodyFit260 Tech Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

February 12, 2009

Yes they are quite a bit longer than the icebreakers without thumb holes (like two inches). I do usually just leave the thumb loop on most of the day depending on what I am doing like you mentioned.

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Women's

February 12, 2009

It is an awesome layer for mountaineering since it is so light and warm. I don't know how it would be in really windy wintery conditions, but in decent weather it is unbeatable (I use it on Mt. Rainier). The thinness of the jacket also means its really versatile for layering so I would definitely recommend it for technical use.

The North Face Atlantic Jacket - Women's

February 8, 2009

It also depends on your hip and chest measurements. I am guessing you are on the small side in both of those in which case a small should be okay. The only worry would be if you have long arms. Then I would say a medium.
