Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2009

I'm 6'1" 225#. 50 YO. Been skiing for 40 years. Very aggressive, strong and athletic skier. I demoed a pair of Mantras at Keystone for two days this past March. Great fun. Even as wide as they are I could easily string together tight slalom turns. Letting them loose in big super G style runs was awsome. They were very fast and very stable at speed.(54mph by GPS) Handled the afternoon ice with ease. I did have trouble with them in the bumps. But I had a huge grin on my face everywhere else.

Salomon Impact 10 Ski Boot - Men's

May 20, 2009

I wear an 11 1/2 or 12 street shoe. I bought these first in 29.5. The shell was way too big. 3+ fingers behind my heel. switche to the 28/28.5 shell with a 28.5 liner. They fit great. Put some heat moldable insoles in and these boots rip. I've been skiing for almost 40 years. These are by far the most comfortable boots I've owned. Stiff and responsive. They let me put everything into the ski almost instintively. $299.00 for these boots is a steal.

Integral Designs Siltarp2

Integral Designs Siltarp2

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2009

Huddled under this tarp, in the rain, just north of Rocky Mountain National Park. Rained on us ALL day. Set this up near the fire and played poker and just hung out. Worked great. Extremely lightweight. It's very slick and that made getting it back into the tiny stuff sack interesting. It rolls up smaller than a Nalgene and weighs less than a full bottle. Perfect to cover the cooking and hanging out area at basecamp.

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2009

I bought these for Ranier and maybe Aconcogua. Haven't been to either yet but I have worn these on several winter 14ers in Colorado. Awsome boots. They fit a little narrow. I have medium width feet and these felt a bit snug at first. Now they feel great. Warm, waterproof and comfortable. They are stiff. They hold onto my BD sabertooth crampons like boot and crampon are one piece. I am a big fan of La Sportiva. These are the best for the money.

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy

May 16, 2009

If you get sore hips from sleeping on your side, try this tip I got while in the Marines. Scoop out a shallow trench about an inch deep under your hips. Helps relieve pressure and keeps your spine better aligned.

MSR SweetWater Purifier System

MSR SweetWater Purifier System

Rating for this product: 5 May 15, 2009

I really like this system. I've used it 10 or 12 times so far. I like being able to attach directly to a Nalgene and mine came with a Platypus bladder. It doesn't flow as fast as my son's Katydyn Hiker but it's not that much slower and I have peace of mind that it's getting everything. Plus the MSR is easier to clean in the back country.

Snow Peak GigaPower Stove, Titanium Auto Ignition

Rating for this product: 5 May 15, 2009

This tiny little stove is great. Burns hot. Simmers. And is very light. The auto light doesn't work very well but that's no big deal for me. Save a few dollars and get the manual light. I had an MSR Whisperlite International. I gave it to my son. No more liquid fuel hassles. No sputtering and flare ups.

Tore liner in one finger. Otherwise great gloves!

Backcountry.com Stoic Inbounds Glove - Men's

Backcountry.com Stoic Inbounds Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 19, 2009

Got back from 4 days at Keystone. The gloves worked great. They are very snug at the wrist and required a bit of effort to get on. I had a couple of very cold fingers at the start of the day but they quickly warmed up. They stayed dry on the outside but got damp on the inside from sweat.
I would give them five stars but the insulation in the tip of the middle finger is torn letting my finger poke through to the leather. Probably have to exchange them. I will get the same ones, though.

Volkl Unlimited AC50 Alpine Ski w/ Motion iPT Wide Ride 14.0 Binding

March 16, 2009

How do these compare to the Mantra? I just got back from two days at Keystone. I demoed a pair of Mantra 184's. Snow was hard with ice. The Mantras were fast (hit 55.6 MPH on the GPS :)) on the steep groomers but tended to skid and slide a bit. The rental boots were only a 50 stiffness which probably contributed alot to the lack of solid control. I want something that will hold a turn a little harder. I have been skiing for almost 40 years but this was my first time in nine years. (No excuse. I know.) I am 50, 6'1", 225 lbs expert. ThanksMark

Rating for this product: 3 April 5, 2006

These goggles were acceptable. They fit well over my glasses. The goggles never fogged up, but my glasses did so the result was the same. They also seemed to fit too low on my nose restricting breathing. They are well constructed and work as intended. I just wish there were more choices for those of us who wear glasses. I guess it's time for Lasik.

Dakine Blade

DAKINE Blade Backpack - 1824 cu in

DAKINE Blade Backpack - 1824 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 4, 2006

This is a very well built backpack. It’s well thought out and designed. It is a large pack best suited for backcountry use. It is big enough to carry extra clothing, food, and survival gear. If you head deep into the wilderness to ski or snowboard and the possibility of an unplanned overnight exists, or you are the type that likes to be prepared for the worst then this is the backpack for you.

If you want a pack to carry your lunch at the resort this is way too much.
