Arc'teryx Silo 18 Backpack - 1098cu in

June 8, 2009

I imagine the HDPE frame sheet is removable; can anyone confirm this? I'm am looking to use the Silo as a summit pack, and will need to be able to fit this pack easily into my larger approach pack, so I would appreciate input on any other bulky features (such as foam built into the back panel).

Also, any word on how well it carries an ice axe?

Thanks for the help!

Great alpine/endurance layer

Arc'teryx Accelero Pullover Top - Men's

Arc'teryx Accelero Pullover Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 20, 2009

I love this layer. This is my goto layer for alpine/trad when the wind isn't kicking too much, and for cold weather aerobic workouts on most all days when a vest just won't do. I have yet to find any cons with this light layer, although it does not block the wind quite as well as the MH transition pull-over, but that is to be expected (the MH top is made with Windstopper).

The deep zip allows for adequate ventilation as well as helping put on and take off the layer easily.

The fit is athletic, but not overly snug, as the MH transition can be. I'm 5'7, 135, with a typical climber build, and the small fits me just perfectly.

There is only one small pocket that is sized well for keys.

Awesome for alpine climbing!

Mountain Hardwear Transition Zip T - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Transition Zip T - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 20, 2009

This is my new 'goto' wind layer for alpine and trad accents. (I also like the Arc'teryx Accelero pullover though) It is super light, for a softshell, and offers much better durability and breathability than traditional wind shirts.

Like most MH tops it runs pretty snug to say the least. I'm 5'7, 135, with a typical climber build and would have a hard time with the small if it were any smaller; in the torso anyway. The sleeves are a little long, but not unbearable; I have a dead even monkey index and the sleeves come right to my wrists when my arms are fully extended.

The zip could be a little deeper for better ventilation and easier entry/exit, but it is really not bad.

The one pocket is reasonably sized for small items. This is a light piece and is not meant for cargo toting, so I have no problem here (the pocket is substantially larger than the pocket in the Arc'teryx Accelero).

All in all another great product from MH!

Great edging, but....

Five Ten Anasazi Lace-Up V2 Climbing Shoe - Men's

Five Ten Anasazi Lace-Up V2 Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 7, 2008

Like the old pinky lace ups, these shoes edge with the best of them, but I have to ask: is the heel really redesigned? The pinkies had terrible heels and these don't seem any better to me. I absolutely love the shoe when it comes to power edging, but the heel has got to be over hauled for real.

A pretty nice shirt, but nothing special. The fit is a little baggy for my taste.

Mammut Moses Wire Gate Carabiner

Mammut Moses Wire Gate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 October 7, 2008

My new favorite biner! Super light, and the bearing surface near the base is a little more substantial then the new BD equivalent. I'll be slowly adding these to my rack as needed. Although, I should note they are on the smaller side.

Great for easy clipping

DMM Eclipse Wire Gate Carabiner

DMM Eclipse Wire Gate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 October 7, 2008

For their size, these are pretty darn light and they clip like a dream. I'm not a ice climber, but I imagine these would be great for gloved hands.

Awesome!

DMM Shield Quickdraw

DMM Shield Quickdraw

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2006

The quickdraws are hard to touch. They are super lightweight, and I really like the action. I have heard some comment that the action is a little stiff, but I think it's right on.

The only con is the price. If money is no object, or if they’re having a killer sale, I say go for it.

Black Diamond Superslacker Rope Bag - 1831 cu in

Black Diamond Superslacker Rope Bag - 1831 cu in

Rating for this product: 3 July 8, 2006

Nice tarp and easily holds my 10.2 plus draws. The only flaw I have found is in the strap. If you are hiking any distance, the strap is not very comfortable and will work loose if you have a heavy load. You can tie of the loose ends of the strap, but this is a pain in the neck when you want to make adjustments. Overall it’s okay, but I was hoping for a better product from BD. The Metolius or newer pack-like bags are a better choice from what I have seen.
