Grivel Air Tech Racing Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2006

This is a decent all purpose axe, which is high praise considering its ridiculous lightness. Sometimes ultralight gear isn't worth the price, this is!

Smith Sequel 2 Sunglasses - Interchangeable

Rating for this product: 4 September 23, 2006

I like changing the lenses as light conditions change. It could be a little easier but works well once you're used to it. Same great quality as all the other Smith's I've owned.

Black Diamond Angles Pitons

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2006

The #1 (1/2") angle fits perfectly in a 12mm drilled hole (standard Petzl bit size). Consider carrying one of these, a hammer and a drill along with the rest of your kit for more serious canyoneering routes. Hopefully you'll never need it!

Black Diamond Firstlight Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2006

I couldn't be more psyched with this tent, but you have to realize its limitations. Floor space is limited but headroom is good. Its superlight, not super durable. You have to be careful with the fabric, and it’s not very breathable so don't zip it up completely and consider having a tiny section of sponge with you to wipe up condensation if you use in cold or especially humid weather.

Tributary Tomcat Solo Inflatable Kayak

Rating for this product: 4 September 23, 2006

I've paddled a number of other inflatables. The tomcat is by far the lightest, which is great for portages. Overall whitewater performance rates 4 of 5. Seems plenty durable after 1 year of use even though its an inexpensive boat and light weight.

Petzl Tikka Plus Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2006

Batteries seem to last forever. Small and light. I keep one in glove box, one in my CamelBak, and one in the house. No need to ever get caught in the dark without a light again.

all purpose footwear

Salomon Techamphibian Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2006

These have worked for hiking, trail running, and canyoneering. They even make good camp slippers/clogs as the heel folds down flat. Good traction on all surfaces, stable for running, drain quick when wet but unlike some similar shoes don't fill with sand as quickly. Definitely not for narrow feet.

Suunto X6HR Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Rating for this product: 4 September 23, 2006

Ok, you don't need a watch that tracks your workouts and downloads to your computer but it sure is a cool way to monitor your training. This watch does it all if you've got the patience to read the large manual.

best running fanny ever

Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar Pack - 488 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2006

This pack is so awesome for running, beats everything else when you need to carry enough for a long outing. If you cinch the waist strap while the upper lumbar compression straps are loose, and then tighten the lumbar straps the pack doesn't bounce a bit even with heavy load and rough trail running. These have been around a really long time but there's really nothing to improve (but make sure to remove the ridiculous shoulder strap immediately).

great travel pants

The North Face Apex AlphaChalk Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 23, 2006

Nice fabric is comfortable, dries quick, and holds up well for such a light fabric. The zip-off design is good, easy to use and unnoticeable when you're wearing either the pant or short. Only area for improvement: the cargo pocket could use a zipper or at least a bigger tab of VELCRO®-Brand fastener.
