A great little table

ALPS Mountaineering Camp Table

ALPS Mountaineering Camp Table

Rating for this product: 4 July 2, 2009

If you want a light, small, packable table this is a great table. Will if blow over in a breeze if there is nothing on it? Sure, but that is because it is so light. If you want heavy, get a boat anchor.

Is it built like a brick $#%*house? No, again because it is so light and portable.

If you want a place to put your beer, or set a stove without putting them on the ground, this table will do the trick.

It's not a head lamp, but...

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 June 11, 2009

I don't own one, yet, but my partner brought one on a Shasta climb/ski, and it was great for getting ready for a 2AM start. Great circle of light, light, compact, etc, but when we went to leave he discovered he left his headlamp in the car. It turns out clipping this lantern to a pack throws plenty of light for skinning and climbing.

I would hope he learned his lesson about not forgetting a head lamp, but this worked so well, he probably didn't.

Good as a second pad or by iteslf

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2009

I got this to go under my Prolite 3 for winter use, but find it has many other uses. It is pretty comfortable by itself, but a little thin. Is is light and cheap, so I don't mind abusing it, i.e. sitting on sharp rocks or wet snow.

It works as a back pad in fast and light backpacking/climbing set ups.

I am sure I will find many other uses for this pad as well.

Simply the best stove out there

MSR DragonFly Stove

MSR DragonFly Stove

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2009

I have been using this stove for years, and just experienced my first problem. Well, not really, when I lite it it burned very slowly. All I had to do is clean the nipple with the tool and it was back to welding torch intensity. That was the first time I had to clean it after untold number of uses.

While I have never needed to burn donkey pee in it, it is nice to know it is an option while in some remote outpost. J/K, but it will burn just about anything else.

This is a solid, dependable stove for ALL CONDITIONS. It is not the lightest, or most compact stove on the market, but it is the best all around stove, period.

My go to jacket for most days

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2009

I wear this most ski days, and only switch if the weather is really nasty, and I want something with a hood. I liked it so much I bought one for my wife as well, so she now rarely uses her MH hard shell.

It has a slim fit, so it won't take a lot of thick mid-layers, but it is warm enough by itself for many days, and a moderately thick mid-layer works well. (I have used a Patagonia down sweater to great effect.)

The only down side are the sleeve cuffs don't seal well, but that is not a problem with gauntleted gloves.

I haven't been in a down pour, but it works well in light rain and snow, and I have yet to get wet in it.

All around good pack

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2009

At 5'10" 175lb I found the 32L L/XL works well. The avalung in the shoulder strap does feel a little off, but carrying skis with boots, crampons, ice axe, and a days worth of other gear got this pack well over 30lbs, and it still carried very well (at that weight no day pack is perfectly comfortable.)

It is loaded with great features, and ski carry options (I prefer A frame). The only down side was the loading design makes it hard to get to items deep in the pack, especially when carrying skis.

It cinches down for lift use, and I have been happy to have the avalung feature on big pow days in bounds. I even used it once at the resort when I fell and ended upside down in deep powder. It is a real handy feature for skiing near tree wells.

Essential gear

Black Diamond Whippet Self-Arrest Ski Pole

Black Diamond Whippet Self-Arrest Ski Pole

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2009

Just had my first trip with this, and will never head to the steeps with out it ever again. I was happy at how well it worked with a small ice axe while front pointing up a steep chute through the red bank on Mt. Shasta.

This is not a replacement for an ice axe on real climbs, but it is adequate for most ski tours, and is a great second tool when you find yourself on something steeper and icier then planned.

Great solo tent, but still good for two

Black Diamond I-Tent Standard 2-Person 4-Season

Black Diamond I-Tent Standard 2-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2009

This is my go to tent for solo trips since it is so light, but still bomber. It is fine as a two man tent, but it is a little tight. If you anticipate limited area to pitch a tent, i.e. you have to dig a platform of a steep slope, this is the tent to have. It fits people to 6'2", but is snug for them. At 5'10" I am perfectly happy in this tent, no matter what the weather throws at me.

More then a one season tent

The North Face VE 25 Tent 3-Person 4-Season

The North Face VE 25 Tent 3-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2009

While this is one of the most bomb proof tents made for winter use, I use mine all the time in all seasons. It vents well, and I have used it in Hawaii as well as on the Green River in Utah. There are lighter tents for such uses, but if you want only one tent, this is the one. For high altitudes, regardless of season this is a great tent. Let the winds blow, just be prepared to take in others whose 3-season tents have blown down.
The only down side is weight, hence only 4 stars.
