prAna Mojo Short - Men's

April 5, 2010

Do these have a drawstring or anything to stop them from coming off when you dive in the water? If not any other suggestions for a do it all short that would work in this setting (hiking, climbing, swim/surf)? Thanks!

Best shorts I've owned

The North Face Paramount Cargo Short - Men's

The North Face Paramount Cargo Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 21, 2010

These are some great shorts! Not sure if I have the current or past model, but I particularly like the slash style front and back pockets that are huge and positioned perfectly so that you're not sitting on the stuff in your back pocket! The picture does not represent this well enough, but it's very cool and I've never seen that on other shorts. The material is also great and quick-drying. I am curious to check out the Prana Mojo's in comparision after looking at all the great reviews. I was also in the market for some new board-shorts, but might consider holding off and seeing how these or the Prana's serve in this capacity due to their quick-drying material. As far as size, I wear a 32-33 in all pants, jeans, shorts (6' and 175lbs) and a medium is perfect. Check 'em out, I think you'll be happy!

Fine bag

Arc'teryx C40 Chalk Bag

Arc'teryx C40 Chalk Bag

Rating for this product: 4 March 8, 2010

This thing gets the job done. Tough material with sturdy ring to keep it open. Mine is the older version without the belt loop problem mentioned in previous comments, which from the looks of it and review of comments is better than the current design. Anyway, it's a chalk bag. It holds chalk, you can get your hand into it while it's held open, it closes to prevent spillage, and it looks cool with the arc'teryx skeleton logo. If the price were half, it would be perfect.

Very good if somewhat expensive Day Pack

The North Face Recon Backpack - 2015cu in

The North Face Recon Backpack - 2015cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 8, 2010

I've had the recon for a few years now (older model, but pretty much the same thing). It has held up very well and has great features. The front pouch is useful for just tossing in frequently accessed items. Stow-away hip belt is great for when you need it and nice to be able to tuck it away when you don't. All seems, zippers, etc seem to hold up very well with no problems encountered so far. Pouch in main pocket holds my laptop perfectly. I have yet to use it with my hydration bladder. The only negative that I can think of is the price is a bit high for what many use as a kids daypack, but this can be used for much more!

Great Shoe!

Five Ten Moccasym Climbing Shoe

Five Ten Moccasym Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 March 8, 2010

I've been climbing in the 5.10 Mocs for a few year now and they are great. I wear a size 9.5 street shoe (as measured on one of those foot measuring devices with socks off), and I wear the Mocs in a size 8.5. These were very tight originally but have stretched and are now perfect (comfy while climbing, but not what you want to stand around in too long). Very sensitive and sticky, great for edging, smearing, and crack climbing. I love the slipper design, nice to be able to just pull of and on when you need to with no lacing. They have held up well through many days of gym and outdoor granite sport climbing and bouldering. I know there are many great shoes out there these days at great prices, but if sized right and given a good break in, this one will not dissapoint!

Great Harness even compared to more expensive alternatives!

Black Diamond Bod Harness

Black Diamond Bod Harness

Rating for this product: 5 March 4, 2010

Great basic and surprisingly comfortable harness! I have climbed in a BD Bod harness for the past few years and recently "upgraded" to a BD AL Momentum when I needed to retire the old Bod harness for safety. Tharness was everything I needed and nothing I didn't. I'm a bit surprised to report that the first couple uses of my BD AL Momentum has actually been LESS comfortable than the Bod (likely due to less width in leg loops. Anyway, either of these harnesses are great and with important gear that is weight bearing/life-dependant like a harness, the difference in price should be viewed in my opinion as trivial. Get the one that feels right for you. Surprised to see the Seth Morrison review from a few days ago for the Alpine Bod! If he's using it then, hey, how bad can it be! I would have thought they would have had him decked in some super bells and whistles harness at 3-4 times the price of this one. Love your work Seth! Keep it up and be safe!

Great basic and surprisingly comfortable harness! I have climbed in a BD Bod harness for the past few years and recently "upgraded" to a BD AL Momentum when I needed to retire the old Bod harness for safety. Mine is a little bit different (Bod not Alpine Bod) in that it has a little bit of padding around the waist belt and has a belay loop. Anyway, this harness was everything I needed and nothing I didn't. I'm a bit surprised to report that the first couple uses of my BD AL Momentum has actually been LESS comfortable than the Bod (likely due to less width in leg loops. Gregory Z65 Backpack - 3600-4332cu in

February 9, 2010

Looks like Gregory has released their updated Z-Packs. Anybody know when BC is going to start offering them or what the new updates/improvements will be? From what I can see looks like the zipper pulls will be a bit different which hopefully will be an improvement from the past. I wish they would go to identical to Osprey zipper pulls or the pulls on Marmot soft shells. I know it seems like a minor point and can be replaced, but it's really one of the features you use constantly.

Osprey Packs Atmos 50 Backpack - 2800-3200cu in

December 31, 2009

You can also look into the Atmos 65 which has bottom access through the sleeping bag compartment and as mentioned previously the Gregory z55 or z65 have nice side and front access respectively. I found the Osprey to be more comfortable when loaded in the store and some of the minor components like zipper pulls to be more to my liking on the Osprey as well.

Gregory Z65 Backpack - 3600-4332cu in

December 9, 2009

I have the Atmos 50 but am thinking of switching to either z65 or Atmos 65 for more capacity. I like the idea of side or front access with the z55 and z65 which is not offered on the Atmos (Atmos 65 does have bottom access to sleeping bag/main compartment, but doesn't seem as handy as side/front). Anyone have comments on customer service/reliability issues with Osprey vs Gregory? I also wish the z65 didn't get rid of the front pouch style pocket to stuff things in. Anyone else find this to be nuissance or a non-issue? I Tried all these packs loaded in the store and found the gregory to seem a bit uncomfortable in the shoulders and the nylon zipper extensions seem to be pretty weak compared to Osprey's. This was mentioned to be a problem in another REI review post. Background info: I am looking for max versatility in pack from simple 2-3 day overnighters to extended but light trips in primarily warm climates. Thanks for any thoughts!
