Sportiva Solution: best shoe yet

La Sportiva Solution Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Solution Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 June 4, 2011

I've owned dozens of climbing shoes over the years, and the Solutions are, by far, my favorite. I'm on my third pair currently.

I wish I could give them 9 out of 10 - but I can't give them a perfect score, because they do have a single, significant flaw: the strap. That dang strap, which holds the shoe closed, is just way too flimsy. It always breaks (my friends have all had the same experience). Thankfully, Sportiva is good about fixing the strap for free (just gotta mail it to them). But it's still a blemish on an otherwise perfect shoe.

The Solution is pretty much perfect at doing what it was built for: super-steep climbing, heel-hooking, pulling with your toes, toe-hooking, scumming, etc. The toe is (obviously) very pointed and aggressive, and they edge well because of this. They do not smear well, (and they are obviously not intended to), but the smearing is passable for the needs of most steep climbs.

One final note: I love the heel cup on these shoes. I favor heel-hooks more than the average climber, and these shoes are exceptional at it. However, it's a much different design than pretty much all other shoes out there - it's much bigger/thicker, meaning significantly decreased sensitivity in the heel. The upside is no pain on sideways heel-hooks, and a ridiculous amount of sticky rubber. Works wonders for me, but I've heard complaints from others.

Marmot PreCip Full Zip Pant - Men's

October 29, 2010

Are these pants roomy enough to wear over a pair of jeans? I'm looking for something that will keep me dry on rainy bike rides home from work.

Marmot Minimalist Jacket - Men's

October 14, 2010

It definitely runs big. I'm 6'0", 165 lbs - I originally got a large, which ended up being too big. The medium fit perfectly, still comes down well past my waist, and has plenty of room for a fleece underneath. This jacket in a medium is very comparable to a large Arc'Teryx Beta SL.
