I usually have a perfect fit with Keens when I buy size 8.5, but this time it didn't work out. These are just too short and my big toe hits the end (which ultimately won't 'give' because that is where the rubber reinforcement is). I was too lazy to send them back, though, so I will only wear them when I don't really have to walk much (which pretty much defeats the purpose). So, my advice is buy them a size bigger than usual.........
