Great pack for sidecountry/in-bounds hiking.

Peak Performance R&D Backpack - 15L

Peak Performance R&D Backpack - 15L

Rating for this product: 4 3 days ago

Great pack overall.

First, I will describe the ski carry, because it is unclear from the pictures. The pack has a ski loop that pulls out of the bottom center. It also comes with a ski strap that can be looped through the upper left or right of the pack. This enables diagonal ski carry. It carries pretty well, despite the lack of compression straps. Padded back and waist belt are nice. (I do not understand why so many companies (*cough* black diamond *cough*) put a wimpy little waist belt on their packs, it sucks if you are carrying skis.)

This is clearly a well thought-out design with lots of attention to detail (e.g. the zipper pulls). The clam shell design opens nicely, even when skis are attached. Materials are very burly. Pack is slim and low-profile for riding chairlifts. It's very nice that all straps can be stowed, and the exterior of the pack is very clean -- there's nothing that can get snagged or caught.

Internal dividers/pockets are okay, but not great. They don't do the best job holding my four main bulky items: shovel blade and handle, probe and water bottle.

Not for use in the backcountry.

DAKINE Heli Pro DLX 18L Backpack - Women's - 1100cu in

DAKINE Heli Pro DLX 18L Backpack - Women's - 1100cu in

Rating for this product: 1 November 20, 2011

I bought this for my girlfriend for sidecountry and short backcountry excursions.

The shovel pocket is a complete joke. It would not hold my girlfriend's backcountry access shovel (can't remember the model) nor my BD transfer 7. The diameter of "quick draw ice axe sleeve" was too small to hold the shovel handle. Also, there's no internal compartments for avy tools (e.g. a probe). So basically, if you want to carry a reasonably-sized shovel and deploy it rapidly in an emergency situation, don't buy this pack.

Also, I didn't weigh it but I have a hard time believing this thing is less than 3 lbs. It's extremely heavy for such a small pack.

This will be returned.

NOT Alpaca

Powderhorn Longhorn Pant - Men's

Powderhorn Longhorn Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 November 3, 2008

These are actually 50% cotton, 36% polyester and only 14% alpaca. That's right, cotton -- a material which doesn't wick moisture, chafes, and doesn't insulate when wet. Completely lame.

great socks, great price

Backcountry.com Merino Trail Sock - 3 Pair

Backcountry.com Merino Trail Sock - 3 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 October 6, 2008

Spent a bunch of time hiking in these socks -- no complaints, no regrets. The cushion on the bottom is nice, as is the thinner material on top, and the cuff is just right to cover the ankle. And you can't argue with the price, or at least the sale price.

Excellent for hiking

Chaco Canyonland Low Hiking Shoe - Men's

Chaco Canyonland Low Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 6, 2008

First off, I don't like my chaco sandals but I do love these shoes. The fit is great and they are sturdy enough for long day hikes. I disagree with the review that says the sole is too soft. It is noticeably thin -- more like a sneaker, than a hiking boot, but I was not in pain as a result. I should also note that the sole is certainly more rugged and stiff than your average trail runner.

I've worn this in a variety of conditions now, and I love it. Good breathability, solid warmth, good fit. The thumb loops and zippered pocket are nice touches. Lastly, as I'm sure everyone else has noted, the wool does not stink after several wears.

great for skiing

Outdoor Research Mithril Stormshell Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Mithril Stormshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2007

I've been skiing in this jacket a few times in both heavy snow and bitter cold. Overall, it's very weatherproof and breathable, but it's not as windproof as my old hard shell. I'm 5' 11", 170 lbs and got a large -- the fit is great. Plenty of room for layers without being bulky. Also, it looks good, which is nice.

Great ski

Line Prophet 100 Alpine Ski

Line Prophet 100 Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 March 31, 2006

This is a great ski. It’s softer than I expected given the construction. This ski does everything I want from a fat ski: great float, stable platform for landing, lays down a decent edge on anything that's not bulletproof and is maneuverable enough for trees and tight spots. And that's in the 186cm. I'm giving it five stars even though it doesn't blast through heavy crud as well as I'd like (at least in comparison to my Volkl V Explosives).
