Alaska Tough Boot

Salomon Pro Trek 5 LTR GTX Boot - Men's

Salomon Pro Trek 5 LTR GTX Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 5, 2005

I purchased the ProTrek 5 (after an exhaustive search for the discontinued ProTrek 6) with some misgivings (I wanted a boot that went higher on the ankle). However, after three weeks in Alaska, from hiking the White River in the Wrangell Mountains to fishing the Solomon and Pilgrim Rivers on the Seward Peninsula, I can enthusiastically recommend these rugged lightweight boots. My feet were NEVER wet, NEVER cold, and the performance of the soles in shale and scree to glacial moraine was phenomenal. A one week non-hiking break-in period prior to excursions is recommended.

Performed well in Alaska

Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell Ventigaiter - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell Ventigaiter - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 5, 2005

Purchased prior to three week hiking and fishing trip to Alaska. I hiked in glacial moraine, scree, mud, some snow and ice. I crossed numerous streams and small rivers. The product performed well with none of the difficulties with the product as described by other reviewers that I had read prior to purchase. Only observation—if it had a higher vent panel, it would improve the effectiveness of the waterproof area.
