Stomping Grounds:
Rockies, Tropics and Desert, and big crazy cities. -
Bio:
I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row.
I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.
Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets, I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I'm bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.
I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear.
I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number nine and have won the weekend passes. Last summer I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I bat .400. My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me.
I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy.
I once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed several covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down.
I have made extraordinary four course meals using only a mouli and a toaster oven. I breed prizewinning clams. I have won bullfights in San Juan, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis.

Arc'teryx Venta LT Softshell Jacket - Men's
5 days ago
The Arc'teryx Venta LT does not have zips, but the underarm panels are made from a really breathable softshell material (Epsilon fabric). If you insist on pit zips, check out the Venta SV, but it is a bit warmer due to the fleece lining.

Norrøna /29 Gore-Tex Performance Shell Insulated Parka
5 days ago
The Arc'teryx Fission SV would be another option, and if you don't need full on wet weather protection , I have the Arc'teryx Kappa SV (it will shed light rain and snow is no problem). It uses soft face fabric, and isn't restrictive, but still warm and windproof, plus it breathes better than a Gore Proshell, so better comfort range when it's not bitter cold.

Arc'teryx Fission SV Jacket - Men's
The Arc'teryx Fission SV is the warmest. It's got 200gm Primaloft, and the Fission SL has 120gm equivalent. Thermatek is basically Primaloft that has been saturated with water repellent for even more wet weather loft protection. Additionally, the Fission SL has a lighter face fabric, shorter cut and pit zips.

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Women's
October 29, 2009
The Arc'teryx Rampart could be used for snowshoeing as it's got some weather resistance, is breathable, and dries quickly. I think it might be a little less weather resistance than would be ideal for winter sports, and I'd recommend the Gamma LT instead.

Arc'teryx Stingray Pant - Women's
October 29, 2009
The older Stingray pant had a slightly more trim fit, angled zip cover, and less re-inforced insteps. A note, this pant is fully waterproof and has flannel lining, which adds a bit of insulation.

Arc'teryx Blade 15 Backpack - 915cu in
October 29, 2009
The Arc'teryx Blade 15 will fit a 15" lappy nicely, the sleeve is adjustable so you can make it fit exactly, and not have the computer bounce around. I've used mine without a protective sleeve, and the combo of a snug sleeve, smooth nylon and foam padded back and bottom, have kept my rig looking good.

Arc'teryx Sidewinder AR Jacket - Men's

From your description, I'd think the Arc'teryx Sidewinder in a large would be the way to go, unless he likes a really baggy fit. These are cut to accommodate layers, so you typically don't need to size up.

Arc'teryx Solo Insulated Jacket - Men's
October 28, 2009
This Arc'teryx Solo would be OK for cold winters, but as a stand alone jacket, I'd suggest looking at the Kappa SV which has a bit thicker insulation, and Windstopper in the face fabric and a hood, but is in between thickness of the Dually and Solo.

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's
October 26, 2009
For layering under the Arc'teryx Theta AR, my first choices would be the Hercules jacket or the Atom LT Jacket, they both layer better than a Venta AR , but still work well as stand-alone jackets for mild weather (Hercules blocks about 50% of wind and has good water beading, Atom is basically windproof and really compressible)Other good options- Tau Jacket or pullover.

Arc'teryx Solo Insulated Jacket - Men's
October 26, 2009
The Arc'teryx Solo does have a DWR on the face fabric. Therma-Tek, which is used in this and the Dually, is basically Primaloft that Arc'teryx saturates with DWR, so it's incredibly water resistant both inside and out. You are correct that the 2.7oz Thermatek is equivalent to 133gm Primaloft. The Solo is basically wind-proof due to a very tight face fabric. Compared to the Kappa, the Solo is lighter and more compressible. I prefer the Solo, plus the black with gold logo looks really tough!

Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket - Women's
October 23, 2009
This is a shell jacket and as such, doesn't have insulation. It's great with a fleece (Delta SV is super warm and low bulk). If you want a more insulated version, check the Arc'teryx Scarabee, Venta SV, or Easyrider. Ideal warm coat is the Kappa SV or Fission SV, but the trade-off for super warm, is that they are more bulky; still super comfy though. The Arc'teryx patterning tends to move well, so a puffy doesn't feel restrictive.

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Jacket - Men's
October 23, 2009
The Arc'teryx Gamma LT jacket doesn't have a liner per se, but it uses a plated fabric, which uses nylon and polyester threads. The weaving technique used puts the nylon on the outside (for durability and weather resistance) and the polyester inside
(for moisture management and softness). It makes it a cool piece because it has multiple performing fabrics in a light, stretchy textile. great jacket for the money!

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Jacket - Men's
October 23, 2009
See the comp for the Accelero to complete these answers. Comparing the Gamma LT pullover to the Gamma LT jacket. These use different fabrics, with the Gamma LT PO being a single layer of stretch woven fabric and the Gamma LT jacket a "plated" fabric using nylon on the face and polyester inside-this is a really cool fabric that is a single layer, but with different threads. Nylon-durable; Polyester-moisture management. So, the PO is lighter, and more stretchy, and a tiny bit more breathable (minor difference) Gamma LT jacket is really tough, still breathes really well, and sheds weather, but is a bit bigger if it's rolled up in your pack. Hope these help!

I've got one of each, and I wear the Gamma for ski touring and climbing, and the Accelero for running, cycling and as a light mid-layer. Accelero is better at moisture management.

Arc'teryx Stingray Pant - Women's
October 20, 2009
For colder days, the Rho AR bottom (reg length or boot cut) is the ultimate. It's got a smooth face fabric so it won't bind against the fleece in your Stingray pants; for warmer days, I'd go with the Rho LT or LTW (merino wool). And for the really bitter days, wear both and you'll be out all day.

This is it! The Arc'teryx Theta SV is made using Gore ProShell with Arc'teryx construction and face fabric. For perspective, the Theta SV is designed and built in Vancouver, BC, which has an annual rainfall total of 44"- that's a lot of all-day rain. The other great quality of this jacket is that it will maintain it's performance for years if you keep it clean and follow the care instructions.

The fit of the Arc'teryx Alpha jackets compared to the Beta AR: Both styles are fairly trim fits (about the same as the Beta), but not so much as to feel tight. The Alpha Jackets are about 1.5 inches longer on the bottom hem. The Alpha Jackets are both a bit lighter because of the face fabric, with the Alpha LT being the more durable/breathable of the two, due to the use of Gore Pro-Shell vs. Paclight.

Hey Jeff, You could go with either size in the Arc'teryx Delta LT, depending on how you like it to fit. As a layer under your Sidewinder, I'd go Lge, if you'd like a looser, more sweatshirt type fit, and XL would work but maybe be a bit long in the sleeves. I'm 6'175# and wear Med in this one.

Arc'teryx Delta SV Jacket - Women's
October 19, 2009
The Delta SV is not wind-resistant. This jacket excels at insulating under a shell without being bulky or stiff. For wind-resistant insulation, my favorite is the Arc'teryx Hercules; it's got a high-loft fleece inside and Powershield 02 face fabric (this blocks about 60% of wind, light moisture and slides nicely under shells without being stiff like windstopper fleece) It's really comfortable and versatile. The Delta SV is a super insulator, but not as versatile to wear by itself. Another wind-resistant fleece is the Accomplice, but only about half as warm as these two.Hope that helps!

October 19, 2009
There are a couple versions of Power Stretch, and it's not obvious who's using which one. The better version has a higher nylon content which helps it hold up for longer. Arc'teryx uses the higher quality version of this fabric, and this, in combination with the fit and construction, are what separate the Arc'teryx Power Stretch pieces, like the Rho AR, from power stretch from other brands.

Both the GPS pod and Foot pod can be calibrated, to increase accuracy (I've got mine to about 98% accurate)Just do 4 laps on a track (or other known distance)then adjust the mileage on the watch. Arc'teryx Miura 50 Backpack - 2746-3356cu in
October 19, 2009
To compare the Arc'teryx Miura 50 and Silo 40. These two packs are designed for different purposes, but both work across a wide variety of uses. The Miura is built to carry a heavier load, with a slightly more padded hipbelt, and foam-lined bottom, and sides (to help protect the fabric and the gear inside)I like the Miura's loading options (top or panel). The Silo is lighter and carries skis and snowboards better because of the wrap system. The Silo is also a bit more streamlined in shape and has more organization options. If you're using it more as a climbing pack- Miura, for winter sports- Silo. Both are pretty sweet, though, and can be used year-round.

Compared to the Arc'teryx Beta AR, I see a few differences. The Beta AR is made from Gore Pro-Shell, these are made with Performance, which is a less breathable/durable Gore product. Arc'teryx Beta AR pants also use full length side zips for max ventilation and putting on over boots. Kevlar insteps patches on the Beta AR add huge durability. Lastly, and this may answer your last question. 5 year warranty on the Norrona; Lifetime warranty on the Beta AR.

Arc'teryx Khamsin 50 Backpack - 2746-3356cu in
October 18, 2009
The Arc'teryx Khamsin 50 can be lightened up a touch by removing the stays, and back panel foam (I'd say fit precedes weight, in that a good carrying pack lightens the overall load feel). For 3 day climbs, if you pack right, a 50 liter should be plenty (I did a 3 day Grand Teton ascent with a 45L Arc'teryx Naos; and that included 3 liter of Cabernet)For day trips, this pack can be compressed from the sides, removing the lid, and by closing down the front pocket. So, No.
You do have another good option in the Khazri 55- 5oz lighter, 5 liters bigger, and still compressible; the trade off is features and harness plush.

Arc'teryx Accelero Pullover Top - Women's
October 17, 2009
the Arc'teryx Accelero isn't waterproof, so it won't keep you dry when it is raining. It will shed a light drizzle, but it's really built to block some wind and wick moisture off your skin or baselayer.A good jacket to inspect for a combination of water resistance (if you buy a waterproof jacket for Extreme Power Walking you'll end up soaked from sweat, as truly waterproof jackets can't keep up with really high output sweating) is the Arc'teryx Venta LT. The Venta LT is made with windstopper, which is highly water resistant, but with a highly breathable material under the arms for excellent breathe-ability and moisture transfer. I'd recommend the Gamma LT pants for water-resistant, or the Alpha LT for waterproof pants (make sure the pants have vents if you're getting extreme)

October 17, 2009
The Arc'teryx Beta AR (as well as all Arc'teryx Gore Pro-Shell) is made with 3-layer construction- to clarify- any Pro-Shell piece only uses one layer of Gore-Tex; the other layers are the face fabric and woven backer. 2-layer construction does away with the woven backer, and typically uses a hung nylon or mesh liner. Arc'teryx uses 3-layer construction exclusively because it is typically more durable, less bulky and easier to layer. Additionally, the backer won't soak up excess moisture like a liner can.

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

I've been wearing the Medium (5'11,170) and it fits close enough to layer under shells, but loose enough to be comfy. If you want a more casual fit the Lge would also work.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Softshell Pant - Men's
October 16, 2009
Goaty, the Arc'teryx Gamma MX pants don't have an internal gaiter, but do have reinforced instep, and a cinch on the bottom cuff. These work really well to keep the bottom hem in place through snow, and lots of dynamic movement. Killer pant!

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 16, 2009
The Arc'teryx Gamma MX has a bit more length than the Sigma AR(I want to say about 1.5 inches)The large in this jacket will fit you really well, and it's a good deal more breathable, stretchy, and lighter than the Sigma. Enjoy!

Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket - Men's
October 16, 2009
on the surface, these two jackets look very similar. The Arc'teryx Beta SL has a drop hood, which leaves the collar in place, and the hood out of the way, when it's not on your head. I'd say the main differences would be the super high quality of Arc'teryx construction, and a more durable face fabric. Plus, and this is just personal preference, the Beta SL has more interesting colors.

Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV Jacket - Women's

The Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV does not have a stow hood, but the Sidewinder AR does. I think the 3 positions, may have been a reference to the adjustability, 2 peripheral, 1 head circumference.

Arc'teryx Sentry Jacket - Men's
October 16, 2009
From what I can see, it looks like these three jackets stack up like this on the warmth scale- Koven, Sentry, then Hoback. The Arc'teryx Sentry has a couple details to consider. Highest quality face fabric and Gore Pro-Shell (this will keep the jacket performing longer than any other waterproof/breathable membrane)Primaloft is 130gm, whereas the Hoback is 100gm. I found the Sentry to be a great warmth level for a wide variety of conditions; I've skied in 700 fill down jackets, and I'm always too hot, unless I'm standing around, not skiing (which is why I wear slightly less insulated jackets now; not too much standing around) If you want the absolute highest level of protection and warmth, check the Arc'teryx Fission SV.

Arc'teryx Stinger Jacket - Men's
October 16, 2009
The Arc'teryx Stinger doesn't use a zip-in liner (none of the Arc'teryx jackets do)because it creates a stiff panel down the middle of your chest, as well as a potential cold spot where your insulating layer gaps. I'd suggest wearing a separate insulating layer(I like the Tau pullover or the new Atom jacket)which also gives more options for fine tuning your warmth.

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's
October 8, 2009
The Arc'teryx Alpha LT has a lot of buzz for a couple reasons. The fit and finish on Arc'teryx is unmatched. Super tiny seams, no external stitching, and no rough edges on the seam tape make for excellent fit and great durability in a lightweight jacket. Also, the face fabric is of higher grade than any other coat; it uses tiny threads, that are tightly woven for a smooth hand but high abrasion resistance, this also helps hold the DWR finish much longer. The similarities on paper will quickly fade when you pull on the Alpha LT.

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's
October 8, 2009
The Arc'teryx Alpha SV is a superb all-year jacket. The breathability difference between the AR and LT version is minimal, and almost un-noticeable. For a jacket you want to use hard for years, the Alpha SV can't be beat.

Arc'teryx Silo 18 Backpack - 1098cu in
October 8, 2009
The Arc'teryx Silo 18 will fit a tall torso better than the Miura 20 due to strap and frame design. It's still a bit of a stretch for the Silo 18 to fit a 6'3" frame correctly. That being said, the Arc'teryx Silo 30 comes in torso lengths, so a tall size in that pack would be the best fit, and can be compressed for small loads. I've got a couple tall buddies who use the Silo 30 and love it.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 8, 2009
The Arc'teryx Gamma SV compared to the Venta SV: Gamma SV-more breathable, higher level of insulation due to high loft fleece inside, less wind-resistant (still blocks about 90%) a touch more stretch, less water resistant, but still can be out in a snowstorm for hours and keep you dry.
Venta SV: less breathable due to Windstopper membrane (still moves excess heat, and has pit-zips)higher weather protection due to membrane, taped seams (nearly waterproof, except in a protracted downpour. These two are pretty close performance wise. If you want a softshell for medium output activity, with a high level of weather protection, that will be used primarily as an outer layer the Venta SV can't be beat. Gamma SV excels in slightly higher output activities, and as a really warm layer under a water proof shell.

Arc'teryx Sentry Jacket - Men's
October 8, 2009
The Arc'teryx Sentry is the most similar to the old Patriot. The Sentry uses a bit less insulation (130 gm compared to 200gm in Patriot) Also, has an even better face fabric, and uses Gore-Tex Pro Shell, so better breathablilty, durability, and drape. Additional, Arc'teryx added the roll-away hood, a better powder skirt, and pit-zips.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Women's
October 7, 2009
What you should look at if you want the slimmest, most packable Arc'teryx jacket, in Gore Pro-Shell, is the Alpha LT or Beta LT. This Beta AR will be a bit lighter than an Alpha SV because it uses less of the super tough fabric and has a slightly shorter cut. The LT versions are significantly lighter, more packable and have a softer feel. For reference on the Arc'teryx naming scheme: SV-severe, AR-all 'round, LT-light. Don't worry though, they are still sized for layering, tough, technical and equally well built.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's
October 5, 2009
Here's the company line from the Arc'teryx Head of Softgoods Design:
"This is a highly debated area with more spin than a your average roller derby.
We have generally tried to stay clear of these numbers because our cumulative years in the field has taught us that true performance/comfort in waterproof breathable fabrics comes from a synergy of many different elements:
· Face fabric.
· DWR.
· Membrane/Evaporative resistance.
· Resistance to oil and other contaminants.
· Internal moisture dispersion/ backer.
· Garment design, fit and construction.
and the longevity of each of these elements.
For those driven by figures: all our Gore-tex fabrics have a Hydrostatic head of at least 28 000mm which equates to 40PSI.
Gore prefers to use as RET values as they, like many, believe that it gives a better correlation to human comfort than Mvtr.
Our Values here are all lower than 6 but I do not have a specific number for each fabric. RET values are affected by the weight and density of face and backer fabrics. The Pro-shell range of fabrics spans RET values from 4 to 6. (lower is better) I believe eVent claims an RET of 4.5, but this figure must change with each individual fabric combination.
Best figures that Ive been able to dig up is Gore 28 000 Hydrostatic head 17 000 MVTR again the inverted cup method used to measure MVTR has very little correlation to human comfort."
With that being said, I've seen a few tests comparing eVent to Gore Pro-shell. Initially the eVent does breathe better, but since it lacks the oleophobic (oil hating) membrane of Gore-Tex, the eVent membrane tends go get clogged quickly, which in a short time, greatly reduces it breathability. Arc'teryx has tested every WP/B membrane out there, and still uses only Gore Tex Pro-shell and Paclite, because it maintains the highest level of performance for the longest amount of time. The more important consideration in buying a jacket is Design, Construction, Materials. Both Gore and eVent make great products, it's what the manufacturers do with those membranes that count.
whew, that's a mouthful

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 4, 2009
For the Arc'teryx Windstopper jackets (Venta SV and AR) the seams are "finish taped" this means they have more weather resistance than an untaped seam (not totally waterproof by Gore standards, but will keep leaks out in all but heavy rain, great for snow). This finish taping allows using narrower seams and eliminating exposed stitching on the outside of the jacket for better durability.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 4, 2009
I can speak to the Arc'teryx question. For comparison, the Venta AR. The face fabric used by Arc'teryx are chosen for their durability, and performance. The face of a Venta AR has a smooth, tight weave, and just a bit of stretch. Construction is superior: no exposed stitching, and super narrow, internally taped seams for better durability and fit. The extra cost of an Arc'teryx jacket will more than justify itself over the life of the piece. Longer lasting, but also, better performance every day.

Arc'teryx Solo Insulated Jacket - Men's
October 4, 2009
The Arc'teryx Solo has a water resistant shell, and insulation, but as a stand-alone jacket for moto, you'd be better served to check out the Fission SL, AR or SV, because they have a Gore-tex Proshell face fabric, and are totally water/wind proof. For pants, the Titan is the warmest waterproof pant, but I'd probably look at a shell/fleece pant combo. Beta AR or LT would be good options- lightweight and packable, trimmer fit, and easy to get on over boots.

The Arc'teryx Arrakis 40 carries avy gear quite well. Shovels, skins and avy kit will all fit in the front pocket (yes, you need to break it down). There are wand pockets internally for probe and handle. The Silo 40 is also a good option, but doesn't have the waterproof fabric or the super nice suspension that is featured on the Arrakis.

Arc'teryx Theta SV Bib - Men's
October 1, 2009
The real difference between the Arc'teryx Stinger Bib and Theta SV: fit; Stinger have a fuller cut in the legs. Features; Stinger has thigh pockets, and thigh vents, as opposed to full length zips on the Theta SV. Both use the stretch-woven back panel that breathes well, but still sheds show- it's the same fabric used in the Gamma MX, but with a slightly lighter fleece backing.

October 1, 2009
The Arc'teryx Griffon is more of a slim fit, as it's designed to be layered, but also works great as an outer layer in mild weather. Blocks about 50% of wind, sheds light moisture, and breathes really well. Also, the face fabric is smooth, so it doesn't bind under shell jackets. Versatile, tough, and comfortable.

Arc'teryx Scorpion Jacket - Women's
October 1, 2009
The Arc'teryx Scorpion is about mid-hip length, and, like all Arc'teryx jackets, the arms are long enough to keep cuffs in place through a full range of motion. Arc'teryx also uses gussets under the arms to compliment the sleeve length, keep underarm bulk to a minimum (laminated zips also help this), and keep the hem down where it belongs. Enjoy!

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's
September 30, 2009
for the Arc'teryx Alpha LT hood, the pros of the storm hood (no separate collar) better coverage on your face, especially when the hood is up. It really seals up, and you can tuck in really deep when the wind and snow are howling. if you wear it in milder weather, the front part doesn't lay as flat as a collared version. The Arc'teryx Beta LT is the alternate version of this jacket with a collar and roll-hood,if you prefer that style.
