  • Stomping Grounds:

Rockies, Tropics and Desert, and big crazy cities.
  • Bio:

I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row.

I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets, I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I'm bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.

I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear.

I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number nine and have won the weekend passes. Last summer I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I bat .400. My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me.

I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy.

I once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed several covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down.

I have made extraordinary four course meals using only a mouli and a toaster oven. I breed prizewinning clams. I have won bullfights in San Juan, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis.

Suunto t3c Heart Rate Monitor with Comfort Belt

This could be a couple things- one thing to check is your "activity level" in the 'personal' menu. If you have it set too high it will calculate your calories down. The other possibility is the HR belt isn't reading accurately either because it doesn't have good contact with you, or the battery could be running low.If you check these things and still feel like it isn't accurate, call Suunto Help desk-number is on Suunto.com

Arc'teryx Delta SV Fleece Jacket - Women's

I feel like the bad reviews are from those who don't understand what this fleece is designed for: layering under a shell. Hence the lightweight and close fit. As for Flimsy, this fabric holds up better than any other high loft fleece out there. If you're looking for a super-breathable, yet very insulating under layer, this is about as good as it gets. Your lady would fit a small just right.

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Men's

The Rampart fabric is fairly tough, and dries quickly. If you really want a tough pair of pants, a stretch woven (like the Gamma LT) would be perfect for caving- tough, stretchy and still quick drying. Almost any lightweight nylon pair of pants is going to take a beating if you're crawling around underground, but the softshell pants should hold up nicely.

Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket - Men's

I like the packability of this jacket, but for riding, and paddling you'd be better served by the longer hemmed, and pit-zip version, the Alpha SL. The Paclite is good for it's small size, and total waterproofness. If you really want the ultimate in lightweight weatherproof jackets, the Alpha LT is it. Only slightly heavier than the SL, but way more durable and breathable. Of course, it's way more expensive, too.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Women's

jat120 has pretty much got it right here. Fit wise, the Gamma MX will actually have room for a light layer under it. Hercules is cut as a layering jacket that has good some outerwear protection, and you won't get much more than a heavy baselayer under it. The Gamma MX is more water repellant due to a tighter face fabric weave, which is the same reason the Hercules breathes better. I'd boil it down this way: if you're looking for a super comfy, yet tough, jacket that will primarily be worn as outerwear while you're active-Gamma MX. For a jacket that has medium level protection from the elements, but is super soft and really warm under a shell;Hercules.

Arc'teryx Delta SV Fleece Jacket - Men's

I wouldn't recommend layering the Delta SV under a Hercules because the high loft fuzz on both jackets tend to bind up a bit. If you need more insulation, try an insulated windstopper over your Hercules. That is the intended design for the Hercules; soft-shell/layering. The Kappa SV is a good option for light, weather resistant insulation and protection.

Arc'teryx Kappa AR Insulated Jacket - Men's

Bomber! The Kappa will be super warm under a Theta AR- hope it's cold where you ski, because it would be too warm for some days in Utah, under a shell. I like to ski with this as a stand alone jacket. The cut of the Theta AR will accommodate the Kappa AR well.

Arc'teryx Scarab Jacket - Men's

The Arc'teryx Scarab is a more insulated version of the Stingray- higher loft fleece is laminated inside. If you're looking for a jacket for X-Country skiing, backpacking and Alpine Skiing I would recommend a Pro-shell jacket (Alpha SV, Theta AR, or Stinger), instead of Gore Soft shell. The proshell is more breathable, lighter and more packable. That being said, if you don't mind a bit of weight, it is a really sweet jacket.

I'm 5'11/175, and I wear a Large. Most Arc'teryx gear I wear in a Medium, but this is a pretty casual fleece, so I got it a bit loose. You would fit a large just fine, but if you prefer a casual fit, go up one size.

Arc'teryx Khazri 55 Backpack – 3051-3661cu in

Either the Arc'teryx Khazri or Khamsin packs work for all types of climbing. The Khamsin has more features (crampon pocket, more plush hipbelt). The Khazri is lighter per volume. One difference from the BD pack is this one has cross-stays, that keep the lightweight frame from bowing when it's fully loaded. Plus, the standard Arc'teryx construction- more stitches per inch, better fabric, and a "V" shape for the stays, to mirror the shape of your back.

Wash all your tech gear as such- and regularly! Use a non-detergent (granger's, nikwax) tech wash, use an extra rinse, and put it in the dryer for about 20-30 min on med (this helps re-charge the DWR). High quality fleece can handle a lot of washings, and your buddies can't handle you not.

If you like a trim fit, and don't need thick fleece under, you can wear a Small in the Alpha SV, and still have room for layers. I'm 5'11,175 and a Medium fits me perfectly. Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Men's

November 30, 2009

For any Arc'teryx (and most other brands) performance fabrics, wash it warm with a tech-wash (non-detergent). A double rinse will assure there is no residue left, which will degrade the DWR. Dry it on medium heat for 20-30 mins. This will help re-charge the DWR. If you need to re-treat it for water repellency, use a spray-on re-proof and let it air dry for about 10 mins. (Arc recommends Grangers) before you put it in the dryer). If you clean your gear regularly, so as not to let oil and dirt build up, you won't need to re-treat it for a few seasons and it will maintain it's best breathability.
One detail to consider, Arc'teryx has introduced a new version of the Gamma MX which is more water resistant, dries more quickly, and has a bit softer, but equally tough, face fabric.

Arc'teryx Sentry Jacket - Men's

November 28, 2009

A couple details to consider. The Sentry uses Arc'teryx lamination to install the insulation. This does away with cold spots, helps the loft to last longer, and keeps the michelin man look away. Also, attention to detail, i.e. no exposed stitching, waterproof cuffs, and really durable face fabric that isn't boardy, make for a jacket that will last; and perform better on a daily basis. Design, materials, and construction are what make Arc'teryx distinctive from others.

Arc'teryx Hercules Hooded Fleece Jacket - Men's

November 25, 2009

I've got both the Arc'teryx Atom and the Hercules Hoody. I find it depends a bit on the weather, which one is warmer. If there's no wind or moisture involved, the Hercules feels a bit warmer. When the wind kicks up, and your not concerned about overheating, the Atom gives more protection, and hence, is warmer. This is a bit of splitting hairs, because the insulation value of the two is very similar. What separates them is breathability (Hercules is better), abrasion resistance (Hercules)and packability (Atom). For shedding moisture and wind, the Atom has got it, but just by a bit- I know, not easy!!!

Arc'teryx Griffon Jacket - Men's

November 19, 2009

Craine, the Arc'teryx Griffon is an ideal layering piece, more so than the sigma LT- better breathability, more pliable fabric so it doesn't feel constrictive, and still a good stand alone for mild weather. Blocks about half the wind-not windproof like the windstopper jackets, and has a good DWR so it will shed snow and light rain.

Arc'teryx Fury SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 17, 2009

I'm not super familiar with the genesis, but I've used the Arc'teryx Fury SV a bunch- it was my main ski jacket last season. The Fury is made with Windstopper and has taped seams, so I never had any leaking, even in Utah spring snowstorms. It also breathes well, and has a good measure of stretch. Not sure what the membrane Marmot is using, but the WP/breathe specs on that say "not specified" which, to me, means "not very". Also, I asked an Arc'teryx designer why they don't do welded seams, and the response was because it leaves a lip that gets caught and can damage the seam. Arc is using a lo-profile seam that hides the threads, and makes a very flat, clean seam. Plus, I think the Arc'teryx fit tends to be accurate and not boxy. I still love my Fury after 50-ish ski days, resort, hiking, and backcountry.

Arc'teryx S240 Sport Climbing Harness

November 17, 2009

The Arc'teryx S240 would work as a trad harness, but the Arc'teryx R320 is better suited with 4 racking loops, and a rear haul loop for tag lines. I find the 2 loops don't carry enough gear unless you're running it out, or take a sling along. Both styles pack down really small.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 17, 2009

The difference between the new and old Arc'teryx Gamma MX is mainly in the face fabric. They are equally warm (same liner fleece thickness), and wind resistant (blocks about 90%). The current Gamma MX Hoody is a touch lighter, and dries more quickly, if it does get wet.

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 17, 2009

You can compare warmth by checking the weight of insulation. The Arc'teryx Atom is designed to work as a mid-layer, as well as a light, stand-alone jacket. It's got stretch panels fleece under the arm to reduce bulk, and add some breathability. This compliments the fairly close fit, so as not to be constricting. I wear a medium in this, just like I do in nearly every other Arc'teryx item.

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pullover Jacket - Women's

November 16, 2009

The Arc'teryx Alpha SL could be used as a ski jacket. It will keep you dry and block the wind. If you'll be skiing a lot of days, you may want a jacket with a more durable fabric. This Gore Paclite is designed for maximum pack-ability, and trades super tough face fabric, and inside backer material, to accomplish this. I've used mine as a compliment to a softshell for an added layer in really harsh conditions, but for skiing resort days, I'd recommend the Beta AR, Sidewinder, or Stingray from Arc'teryx.

Arc'teryx Zeta Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 16, 2009

The Arc'teryx Zeta has a slightly different polyester face from the Epsilon. The difference is the Zeta has a bit more water resistance, but it is quite a bit softer than the Epsilon; almost has a silky texture. Size on these two is very similar, not as close fitting at the Gamma MX (or as much stretch)

Arc'teryx Sidewinder AR Jacket - Men's

November 16, 2009

The Arc'teryx Sidewinder would probably be a bit baggy on you in a Large, which is the size that would work best for sleeve length. You may want to take a look at the Stinger, which is cut a bit more trim, still has a roll hood, but a taller, fleece lined collar, and straight zip.

Arc'teryx Motive Polo Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

I've got a few collared shirts for those rare formal occasions. After I got the Arc'teryx Motive Polo, I actually started wearing it, for everyday. It's a really soft blend of cotton and poly which keeps if from looking wrinkled like an all cotton shirt would, and it's really comfortable because of the touch of stretch. I even got some compliments for looking nice! I guess I'll get a black one, too, and the Woodsmoke color looks great.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

This is not a softshell like the stingray is. It is similar to the goretex shells like the sidewinder in feel and "noise" but it is just a windbreaker. It will breathe a bit better than the sidewinder, similar to the Stingray softshell material and the seams are not sealed. The warmth will be similar to the stingray too since it does have a light liner.Compared to the Stingray, a bit lighter, more breathable, equally wind resistant, and not as water resistant if rain or wet snow is involved. Dry snow, you'll stay equally dry. It actually does have sealed seams, but they aren't certified as waterproof because Gore-Tex doesn't allow that on a Windstopper item. it is much quieter than a Sidewinder as far as fabric goes, and also more stretchy than any of the Gore'tex jackets, like Stingray or Sidewinder.BTW, the Sidewinder is more breathable than the Stingray because of the Laminate and the fleece liner in the stingray.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

The face fabric is a bit smoother on the Venta, and it has internal seams, so no exposed thread. It does have a bit more stretch than the Sigma, but not as much as the Gamma, which is why it may feel less roomy, they are actually cut almost exactly the same.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

Aah, describing color, that's always easy. The Copper color in the Arc'teryx Venta SV here is pretty accurate, the Aztec looks a bit washed out. One other consideration, the Copper is the new version. You get smoother face fabric (no rip stop, but still super tough) much cleaner seams (no top-stitch, seam taped inside, less snagging)and a bit more stretch. Go Copper...

Arc'teryx Stinger Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

The Arc'teryx Stinger doesn't use a zip-in liner (none of the Arc'teryx jackets do)because it creates a stiff panel down the middle of your chest, as well as a potential cold spot where your insulating layer gaps. I'd suggest wearing a separate insulating layer(I like the Tau pullover or the new Atom jacket)which also gives more options for fine tuning your warmth.

Tau of Wasatch

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

I've lost count of days that I've worn my Arc'teryx Tau Pullover, but it's now 3 years old and I'm sure it's been worn over 100 days (each year). Climbing-smooth face bounces off, instead of snagging on, rocks. Skiing-layers nice without bunching because of the smooth face, and it also sheds light snow (and light beer, I live in UT) while hiking. Daily wear-blocks a bit of wind, which is great for spring and fall. And, it still looks great, sure it's got a hole or two from flying embers, but no pilling or wear spots. This is way more than a fleece pullover.

Arc'teryx Theta SV Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

The Arc'teryx Theta SV would pair really well with a Hercules. In fact, the Hercules is designed to work as an outer layer for moderate conditions, and under a Gore Hard shell for heavy conditions. I find the fit of both the Gamma MX and Hercules work well as layers (the Hercules isn't too relaxed) but prefer the Hercules as a layering piece.

The other great quality of this jacket is that it will maintain it's performance for years if you keep it clean and follow the care instructions.

Arc'teryx Stinger Bib - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

I'm a big fan of light shell pants, but they usually blow up after a season (if I'm lucky) After wearing the Arc'teryx Stinger bib for two full seasons, I've finally found some winners. Super tough outer fabric, and insteps, not to tight in the legs, and the short bib design, with breathable back panel, keeps moisture, whether from me or the storm, out of my crack. The thigh pockets are great for hats, gloves and other necessities, but not all floppy like some fratboy cargos. Looking forward to another 60 days on these, 'cause they're still barely scratched.

Arc'teryx Scorpion Pant - Women's

Arc'teryx Scorpion Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

The Arc'teryx Scorpion pant is made with Gore-Tex Softshell, and as such, are completely water-proof and breathable, not water resistant like it says here. In addition, the high-loft fleece inside adds insulation, without being bulky and "puffy" looking. I've got the men's version, and they will keep you dry in the worst snowstorms, and I usually wear a thin baselayer, or add light fleece pants, if it's really cold.

Arc'teryx Solo Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

My Arc'teryx Solo hits just below the waist on my pants, so I consider it to be a short jacket. It's designed to work as a layer, so the length is cut this way so as not to hang out from your shell. One consideration in comparing; the Therma-Tek is an Arc'teryx exclusive fabric- water-repellent treated Primaloft. It's basically waterproof in that it will not absorb moisture, and the loft is extra resilient due to this treatment.

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2009

I just got the Arc'teryx Strato, and it is made from a fleece like none other. It's got a cool texture that looks like a knit sweater crossed with a fleece. The Strato fits a bit closer than my Covert, and hence, layers better. Also, the stretchy cuffs are really low-profile so it's not bulky on the wrist when it's under my shell. The fabric seems like it will maintain it's smooth appearance because it's a really tight weave. Pretty classic looking, and you don't look like an outdork when you wear it around town. I'm actually surprised it only costs a bit more than the old TNF Denali, cause it's way nicer.

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

November 13, 2009

The extra cost of the Arc'teryx Alpha SV is due to the face fabric. The SV uses a super durable face fabric that holds up to a ridiculous amount of abuse. The Alpha LT uses a lighter face fabric, that, while not as tough as the SV, is more durable than any other jacket for the weight. Buy the one that will fit your needs- if you're planning on wearing it daily, for years, go SV. I have the LT because I usually wear softshell jackets, and only pull out the gore-tex when it's really nasty.
