  • Stomping Grounds:

Rockies, Tropics and Desert, and big crazy cities.
  • Bio:

I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row.

I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets, I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I'm bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.

I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear.

I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number nine and have won the weekend passes. Last summer I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I bat .400. My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me.

I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy.

I once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed several covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down.

I have made extraordinary four course meals using only a mouli and a toaster oven. I breed prizewinning clams. I have won bullfights in San Juan, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis.

Arc'teryx Sabre SV Jacket - Men's

February 3, 2012

Sounds like a Pro-shell jacket would suit you better. Pro-shell tends to be more packable, breathable and durable. Softshell is warmer, softer and more quiet. Take a look at the Arc'teryx Rush (similar to the Sabre SV, but in pro-shell, and with more pockets) the Alpha SV-maximum toughness or the Beta AR for a super versatile jacket for all seasons.

Arc'teryx Kappa Insulated Pant - Men's

February 3, 2012

Here's why clothing temp ranges are mostly bunk- it depends on too many factors-humidity, activity level, pain tolerance. That being said, these Kappa pants are pretty warm. I'd say if you're sitting around they'd be warm to about 10-20F. If you layer them up, or are moving, they'll keep you warm to lower temps. Pretty vague, I know, but hopefully gives you some idea.

Arc'teryx Micon Pant - Men's

February 3, 2012

Hmm, I have to say, the Micon (Sabre) fits larger both in waist and girth, than the Beta AR. I'm a 32" waist and have the Micon in Med (which I love-worked great at Snowbird today) and I need a belt to keep them locked in place. I'd say if you're bigger than 33" waist go large, otherwise, med will work better. They have a pretty sweet waist adjustment on the inside waistband which can adjust the waist almost 2" for layers or guts.

Arc'teryx Alpha FL Jacket - Men's

January 31, 2012

There are a couple differences in performance. As Dave stated there is a weight difference. A couple other considerations- The Alpha FL is more breathable and packable than the Alpha LT, but the tradeoff is that the Alpha LT is significantly more durable, both in face fabric and backer.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 31, 2012

To detail Dean's answer which is spot on. You can and should wash all your tech jackets like this: Use a Tech wash like grangers or nikwax, not regular detergent, and use the extra rinse setting. A warm dryer for 20 minutes will help revive the DWR treatment, and you can use a spray-on (not wash in) treatment if you feel the orignal DWR treatment is diminished. Spray this on after washing, let it dry for a few minutes and pop it in the dryer on med heat for 20 minutes.

You could try the Arc'teryx Stingray pant, it's a bit more trim, more of a traditional Arc'teryx fit, and has waist adjusters built in. Or the Stinger bibs, those are some of my faves, and also come in a short inseam length, which would probably be the ideal fit for your described physique.

Arc'teryx Gamma SV Softshell Pant - Men's

January 10, 2012

The cuff on the Gamma MX will fit tightly over lower profile ski mountaineering boots, but it would be tough to get them over a standard Alpine boot. You may want to check the Gamma SK, which offers similar weather protection, a bit more breathability and a larger cuff that will easily fit over any ski boot and offers a mini-gaiter.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 10, 2012

Don't have a large here for cuff size, but it fit's pretty close to the wrist. I can put a light glove under the cuff, but not a really warm one; that would have to go over the top which works well because the jacket cuff is trim. There would be room to layer under the Gamma MX, with something that also fits close. I wouldn't recommend the really fuzzy fleece, however, because it tends to bind up on the fleece lining of the Gamma MX. I find the Atom LT to be the ideal layer, and that way you'll still have a bit of protection if you take the Gamma MX off.
Drawcord, yes.

Arc'teryx Ventii Jacket - Men's

January 4, 2012

Hi Paul,
to be honest, I'm not familiar with the Viper. I can say that the Ventii uses a face fabric that stretches with the membrane, so delam shouldn't be an issue. As usual, if there were ever a problem, you've essentially got a double warranty, from Gore and Arc'teryx. That being said, the best thing about the Arc'teryx warranty is that it almost never gets used.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 4, 2012

Hi Levi
I'd say the Gamma MX has a slightly looser fit than the Epsilon, but is still trim. It does have way more stretch and is a bit warmer and more protective while still breathing well. I can fit a baselayer and a light insulator ( I use the Atom LT for cold weather) under my MX and I wear my normal size.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

December 29, 2011

Yes to both questions. The Beta AR is cut to accomodate layer, so check the sizing chart up top. You may be able to go for a Lge which would fit you better in the sleeves and bottom hem. This will work great with a harness, which you can wear over top of the jacket so you have clear access to knots and belay devices as well as a clear view of your feet.

Arc'teryx Arrakis 50 Backpack - 3051-3661cu in

December 29, 2011

The Arrakis is essentially waterproof, so that seems like a huge advantage for a trip like this where you will be constantly exposed to moisture and drying won't be easy. The other difference is the fabric on the Arc'teryx Arrakis is really durable due to the lamination treatment on both faces of the fabric. I also like the pivot hipbelt for skiing as it keeps the pack from swaying.

Arc'teryx Solo Insulated Jacket - Men's

December 14, 2011

This one is warmer and also will be way better at resisting any moisture pickup due to the totally waterproof Thermatek fill. Another consideration is the construction; the Solo has it's insulation laminated to the inner shell so there are no cold spots from baffle stitching, and this also makes it's loft last longer.

The Mako uses a different type of insulation, has a thicker liner material and more pockets. Length is a bit longer on the Mako and it is a looser fit than the FissionSL. Both use really durable face fabrics that are still fairly light. Fission SL in minimal in features, Mako has more pockets, a pow skirt, Recco, etc. and will be warmer than the Fission SL, mainly because of the Coreline lining material. Good luck with the hunt.

Hey Levi, Take a look at the Fission SV or the Khuno. Both of these are warmer and with less ski features that may be in the way if you're wearing it around town. For comparision, the Mako has 100gm Coreloft, the Khuno 140 and seam taped Windstopper, with the longest cut, and the Fission SV, 200gm and GoreTex proshell.

Arc'teryx Dually Belay Insulated Parka - Men's

December 6, 2011

One thing to consider with the Dually that is unique among insulator jackets is that the synthetic fill is actually waterproof, so for wet and humid weather, this will be the most efficient of any jacket, down or synthetic. A sub-benefit of using this type of fill (Thermatek is basically waterproof treated Primaloft) is the treatment and the way it is laminated in place, adds life to the loft over seasons of use. The laminated fill also leaves the face fabric smooth (as in, not covered in baffle stitch lines) so it bounces weather and abuse better.

Arc'teryx Micon Jacket - Men's

December 6, 2011

Hi Joe,
You've got this system right. For the really cold days, I've paired this up with a Delta LT pullover and that works well. I also like the Accelero as a light mid-layer, that can be used for all the mild weather months as well. I love the Atom LT hoody, but unless it's below 0f, or you're standing around, you would probably roast.

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Softshell Pant - Men's

December 6, 2011

I'd suggest going for the Gamma LT for a four season pant. The Gamma MX is great for cold weather but it's got a fleece backed fabric and would overheat you when temps are above freezing. I'm basically your same size and the medium-regular is what I'd suggest.

Arc'teryx Accelero Jacket - Men's

December 5, 2011

The Accelero will offer slightly less wind resistance but much better breathability and will also be better at fending off abrasion. It doesn't have the fleece inside like the Driclime which makes it light and really packable, but not quite as warm. There is the Solano which is more similar to the DriClime, but I prefer the Accelero.

Arc'teryx Tempest Jacket - Women's

December 5, 2011

The Tempest has pit zips. The Goretex Softshell is quite a bit softer than proshell. It also has more warmth because of the fuzzy inside. Proshell is tougher, more packable and a bit more breathable.
