Rockies, Tropics and Desert, and big crazy cities.
  • Bio:

I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row.

I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets, I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I'm bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.

I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear.

I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number nine and have won the weekend passes. Last summer I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I bat .400. My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me.

I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy.

I once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed several covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down.

I have made extraordinary four course meals using only a mouli and a toaster oven. I breed prizewinning clams. I have won bullfights in San Juan, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis.

Arc'teryx Sentry Jacket - Men's

A couple details to consider. The Sentry uses Arc'teryx lamination to install the insulation. This does away with cold spots, helps the loft to last longer, and keeps the michelin man look away. Also, attention to detail, i.e. no exposed stitching, waterproof cuffs, and really durable face fabric that isn't boardy, make for a jacket that will last; and perform better on a daily basis. Design, materials, and construction are what make Arc'teryx distinctive from others.

Arc'teryx Stinger Bib - Men's

The lace hook is primarily used with lace-up alpine climbing boots. For ski boots, the elastic cuff works good to keep the cuff from riding up. I actually snapped the hook off my pants because I found it getting in the way with my ski boots.

The Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV hood is not removable (the Sidewinder AR has a hood that stows in the collar)This jacket is cut for layering. I'd suggest buying your normal size, and you will still be able to put a couple layers underneath with no problem.

Arc'teryx Hercules Hooded Fleece Jacket - Men's

I've got both the Arc'teryx Atom and the Hercules Hoody. I find it depends a bit on the weather, which one is warmer. If there's no wind or moisture involved, the Hercules feels a bit warmer. When the wind kicks up, and your not concerned about overheating, the Atom gives more protection, and hence, is warmer. This is a bit of splitting hairs, because the insulation value of the two is very similar. What separates them is breathability (Hercules is better), abrasion resistance (Hercules)and packability (Atom). For shedding moisture and wind, the Atom has got it, but just by a bit- I know, not easy!!!

Arc'teryx Preceda Short - Men's

Jim, I've got a pair of Preceda shorts, and I'd say fit-wise they're pretty typical Arc'teryx-athletic fit; certainly not baggy. I'm a 32" waist and wear a medium (33" on size chart) and I don't use the waist cinch cord because they stay on just fine while I'm running. I guess I'd say to try the XXL. I do really like these, and have worn them for a lot of different activities.

Arc'teryx Hercules Hooded Fleece Jacket - Men's

The Arc'teryx Hercules Hoody has a smooth, tightly woven face fabric;more softshell than fleece (think "hardfleece). Still blocks a good amount of wind, and sheds light moisture, but is really breathable.

Arc'teryx Hercules Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's

The difference between the Arc'teryx Hercules and Gamma SV hoody is in the face fabric. The Hercules uses the 02 version which is less wind resistant, and more breathable. These two jackets will be about similar warmth without wind- Gamma blocks about 90% and Hercules about 50%. For layering Hercules is more comfortable, as outerwear, the Gamma offers more protection.

The Arc'teryx Squamish is fairly light, and will block most wind and light drizzle. Another good option for more protection, and only a bit more weight is the Arc'teryx Venta LT; totally windproof, very water resistant, but still good breathability

Certainly better breathability than Gore shells (either pac-lite or pro-shell) but less weather protection. It wont add much insulation as a mid layer. double hood won't be a problem, simply tuck the under layer into the outer layer hood and they work well together.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Pant - Men's

I'd suggest you go for a Large Arc'teryx Beta AR. That will give you enough room to layer, but not be floppy. I'm a 32 and the Medium fits me, but if I wear them with base and fleece pants, there is no extra room.

Arc'teryx Stingray Jacket - Men's

November 20, 2009

The Arc'teryx Stingray is cut to accommodate layers, and you should have plenty of room (one consideration, smooth-faced layers work better than traditional fuzzy fleece due to the fleece lining of the coat-check the Atom or Tau)The Gore-Tex Softshell is totally waterproof. It's the membrance sandwiched in the middle, plus the DWR treated face fabric that keep water out.

The Arc'teryx Gamma LT pullover is more weather resistant, and stretchy compared to the Accelero, but the Accelero breathes better, and is better at wicking moisture. I like the Gamma LT for climbing and ski touring. The Accelero is great for running and biking and Nordic skiing.

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pullover Jacket - Women's

November 19, 2009

On my Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pullover the big side zipper/pit zip makes it easy to get in and out, but it still has to go over your head. Fit is the same as the Alpha SL jacket. Arc'teryx Griffon Jacket - Men's

November 19, 2009

Craine, the Arc'teryx Griffon is an ideal layering piece, more so than the sigma LT- better breathability, more pliable fabric so it doesn't feel constrictive, and still a good stand alone for mild weather. Blocks about half the wind-not windproof like the windstopper jackets, and has a good DWR so it will shed snow and light rain.

Arc'teryx Fury SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 17, 2009

I'm not super familiar with the genesis, but I've used the Arc'teryx Fury SV a bunch- it was my main ski jacket last season. The Fury is made with Windstopper and has taped seams, so I never had any leaking, even in Utah spring snowstorms. It also breathes well, and has a good measure of stretch. Not sure what the membrane Marmot is using, but the WP/breathe specs on that say "not specified" which, to me, means "not very". Also, I asked an Arc'teryx designer why they don't do welded seams, and the response was because it leaves a lip that gets caught and can damage the seam. Arc is using a lo-profile seam that hides the threads, and makes a very flat, clean seam. Plus, I think the Arc'teryx fit tends to be accurate and not boxy. I still love my Fury after 50-ish ski days, resort, hiking, and backcountry.

Arc'teryx S240 Sport Climbing Harness

November 17, 2009

The Arc'teryx S240 would work as a trad harness, but the Arc'teryx R320 is better suited with 4 racking loops, and a rear haul loop for tag lines. I find the 2 loops don't carry enough gear unless you're running it out, or take a sling along. Both styles pack down really small.

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 17, 2009

You can compare warmth by checking the weight of insulation. The Arc'teryx Atom is designed to work as a mid-layer, as well as a light, stand-alone jacket. It's got stretch panels fleece under the arm to reduce bulk, and add some breathability. This compliments the fairly close fit, so as not to be constricting. I wear a medium in this, just like I do in nearly every other Arc'teryx item.

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pullover Jacket - Women's

November 16, 2009

The Arc'teryx Alpha SL could be used as a ski jacket. It will keep you dry and block the wind. If you'll be skiing a lot of days, you may want a jacket with a more durable fabric. This Gore Paclite is designed for maximum pack-ability, and trades super tough face fabric, and inside backer material, to accomplish this. I've used mine as a compliment to a softshell for an added layer in really harsh conditions, but for skiing resort days, I'd recommend the Beta AR, Sidewinder, or Stingray from Arc'teryx.

I've got a few collared shirts for those rare formal occasions. After I got the Arc'teryx Motive Polo, I actually started wearing it, for everyday. It's a really soft blend of cotton and poly which keeps if from looking wrinkled like an all cotton shirt would, and it's really comfortable because of the touch of stretch. Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

This is not a softshell like the stingray is. It is similar to the goretex shells like the sidewinder in feel and "noise" but it is just a windbreaker. It will breathe a bit better than the sidewinder, similar to the Stingray softshell material and the seams are not sealed. The warmth will be similar to the stingray too since it does have a light liner.Compared to the Stingray, a bit lighter, more breathable, equally wind resistant, and not as water resistant if rain or wet snow is involved. Dry snow, you'll stay equally dry. It actually does have sealed seams, but they aren't certified as waterproof because Gore-Tex doesn't allow that on a Windstopper item. it is much quieter than a Sidewinder as far as fabric goes, and also more stretchy than any of the Gore'tex jackets, like Stingray or Sidewinder.BTW, the Sidewinder is more breathable than the Stingray because of the Laminate and the fleece liner in the stingray.

Aah, describing color, that's always easy. The Copper color in the Arc'teryx Venta SV here is pretty accurate, the Aztec looks a bit washed out. One other consideration, the Copper is the new version. You get smoother face fabric (no rip stop, but still super tough) much cleaner seams (no top-stitch, seam taped inside, less snagging)and a bit more stretch. Go Copper...

Arc'teryx Stinger Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

The Arc'teryx Stinger doesn't use a zip-in liner (none of the Arc'teryx jackets do)because it creates a stiff panel down the middle of your chest, as well as a potential cold spot where your insulating layer gaps. I'd suggest wearing a separate insulating layer(I like the Tau pullover or the new Atom jacket)which also gives more options for fine tuning your warmth.

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

I've lost count of days that I've worn my Arc'teryx Tau Pullover, but it's now 3 years old and I'm sure it's been worn over 100 days (each year). Climbing-smooth face bounces off, instead of snagging on, rocks. Skiing-layers nice without bunching because of the smooth face, and it also sheds light snow (and light beer, I live in UT) while hiking. Daily wear-blocks a bit of wind, which is great for spring and fall. And, it still looks great, sure it's got a hole or two from flying embers, but no pilling or wear spots. This is way more than a fleece pullover.

Arc'teryx Solo Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2009

My Arc'teryx Solo hits just below the waist on my pants, so I consider it to be a short jacket. It's designed to work as a layer, so the length is cut this way so as not to hang out from your shell. One consideration in comparing; the Therma-Tek is an Arc'teryx exclusive fabric- water-repellent treated Primaloft. It's basically waterproof in that it will not absorb moisture, and the loft is extra resilient due to this treatment.

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2009

I just got the Arc'teryx Strato, and it is made from a fleece like none other. It's got a cool texture that looks like a knit sweater crossed with a fleece. The Strato fits a bit closer than my Covert, and hence, layers better. Also, the stretchy cuffs are really low-profile so it's not bulky on the wrist when it's under my shell. The fabric seems like it will maintain it's smooth appearance because it's a really tight weave. Pretty classic looking, and you don't look like an outdork when you wear it around town. I'm actually surprised it only costs a bit more than the old TNF Denali, cause it's way nicer.

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

November 13, 2009

The extra cost of the Arc'teryx Alpha SV is due to the face fabric. The SV uses a super durable face fabric that holds up to a ridiculous amount of abuse. The Alpha LT uses a lighter face fabric, that, while not as tough as the SV, is more durable than any other jacket for the weight. Buy the one that will fit your needs- if you're planning on wearing it daily, for years, go SV. I have the LT because I usually wear softshell jackets, and only pull out the gore-tex when it's really nasty.

Arc'teryx Scarab Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Scarab Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2009

The Scarab jacket from Arc'teryx is super nice for lift and tram riding. It's made with a couple different types of fleece laminated inside. Highloft in the back and shoulders, for some good warmth, and lowloft under the arms, where it helps keep the bulky feeling to a minimum. I really like the soft feel of the Scarab compared to shell jackets I've been using for the last bunch of years, but it's still totally weather proof. Arc'teryx did a good job with the rollaway hood, it's easy to pull out, but doesn't feel like a neck brace when it's rolled away. I usually just wear a wool baselayer and that keeps me warm on mild days. I'd suggest getting a layer with a smooth face fabric (Tau or Atom are good), so it doesn't bind up on the fleece laminated inside

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 13, 2009

The Coreloft is used because it has large and small diameter insulation fibers. This adds durability, and also allows using a face fabric that breathes better, since it isn't as prone to penetrating the fabric because of the larger fibers. This compliments the Luminara which is a 20denier ripstop that has good weather resistance but breathes much better than most other nylon fabrics.

Suunto t3c Heart Rate Monitor with Comfort Belt

November 13, 2009

This problem is due to the fact that the radio signal emitted by the chest strap can't travel through water. Suunto makes a Memory belt that has internal memory, so can record your HR while swimming, then be downloaded for analysis. The Memory belt will also send a signal to the watch while you're on dry land.

Arc'teryx Kappa SV Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 13, 2009

The Arc'teryx Kappa SV is much warmer than the Atom. Kappa has 200gm insulation, and Atom, 60gm. That being said, if you need a really warm coat, this will be the warmest jacket for the lowest bulk. This is due to the laminated insulation construction, which eliminates cold spots, and the "michelin man" look that baffled jackets have. Also, the face fabric is fairly soft.

Arc'teryx Easyrider Jacket - Women's

November 13, 2009

Yeah, I'd say the Arc'teryx Easyrider is too warm for running. A better option for cold running, that is still soft and fleecy, is the Hercules. The face fabric is much more breathable, still blocks about half the wind, and has nice fuzzy high-loft fleece inside. Plus it's cut a bit more athletic than the easyrider

Arc'teryx Silo 30 Backpack - 1648-1831cu in

November 11, 2009

MT Man, I've carried skis on the Silo 30. I used this pack for the past 2 winters and the carry system works well. I didn't find it necessary to re-adjust each time, just don't cinch the straps after removing your skis. I've found that it can be used to carry diagonally, vertically, or A-Frame, with just a bit of strap adjustment. One comment about the internal organization, the separator is designed to have shovel blades stowed towards the outside of the pack (along with probe and handle, for which there are sleeves), and clothing, etc, can be separated by stowing them toward your back, keeping them from spilling out when the panel is opened. This arrangement also keeps your clothes from coming in contact with any snow your blade may carry to the inside. I dig mine!

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Bib - Men's

November 11, 2009

I'd recommend the Arc'teryx Theta SV as a ski pant. Both use the same fabric in the legs, but the Theta SV uses a highly breathable back panel, lower front (just above belly button), and is built with more ski-specific articulation in the knees, and internal powder gaiters. The Alpha SV has removable foam pads in the knees, and a much taller torso.

Arc'teryx Celeris Vest - Men's

November 11, 2009

Arc'teryx makes the Celeris Vest with a medium density weave, which has a very light urethane coating. It is more breathable than your typical nylon vest due to this combo, and has a bit more weather resistance, too. Hope this helps, it's difficult to quantify breathability.

Arc'teryx Stingray Jacket - Men's

November 11, 2009

Hi Doug, The Arc'teryx Stingray has a drop hood, with a collar; it does not stow or remove. It is built with Gore-Tex softshell, which has a light fleece laminated to the inside, which does add a bit of insulation, and also accounts for most of the weight difference. As for which one: if you're primarily using it as ski/board jacket, the Stingray is better, because of features (pow-skirt, etc). The Theta AR is good as a ski coat, but is better for hiking, travel, etc- more versatile, and packable.

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Women's

November 9, 2009

I always take the Arc'teryx Alpha LT with me on backcountry trips. It seems like a rain coat, but the face fabric is super tough, without being stiff, and it breathes better. Also, it rolls up to about the size of a sub-sandwich. It's the best BC skiing coat I've owned.

Arc'teryx Tau Fleece Jacket - Men's

November 9, 2009

It's most similar to the Arc'teryx Gamma MX in fit. The Tau jacket doesn't have the same stretch woven face fabric, and instead, has a super thin skin of urethane, which sheds moisture, adds a touch of wind resistance (less than Easyrider), and still allows good breathabilty. It's pretty unique in that it feels like a fleece, but is a lot more versatile and durable.

Arc'teryx Gamma AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 9, 2009

I'd suggest going with the Arc'teryx Gamma AR if you want to use if for layering. It still blocks about 90% of wind, but breathes, and layers better than a Venta AR, due to the stretch woven fabric, and lack of Windstopper membrane. This jacket will cover a huge range of conditions. I've skied plenty of days in light snow, and it worked great.

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pullover - Men's

November 9, 2009

I'd say the combo you describe here would be pretty good for mild days. Just make sure to wear a good baselayer (I like the Rho LTW). For colder days check out the Atom to replace the Accelero. It's one of my favorite new Arc'teryx jackets, and really versatile.

Arc'teryx Kappa SV Hooded Jacket - Women's

November 9, 2009

the Arc'teryx Kappa SV has 200gm insulation, and the Atom 60gm. So, it's more than twice as thick, and also built with windstopper. The Kappa isn't bulky for it's warmth (laminated insulation means even warmth; no cold spot where the baffles are stitched), but it's more of a stand-alone warm jacket, whereas the Atom is designed to be a mid-layer as well as a light outerwear jacket.

Arc'teryx Stingray Jacket - Men's

November 9, 2009

I've been wearing a Medium in the Arc'teryx Stingray, and I'm 5'11, 175. Enough room for a couple layers (as long as they're not floppy fitting) but not too big when I wear just a baselayer. I'd suggest a medium for you as well. In my opinion, the ideal layer for this jacket is the Arc'teryx Tau pullover.

The Arc'teryx Fission SV is the warmest. It's got 200gm Primaloft, and the Fission SL has 120gm equivalent. Additionally, the Fission SL has a lighter face fabric, shorter cut and pit zips.

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Women's

October 29, 2009

The Arc'teryx Rampart could be used for snowshoeing as it's got some weather resistance, is breathable, and dries quickly. I think it might be a little less weather resistance than would be ideal for winter sports, and I'd recommend the Gamma LT instead.

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

October 26, 2009

For layering under the Arc'teryx Theta AR, my first choices would be the Hercules jacket or the Atom LT Jacket, they both layer better than a Venta AR , but still work well as stand-alone jackets for mild weather (Hercules blocks about 50% of wind and has good water beading, Atom is basically windproof and really compressible)Other good options- Tau Jacket or pullover.

Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket - Women's

October 23, 2009

This is a shell jacket and as such, doesn't have insulation. It's great with a fleece (Delta SV is super warm and low bulk). If you want a more insulated version, check the Arc'teryx Scarabee, Venta SV, or Easyrider. Ideal warm coat is the Kappa SV or Fission SV, but the trade-off for super warm, is that they are more bulky; still super comfy though. The Arc'teryx patterning tends to move well, so a puffy doesn't feel restrictive.

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Jacket - Men's

October 23, 2009

The Arc'teryx Gamma LT jacket doesn't have a liner per se, but it uses a plated fabric, which uses nylon and polyester threads. The weaving technique used puts the nylon on the outside (for durability and weather resistance) and the polyester inside
(for moisture management and softness). It makes it a cool piece because it has multiple performing fabrics in a light, stretchy textile. great jacket for the money!
