prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2010

These are my favorite pants for hiking and rock climbing. They are light, and very stretchy. They can stand up to a surprising amount of abuse, and still look great. I am usually a 34x30, and the mediums fit me great in the waist. They are a little long, but when rolled up they work fine.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 August 26, 2010

for a cheap rain jacket it works great. No, not the most durable... or the most breathable.... but it does the job. It is great when using with a softshell. The precip jacket stays in the top of the pack, except for those times when it gets really nasty. Light and cheap.

Hydro Photon Steripen Traveler Mini Retail Pack

Hydro Photon Steripen Traveler Mini Retail Pack

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2010

This is not as dead simple as a pump filter... but it is so much lighter. This is not really a filter per say... so be sure to use something to get the big chunky stuff out. (I use a coffee filter). I have used this in some pretty nasty stuff, and I haven't got sick yet... so, it must be working!

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2010

this jacket is an absolute classic! With good reason. It is nice to see a company recognize when a product is working, and then LEAVE IT ALONE!
My favorite feature of the jacket is the huge chest pocket. It is the perfect size for a folded up map.

Mammut Lime Pant - Men's

This is a decent crossover pant. It has just enough stretch for moderate rock climbs, and looks decent enough to wear around town.

Mammut Ultimate Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mammut Ultimate Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2010

great jacket for its intended use. I use it as a spring ski jacket, and it works great. The best feature of this jacket is the huge underarm vent zips. They can actually be unzipped all the way, so the jacket can me more like a poncho.
The fabric is smooth, and can be prone to picks... so this is not the jacket to take crack climbing... The hood fits snugly, so it works under a helmet.

MSR Reactor Stove

MSR Reactor Stove

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2010

I had heard many good things about this stove, but was really hesitant to buy it. I mean, all the hype around it, it couldn't possibly perform that well, could it? The short answer is a resounding YES!
For melting snow and boiling water, this stove cannot be beat. That is where is really shines.

Marmot PreCip Pant - Men's

Marmot PreCip Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2010

Great pants for the money. If you are on a budget and just getting into mountaineering, get some REI brand softshell pants and these rain shell pants. Both will surprise you with their performance.
I finally trashed mine, after 5 years of heavy abuse. I couldn't be happier with them.

great pants for mountaineering

Arc'teryx Alpha LT 1/2 Bib Pant - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha LT 1/2 Bib Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2010

It is very difficult to find shell pants that have Full zips on the sides. (Full... from top to bottom). These come in handy when it is just blowing sideways, and you are working hard. You want the full protection but also want ventilation.
I had an older pair of marmot precip rain pants that had this feature, but finally destroyed them on a glissade.
The alpha lt pants are the pants I have been looking for. Light, yet extremely durable. Gore pro shell is not quite as breathable as eVent, but for bottoms they work great. oh... and for those who care... these are MADE IN CANADA.

Arc'teryx Arrakis 40 Backpack - 2441-2624cu in

Arc'teryx Arrakis 40 Backpack - 2441-2624cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2010

Fantastic pack. This is my go to pack for ice climbing in the Pacific NW, due to all the crappy wet snow we get. The fabric is super durable. This pack is a little heavy, but carries wonderfully. The pivot hip belt may sound a little gimmicky, but it actually does help on those high steps. The pack really does stay put. This is a pricey pack, but I really do think it will outlast many other packs, due to the thick material. Now... I just have to figure out a better way to attach my ice tools. (it only has one ice axe keeper)... oh, for all you that care... this is MADE IN CANADA.

Very well thought out....

Norrøna Falketind Integral Backpack - 45L

Norrøna Falketind Integral Backpack - 45L

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2010

This is a minimalist pack. It has a light flexible frame. I would actually hesitate to even call this a framed pack, but it is not quite a true frame-less pack. It does have an extendable collar or sleeve, but the lid doesn't float, so I am not really sure the purpose of this extension. I guess it allows you to stuff it a little further. The description says it has 2 side pockets and one rear top pocket... for some reason I could not find 2 side pockets on mine. It just has the normal lid pocket, (and one on the underside of the lid), and a big zip on the front that allows the user to gain access to the main compartment of the pack. It also has a mini pocket on the inside near the hydration pocket. (sort of like the cilogear packs, if you are familiar with those). Oh, unlike the description says, this pack IS hydration compatible. It does have a strap that goes across the top opening of the pack. This can be used as a rope catch.
It also has two rugged straps on the bottom side of the pack (one on each side), that allow for the carrying of skis. Nice touch.

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

Rating for this product: 5 August 23, 2010

Amazing bindings. Once you take the time to figure out the nuances of dynafit bindings, you will never go back to dukes, or naxos, or any other rail-type binding again.
I use mine mostly backcountry, but they have seen a few resort days. They handled the hardpack just fine.

I hate ski leashes, so these are the next option. These have saved my skis more times than I care to count. Pretty light. As mentioned in other reviews, the instructions do suck. Be sure to use the instructions for wildsnow.com

Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 5, 2009

I am 5 ft. 10 inches and about 155, and a small fits me just right. I do not have a ton of room to layer, but that is how I like it.

One of the lightest three-layer pro shell jackets on the market. While it isn't as durable as the stuff in their SV line, as a piece to be used in alpinism, it is perfect.

Marmot Exum Jacket - Men's

Marmot Exum Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 5, 2009

Had this shell for awhile but really didn't like the fit. Bought at REI during their half off clearance sale for about $130. It fits quite baggy in the torso... if you have a beer gut, this will work for you.
If you want something that is lighter weight and still proshell, go with the LT line of Arc'teryx. Totally worth the money.
