I'm wearing the XL option in this pic. For size reference, I am 6' 180 lbs, 32/33" waist and 33" inseam with an athletic build. I went with the XL to make sure that I'd have a longer inseam. I maybe could have gone with a L but I didn't want to have the pant bottoms ride up when I'm down in a turn or sitting down.

Bomber Bib

FlyLow Gear Baker Bib Pant - Men's

FlyLow Gear Baker Bib Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2011

I almost exclusively wear bibs and am so glad Flylow finally came out with this bad boys. I absolutely love these bibs. They're durable, waterproof, breath like champs, and have extremely useful and efficient ventilation. And don't forget the awesome freeride fit.

The straps have quick release buckle which are nice for getting in and out with ease. Also the side zips go all the way from the top of the hip to about boot top so you can swing the bibs to the side when you need to "do some paper in the office." The top pouch zipper pocket is nice and roomy, but the hidden pocket inside of that isn't as good as the rest of the pockets. The back panel is nice and stretchy which aids in not giving you a hard core melvin when you bend over or squat down.

I definitely sized up to ensure that I got the inseam length I desire. I am 6' 180 lbs, 32/33" waist and 33" inseam with an athletic build and I decided to go with the XL. The waist bagginess doesn't matter because they're bibs and are held up with straps obviously. I expected there to be a little more room in the torso even for an XL, but that's probably because I've been rocking the first generation Trewth Bibs for the past season and they're nice and roomy.

You will not be disappointed with these bibs. The orange is exactly as pictured above; brighter and lighter than you may expect.

Cool addition to my helmet collection.

Smith Maze Helmet

Smith Maze Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 October 26, 2011

Definitely the lightest helmet I have. I used to rock the Variant Brim until the Vantage hit the streets. And then it was all Vantage which I absolutely love due to the weight (or lack thereof), incredible venting, and awesome fit.

I wanted to try this one out plus I really like the Cyan Stereo Maze over the Vantage Cyan Team design and I’m glad I bought this. The rear vents are utilized by merely folding a padding flap back down over itself. Simple enough, and since I stay pretty warm all the time, this thing will stay folded the whole time. There is plenty of plush padding in the dome and the fit is pretty descent. I do wish it had the extra helmet adjuster like the Vantage and Variant, but I’ll do fine without it.

So now I’ll be using this one on days that I’m mainly not doing a bunch of inbounds/sidecountry hiking, and reserve the Vantage for more aggressive hiking and the warmer days.

Backcountry Access Float 36 Winter Backpack - 2197cu in

Backcountry Access Float 36 Winter Backpack - 2197cu in

Rating for this product: 4 October 26, 2011

First off this pack is very well designed, and looks even better in person. I definitely like the looks of the 36 over the 30, plus the added room over the 30 liter is great. I really like the added waistbelt pockets to make up for space taken up by the air bag system.

In addition to the great design, the material on this pack is bomber and very durable. The pack has plenty of padding on the back plus a back panel zipper access (mainly for getting to the airbag system, but some gear can be stored there as well), but the padding isn't ventilated, but that's not a deal killer.

Do note that even though is a 36 liter pack, after the airbag system takes its space, you're left with around 20 liters usable room at most. I wish there was a separator for the avy gear pocket from the rest of the storage, but everything is piled into one pocket. And I wish they made the airbag pocket a tad bit bigger and it’s pretty tight with the airbag in there and getting a deployed airbag back into the pack isn’t as easy as other packs. Just a small bit of added space would make this pack a 5 star rating in my books.

The added mesh helmet holder and compression straps are good enough to store your gear for the uphill. This pack will definitely be getting a lot of time from sidecountry runs to full days in the backcountry. Worth the cost of admission.

Favorite All-around glove

Black Diamond Enforcer Glove

Black Diamond Enforcer Glove

Rating for this product: 4 October 10, 2011

I really like this glove for all-around use and especially on the colder days. I typically climb with too pair of gloves; one for the actually climbing and then sitting at a belay point. This glove works really well for climbing despite its "bulk" compared to a lot of gloves; I didn't get as much movement as I thought I'd get.

The glove is pretty dexterious and the padding is sufficient for the average waterfall. I love that it's gore-tex for those running or wet waterfalls. And the removable liners is a great newer feature for this glove.

I've also spent a good amount of time skiing in this glove.

Cassin Turbo Stream Ice Screw

Cassin Turbo Stream Ice Screw

Rating for this product: 2 October 10, 2011

I had a chance to use these on a climb with my buddy as we needed a few more stubbies than my rack had.

Based on the price and weight alone of these I couldn't recommend them as a good buy. There's nothing that sets these screws above BD Express or Petzl Laser Sonic screws.

The pull out knob can also ice up on multipitches if the waterfall has a little bit of a run on or around the screws.

Definitely not worth the cost.

Atomic Bent Chetler Ski

It really depends on what type of skiing you want to do. Keep it shorter for a lot of tree skiing or backcountry jibbing, or if you really like to open it up then stay bigger with the 192. The ski is going to ski shorter with the rockered tip and tail, so the 183 will feel a lot shorter and the 192 will probably feel normal to what you're used to.

Best NTN Boot out there

Scarpa TX Comp Telemark Boot

Scarpa TX Comp Telemark Boot

Rating for this product: 5 September 26, 2011

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Hands down the best NTN boot there is. Considering all factors (bellows flex, lateral/torsional rigidity, bellows stiffness, quality product) this boot is the best offering for NTN.

And this is coming after I owned and had considerable use on Crispi Shivers, Garmont "False" Prophets, and finally Tx-Comps. I actually wish the bellows were a tad stiffer since there is no black springs option for NTN anymore.

The ski/walk mode is an added bonus as the older versions sucked when you would have one of the mini downhills while skinning and the boot stayed in the forward position. You can't go wrong with the tongue style liner as well. Absolutely loved it since the beginning; it really allows for you to get a more intimate fit than the wrap style. The new style instep buckle setup is pretty nice too. The only thing I would really want to see in this boot is tech fittings. Once that happens I'll be one happy NTN skier.

The only bad thing I can say of this set up is Scarpa dropping the booster strap that came standard with it as it really complemented the rest of the boot well. Picking one up would be worth the extra $30.

Seriously get this boot over any other boot available, it is the best overall option for those that want to charge and get everything out of their boot.

FlyLow Gear Tough Guy Glove

FlyLow Gear Tough Guy Glove

Rating for this product: 4 September 12, 2011

I absolutely love these gloves. They take such abuse and keep on going strong. They are probably the warmest gloves I use for skiing. I really love the knit wirst as it slides on and off so easily (no zipper) and has enough length to fit under my jacket cuff. The Sno-Seal treatment is well done and not just slapped on prior to shipping. I went a full season before needing to redo the DWR treatment.

A really good product.

Well Thought Out and Improved

Scarpa NTN Power Tubes

Scarpa NTN Power Tubes

Rating for this product: 4 September 12, 2011

These are really a great product. The punched or scribed tension indicators are an added plus from the original painted on indicators, which would wash off after a few weeks.

The ends are easily adjusted with a screwdriver or with your hands.

The springs are pretty durable and will last about a full season for me (50+ days). I prefer the Red cartridges but wish they still had the black ones from the original binding. If you like skiing O1 Rid Stiff or 22 Design bindings with the stiffer springs and setting, you'll want to have the Reds and will wish for blacks. If they had the blacks it'd be a 5 star review for me.

DAKINE Amp 18L Hydration Pack - 1100cu in

DAKINE Amp 18L Hydration Pack - 1100cu in

Rating for this product: 4 September 11, 2011

I definitely am glad I picked this pack up. More than enough room for a day out on the bike. The top fleece lined pocket is great for a phone and/or sunglasses. The pockets are well positioned. The shoulder straps have plenty of breathing holes throughout which does help on the heat and lightness factor. I'm glad it came with a built in rain cover; it has handy the other day when a storm hit a little earlier than expected. I like how the bladder compartment is located and accessed on the back panel side. The fold and slide closure system on the bladder works just fine and doesn't leak at all. Honestly this is worth the buy.

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2011

I'm so glad that Rottefella made 125 mm brakes for this year. Even though the brakes stretch easily when done in a binding that is mounted, it sucked having to stretch the brakes between two different width skis. The new 125 mm will take car of it all so I don't even have to stretch any brakes anymore.

It got better

Black Diamond Custom Telemark Ski Boot - Men's

Black Diamond Custom Telemark Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2011

Got a chance to get in these boots and they are definitely a step up from the original. If I still skied 75 mm this would be my boot of choice. Honestly a really solid boot for those that like to ski fast on big stiff planks.

The first thing that you notice is the complete redo of the liner. It works a million times better for warmth, fit, and BOA use than the original. The boa was repositioned and I believe less of a BOA line to coil now too. The cuff flex on this boot matches the bellows flex.

It's a definite good choice for those that want to push themselves and have a boot that'll back them up. I really dig the white buckles too.

Perfect Investment for Telemark Skiing

Arc'teryx Kneecaps

Arc'teryx Kneecaps

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2011

These are absolutely necesary for dropping the knee, ESPECIALLY if you're heading off-piste in deep snow. Initially I thought that the Arc'teryx price was too much compared to the BD knee pads (of which I'm not really a big fan due to their consistently varying movement), but the simple design and quality product have won me over time and time again. I have had three times in which I was tree skiing in some deep snow and the trailing ski had gotten buried under a fallen tree while the leading ski didn't. If I wasn't wearing these knee pads then it would have been a lot more than $60 to replace a shattered knee cap or fix a broken leg.

I never go out without these on now. They'll durable, easy to adjust (even through your pants), and are not bulky at all. Get these and set your mind (and knees) at ease.

Probably anywhere from 1-2 sizes of stretch depending on how tight you like to tie them. So I'd say get a 10.0 and assume they'll be a little tight at first, but after the first two times out, they'll probably start to move towards that "perfect fit."

Garmont "False" Prophet

Garmont Prophet NTN Thermo Ski Boot - Men's

Garmont Prophet NTN Thermo Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 September 1, 2011

This was my second NTN boot and it didn't last too long for me. The boot definitely isn't as torsionally stiff as any of the Crispi boots or the Scarp Tx-Comp. Granted the boot has a smooth forward flex, but this is to an extent. If you ever get in a deep turn, you can feel the toe box deform over the toe bail of the binding. Garmont designed this boot with such a tight fit into the binding, that the boot will start to fold over the bail and put pressure on your big toe if you have a performance fit. This also cause the whole toe box to deform. This doesn't happen in my Shivers or Comps, both of which I also have a performance fit. Even though Garmont "stiffened" up the bellows, the bellows aren't as stiff as stated. I would compare them to a Scarpa T2 or Garmont Synergy, but nothing like the Voodoo or Energy as in bellows flex. For all these reason I lable it the "False" Prophet.

Nice and Stiff but Different Flex

Crispi Crispi EVO NTN Telemark Boot

Crispi Crispi EVO NTN Telemark Boot

Rating for this product: 4 September 1, 2011

This boot is a great stiff boot. It has great lateral support and a good forward lean. However the Crispi bellows seems to be limited in flex due to the single bellow versus accordian style of Scarpa or Garmont. I also didn't like the toe box on these boots. They're definitely more narrow than the alternate brands. Crispi has softened the bellows to match the NTN binding spring strength which a lot of people like, but I'd rather see teh binding springs go up in strength. The our mode isn't as good as Garmont or Scarpa. If the bellows were accordian style and the toe box just a bit wider, I'd be skiing these still. For me the Scarpa TX Comp is the go to boot for all of NTN.

Black Diamond Custom Telemark Ski Boot - Men's

Black Diamond Custom Telemark Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 27, 2011

Thisbecame my favorite boot right before I switched over to NTN. This is definitely the stiffest boot available for 75 mm in my opinion. This boot allows you to tranfer power to your skis and remain in powerful control at high speeds in less than ideal conditions. They tour great and ski even better. The liner rocks especially with the platic reinforced cuff and the heel locking pads. My only complaint on these boots is the toe box being too narrow for my feet, but these are wider than Crispis.

Scarpa TX Comp Telemark Boot

May 27, 2011

The Comp doesn't have the same flex as the '07 T1's. NTN boots definitely havea softer flexing bellow than 75 mm boots, and that's because of the physics of the binding. But this is definitely the best NTN boot for flex, stiffness, control out there. I prefer the comps to the Prophets, which I think are an overrated boot, which is not stiff laterally. The prophets are going to be softer in all areas of stiffness and flex than the T1's.

CW-X Expert Tight - Women's

May 27, 2011

Basing everything on the men's I'lll say that I would judge it on your waist. If you have a wider waist by measurement, I'd go with the large as the waist band may seem too tight in the mediums. If you consider yourself to have a narrower waist, then go with the mediums. As for length, I have the mediums in men's and am 6' and these would be fine for me if I was 6' 2". There's enough length pre stretched and then stretched.

If you're refering to the mount pattern, they both conform to the "standard" mount pattern that was developed a few years back, which is now officially gone as a standard. But if you're refering to using existing mount plates, it will not work.

Smith Vantage Helmet

May 10, 2011

Not the greatest fit. The Crowbars aren't as wide or big of a goggle as the I/O or I/Os. MY buddy rocks the Crowbars or Splice with the Vantage and he always has a gaper gap between his goggles and helmet. He fogs up more than me (almost never) with his combination versus me with my vantage and I/O combo.

Dang good glove with nice features

Stoic Welder Short Glove

Stoic Welder Short Glove

Rating for this product: 4 March 31, 2011

I'm pretty impressed with these gloves. I love the vertical zipper offset on the forehand. It really helps to open this glove up wide and doesn't get caught when trying to use with a narrow cuffed shell. The softshell outer layer definitely helps with dexterity. I've had these in 10 degree days and had no issues staying warm. The Talon finger design is okay and is a non factor either which way for myself. I've had them on during a really wet spring day and didn't have any issues with soak through.

The only gripe I have is that the thumb is a little short but the insulation has stretched enough with use to remedy that and make it a non-issue.

A good buy for me this year.

FlyLow Gear Stash Pant - Men's

February 14, 2011

Flylow pants do run a little bit short compared to the rest of the industry in the inseam versus waistline size/lengths; designed by and made for some of the shorter ski comrades. I am 6' 180 lbs with a 33" waist and a 33" inseam guy and do not like having cuffs up by my boot tops. After talking with some buddies I went with an XL and a good belt to get the fit and length I wanted. I'm not sure how much longer the XXLs would be but you can also combine the pants with the hook in feature of the jacket to make a psuedo one piece which would accommodate a shorter inseam.

FlyLow Gear Logo Flex Fit Baseball Hat

February 14, 2011

I think that BC.com has the size options marked incorrectly. These should come in S/M and L/XL for flexfit sizes. I'd ask a gear guru.

Great versatile, yet stylish pair of pants

FlyLow Gear Chemical Pant - Men's

FlyLow Gear Chemical Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2011

Just picked these up last week and had my first tour out with them this weekend. I'm normally a bib guy; this is my first pair of pants and I have 3 other bibs that get worn regularly. I really like the fit and roominess of my Trew bibs from the '09-'10 season of which I bought a large; I'm 6' 180lbs athletic build about 33" waist and 33" inseam. With that in mind I decided to pick up the Chemical Pant in XL, since I wanted a good length and not to have my boot tops showing. Definitely worked just as I wanted it to. The combination of the adjustable elastic waist and a Flylow belt made the waist feel as if they fit perfectly while giving my the freeride fit that I wanted. I didn't have to pull them up or crank down on my belt at all. The cross-flow ventilation made me feel like it was a 20 degree day while it was 50 at the base of the mountian and 32 up top.

The only things I don't like about them is the lack of cargo pockets for stashing whatever (gloves, skins, beanie, etc.) and the front pockets which had a somewhat smaller opening and felt a little less than durable. But those are just personal preferences versus product defects or issues.

Find your fit and size and pull the trigger on these bad boys. Love 'em.

Finally a bib with style

Trew Gear Trewth Bib Pant - Men's

Trew Gear Trewth Bib Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 9, 2011

I'm really diggin the Trewth bibs. I picked up a pair of last year's (gray) model as well and absolutely love them. The new changes and revisions to the bib make it even better. The addition of hand pockets and quick release buckles on the shoulder straps definitely upted the points for this bib. The only thing I don't like about the revisions is the change in cut to a less baggier version. I actually prefer the original bagginess to the newer one. The material is really durable. The bib keeps you warm and cools you down fast with the full side zips. And since there is style incorporated in to these, I'll be buying these first before Arc'Teryx or The North Face.

Icelantic Keeper Ski

December 22, 2010

I'd go with the BC line for your boot center. Going back further makes you lose some of the intended platform and puts a lot of weight back on your tails.

Red Total Impact Short - Men's

Red Total Impact Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 10, 2010

I know that "smart" plastics are the "thing" nowadays but I still prefer the older RED Total Impact Shorts with teh removeable plastic to these. I notice hip checks and impacts in this style short more than I do in the older hard plastic style.

Stoic Merino 200 Bottom - 3/4-Length - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2010

I absolutely love these and have a couple pair now to use for skiing. The 3/4 cut is great and I don't want to wear full length bottoms anymore.

Good lightweight shell

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 10, 2010

This shell is one tough lightweight worker. Really abrasion and water resistant, plus it breathes well. It really has held up well to all the abuse I've put it through. Two things I don't like about it; no pits zips and definite SIZE UP. I originally got a large, but that ended up fitting similar to an athletic medium in the chest and waist. The arms are plenty long in any size. And yes the hood can handle a ski helmet.

Garmont "False" Prophet

Garmont Prophet NTN Thermo Boot - Men's

Garmont Prophet NTN Thermo Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 10, 2010

The bellows aren't as stiff as stated. I would compare them to a Scarpa T2 or Garmont Synergy, but nothing like the Voodoo or Energy as in bellows flex. For all these reason I lable it the "False" Prophet.

Scarpa NTN Binding

Scarpa NTN Binding

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2010

I no longer own any 75 mm telemark gear. I absolutely love my NTN gear. Pair this binding up with Scarp Comps and red catridges, and you'll see the mountain differently. This binding requires proper technique (pressuring the cuff versus collapsing the bellows with a duckbill) so be prepared on the initial switch. I don't think I could switch back to 75 mm.

Icelantic Nomad Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2010

This is my go to ski for the days in which I have no idead what I'll encounter for snow condition. I've put more days on this ski then any other in my quiver. Icelantic bases are super durable and can take a beating. Trust me, P-tex point at the Bird won't phase these skis.

Shamanize your mountain

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Icelantic Shaman Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2010

I absolutely love the versatility of these skis. They kill it in everything from groomers, to bumps, to crud, and pow. These GS inspired pow skis have a killer shape that just rails on the groomers but floats so effortlessly for a non rockered ski. You need to ski these aggressively to get the most out of them. Absolutely love mine with my NTN set up.

These skis kill it. An absolute blast in pow and crud. The early rise tip really helps avoid the tele tip dives, and just keeps the ski ontop. I definitely love my pair. If you're skeptical get out on a free demo and you'll end up loving 'em.

Scarpa TX Comp Telemark Boot

November 10, 2010

Actually you can throw these in Fritchis or dukes if you like. They ski just fine. There is a fine, fine adjustment, or more likely put, a getting acquainted phase, but they can be used for certain AT bindings.

Best NTN Boot

Scarpa TX Comp Telemark Boot

Scarpa TX Comp Telemark Boot

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2010

Hands down the best NTN boot there is. Considering all factors (bellows flex, lateral/torsional rigidity, bellows stiffness, quality product) this boot is the best offering for NTN. And this is coming after I owned and considerable use on Crispi Shivers, Garmont "False" Prophets, and finally Tx-Comps. I actually wish the bellows were a tad stiffer since there is no black springs for NTN anymore. I really don't notice the lack of a ski/walk mode as an issu; they tour just fine. I can see where it wouldn't be as comfortable if you are skinning in the flats for a long way. Seriously get this boot over any other boot available.

A Must Have

Black Diamond O2 Backcountry Kit

Black Diamond O2 Backcountry Kit

Rating for this product: 4 March 20, 2008

A quick fix replacement kit is a must have for any freeheeler. After seeing so many of my friends break G3 bindings week after week I decided to get a little insurance package against missing ski days or having my day shortened. The only thing that sucks is that the cable replacements are designed for the new O2 Bindings and are of little use for the older binding style. A must have.

Awesome Tool

CAMP USA Awax Ice Tool

CAMP USA Awax Ice Tool

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2007

This tool is amazing. I have climbed on four different tools this season (Black Diamon Prophet, Petzl Quark, Nomic, and Camp Awax), and this tool is the best leashed tool that I have used. This tool is so light compared to any other tool out there. It has an energy efficient swing. It excels on vertical ice. Throw the Camp grip rest horn accessory on the bottom of this tool and your money for leashed or leashless climbing. I thought highly of it for mixed climbing. The Camp sliding leash is annoying when you try to get back in it after taking it out for screw placement. But if you outfit it with a BD Android leash it's all good.
