Marker Griffon Ski Binding

January 29, 2012

Will the Salomon Quest 10 boots work with these bindings? I saw some people saying not to use the stock soles, but I have a friend that uses them with Jesters. Just done know If he is doing that in error or not.

Armada JJ Ski

January 29, 2012

I love skiing, but have had very little time on the mountain (10 full days). Turns out I may be moving to Salt Lake City in the coming months and have been researching ski gear to purchase?
As for my skill level I have to say intermediate for now, but after day 4 I was comfortable on most of the blacks (that were open) at Alta and Snowbird, and continued to progress through the end of my last trip. Confident all around the mountain, but still a little clumsy with sticks as tall as me strapped to my feet... Just need to improve form and I will continue to excel. I was skiing Rossi S3s 178 for most of the trip, but wanted something a bit fatter. I have only heard rave reviews about the JJs, so I'm leaning that way. I am 5'11" 165-170. Considering my height weight and skill level, would the 185 be too big for me for my first ski?
If it might be a little too much ski, what about the Francis Bacons?

Marker Griffon Ski Binding

January 28, 2012

I am an currently an intermediate skier but progressing very rapidly; probably advanced by next season. I am 5'11" 160-170lbs (summer/winter) and I am done growing / putting on weight. Should I consider a binding with a higher DIN?
Also I'm leaning towards the JJ 185 right now, which has a 115 waist. I'm assuming I would go 110 brakes and bend?

Salomon Ghost 100 Ski Boot - Men's

January 27, 2012

Loving this Pro feedback! Backcountry.com is legit...
So I think I'll be trying on the Quest 10 and the Ghost 100 as soon as I have the chance, but leaning toward the Quest at the moment. I will also be keeping an eye out for for skis (crossing fingers for the Francis Bacons!) and bindings during end of season sales. What bindings do you think I should be on the lookout for to compliment the Quest / Ghost? Based on your other reviews and answers I know you'll say Salomon, but which ones would be good for my use & (lack of) skill level? I am doubting that I would go above a 12 DIN considering skill & weight, at least before my first pair of bindings wear out...

Salomon Ghost 100 Ski Boot - Men's

January 26, 2012

Thanks for the good answer, Jamey,
You seem to have a lot of familiarity with the Quest line, maybe you could answer a couple more questions for me.
Is the Flex index the major difference between the Quest 10(110 flex), 12(120 flex), and 14(130 flex)? It is saying that this Ghost boot has a flex index of 100; doesn't that mean that this Ghost 100 would be less stiff than the quests? Am I missing something? Also BC is saying the the Ghost 100 is lighter than all of the Quests except the Pro. (looks like the model you have listed on your profile is a different version of the same boot; may have changed a bit for 2011)
I am 5'11" & ~165 lbs; not sure what range flex I should be looking at. Can't really say that I'm an 'advanced' skier as I only have about 10 full days of skiing under my belt; but I can say I am comfortable on the blacks at Alta(or the ones that were open 3 weeks ago)... May be a little sloppy on them, but I am confident on skis. Just need to put more time in and work on form.

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

January 26, 2012

Ended up using the balm on my gloves before their first day of use. You could really tell a difference in the leather the morning after applying, softer and seemed a bit more water repellent.

Salomon Ghost 100 Ski Boot - Men's

January 24, 2012

Would the Quest line be significantly better for hiking than these boots? I am looking to purchase my first pair of boots as I expect to take at least one more ski trip this season and hate rentals. I am also expecting to move to Utah this year, but probably not in time for this season. Once I AM living there I will probably be riding lifts most of the time, but my buddy and I will probably be hiking for runs often enough, so I want to make sure a purchase a boot with hiking in mind.

To elaborate a little bit, I have tried on a number of different boot brands and salomon have by far been the best fitting. I WILL have a pro consultation/fitting prior to actual purchase, but I expect they will tell me to go with Salomon... So in anticipation of that, I have started considering the Ghost and Quest models.

Good Helmet

Giro Revolver Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 January 23, 2012

Inexpensive helmet that comes in a variety of colors. Kept my head nice and warm during varying conditions on the slopes. my iPhone headphones slipped right into the speaker compatible each cushions so I could listen to my ski playlist if I wanted to. Even sounded pretty good...
Comfortable and didn't give me gaper gap problems with my VZ Skylabs; the attached photo was about as bad as it would get (if I wouldn't check meself everyone now and again)

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

January 23, 2012

This season I ended up getting the XCR, and my best buddy got the Heli. I tried one on each hand and there didn't seem to be too much of a difference. I used them 6 full days and they continued to loosen up considerable through use. I wouldn't be too worried about them being too stiff.

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 23, 2012

Unfortunately I don't get enough use out of these boots. They are very comfortable and light. Stood in a freezing cold mountain stream for about 3 minutes waiting for the lighting to change for a shot I wanted; stayed completely dry and didn't chill my feet.
I did get a blister on my right heel due to some heel lift on my first 20 mile hike with these (my right foot is very slightly smaller than my left), guess I'll just wear a cycling sock under my SmartWools next time...
Bottom line, I would buy these (or another Asolo boot) again. Have recommended these to friends.

I will always have a pair of Costas

Costa Del Mar Brine Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 580 Glass Lens

Costa Del Mar Brine Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 580 Glass Lens

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2012

Costa Del Mar sunglasses are very well known in the fishing world, where their ability to cut glare and be worn all day long are essential. I rarely use my Costas for fishing, but like them for the same properties. These are great sunglasses for driving, to work or on 18 hour roadtrips.Recently wore mine from San Antonio, TX to Vail, CO, without ever having to remove them due to discomfort. Very light.
I have worn these skiing as well , and they did a great job on the snow(though I prefer using goggles...).
My first pair was stolen by the mean Gulf of Mexico (despite wearing croakies to keep them around my neck... Dont ask...), but have had my second pair for over two years now. No scratches on the lenses, no wear/tear. I have the expensive glass lens model (thank you, Ms. Girlfriend), which I believe have a tendency to repel lens scratches a bit better than the polycarbonate.

Check my profile for picture.

Great Around Town

CamelBak Better Bottle w/ Bite Valve - .75L

CamelBak Better Bottle w/ Bite Valve - .75L

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2012

Girlfriend and I love these water bottles. I have one at work and at home, and my girlfriend carries hers around. Nice to have at work because it somehow encourages you to drink a lot more water than I normally do. Nice to have around the house, especially next to the bed for late night thirst.
Haven't field tested it much, cause if I'm going hiking or anything I'll just take my Osprey with hydration pack. I think another reviewer said it right; this bottle has moving parts, so it might not be a good idea to rely on it when you will be exposed to the elements for a duration of time. Probably better to go with a traditional nalegene for those type of excursions.

Awesome short hike pack

Osprey Packs Manta 25 Hydration Pack - 1300-1500cu in

Rating for this product: 4 January 19, 2012

This pack is awesome for hiking. Pockets in all the right places, adjust-ability of the straps is good. Hydration system is one of the best features for this pack. There is a frame/netting back piece that keeps direct contact of the pack off of your back; this feature helps from getting sweaty back. Beware though, the internal storage of the 25L is pretty limited due to the construction of the back piece and shell that protects the bladder.
I used this pack while skiing and it wasn't ideal. Mouth piece and hydration tube froze up pretty good... For skiing or winter activities I will be purchasing the Osprey Kode 30 or 38.
Bottom line: great pack for hiking, not a huge amount of storage, may consider sizing up.

Long Live Arc'teryx

Arc'teryx Sabre SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 18, 2012

Got this jacket this season and wasn't sure what to expect for the weather conditions I would be skiing in this year. I decided to just purchase the jacket and the 150 weight Icebreaker baselayer and layer as needed on top of that. REALLY glad I didn't get any insulating base layers as some sales dudes recommended. This jacket and the thin baselayer kept me toasty the whole trip. Many times we got on the gondola I had to take the jacket off. The 'light fleece insulation' is VERY VERY light, so don't be confused... I would say there might be a millimeter of fleece like material, and definitely wouldn't consider it to be 'insulation.'
This jacket repels water like a champ (obviously), and despite taking a good number of spills and a few trip through the trees, I can find no signs of wear so far. I love the giant front pockets, and the internal pocket is the perfect place to put your music player and run your headphones out of the neck. The powder skirt worked as intended (on the two days it...). The hood fit closely around my helmet, but was in no way restricting.
As everyone knows about this jacket, it fits a bit big compared to the other jackets I tried on. I find myself very curious about sizing down to a medium (sorry Backcountry!), as I think it looks much to big in any stance besides ski position... I guess I'll just have to stop by a local shop and try a small on first...

Bottom line: I would buy this jacket again; I will definitely highly consider buying other Arc'teryx products despite the prices; Consider sizing down in this jacket.
Downside: My girlfriend is now convinced that she needs an Arc'teryx jacket :-\

Comfortable

Spyder Propulsion Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 17, 2012

I'll start by apologizing to Spyder for the 3 stars. I can't completely blame the pants, as I am sure there was user misuse involved. Moving on...
These pants are very comfortable and kept me perfectly warm in 15-30 degree, windy, stormy conditions with only a 200 weight icebreaker legging on underneath. Pockets were easy to get to and in all the right places. My problem with these pants is that the cuff guard is not nearly long enough. My first day of attempting jumps and drops led to an abundance of cuts through the pant legs. My user error here is that, in hindsight, these pants are probably made more for the groomer/cruiser. Bottom line, if you're trying to be a little more aggressive with your skiing, go with a pant with a much larger cuff guard...

Pretty good

VonZipper Skylab Goggle

Rating for this product: 4 January 17, 2012

Got the Skylabs in Shift Into Neutral for my trip to Utah this year.
I wore these with a Large Giro Revolver and there wasn't too much Gaper gapping, but I would have to check myself and adjust every now and again.
These goggles did a pretty good job against fogging, but they did a few times. First powder morning of the trip I exhaled and the fog froze to the inside of the lens. That only happened once, and after that they did the job pretty well. My buddy had the Oakley Airbrakes, which I turned out to be pretty jealous of...
For $80, I would say these goggles got the job done very well. Whenever I have some spare change for some top of the line Oakleys I'll probably go with that...

Toasty!

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2012

These gloves were awesome for my trip to Utah. Gore-Tex never let any water in, and the times snow would fall in when I took them off, the melt would evaporate surprisingly quickly. Hands were only cold for about 30 minutes of 6 full days of skiing. The palm and finger leather held up really well against my edges. Used the sizing guide on the Hestra website and the gloves fit rather well.
The only thing I don't quite understand is that these these gloves don't have a removable liner... Seems like they could have benefited from being able to take them out to wash sweat off and such.

Hestra XCRs (Middle), and Hestra Heli (Right)
I would definitely buy these gloves again.

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

December 30, 2011

Just got my XCRs from BC last night, and the package came with a sample of the Hestra branded leather balm. On that sample and on the website, Hestra recommends to 'Grease the leather regularly,' but doesn't mention anything about greasing them before first time use... I'm assuming that you don't have to if they didn't mention it, but I thought I would throw the question out to the community.
Thanks guys.
