Giordana Silverline Bib Knicker - Men's

March 23, 2009

These definitely have a chamois, you can see the stitching in the picture....and I know they have a chamois. Maybe Toby meant to review another bib knicker.

Six Six One Pro Bravo Helmet

March 19, 2009

I've never actually tried, but I think you could creatively attach a head lamp to the vents in the visor. Visors are replaceable and relatively cheap, so even if you had to modify it you could get a freshy for non night riding.

Cutter Transition Shock Pump

March 18, 2009

Uuhhh...I dunno if that's the direction I'd go. You could walk to an air compressor from the moon faster than pumping a tire up with this. It will thread on to Schrader valves, but you'd need an adapter for presta valves. Remember, after you fix a flat, take the extra time to put the correct pressure in the tire or you'll probably be fixing another flat. Slow down to speed up.....

Northwave Bike Raptor SBS Bike Shoes - Men's DO NOT USE

March 16, 2009

Northwave sizes sorta vary from year to year, but for 09 they equate a 44 to a US Men's 11. Others have found sizing down a half size or so to be a good way to go with this brand's current fit. Maybe you should get a couple sizes and return the one that doesn't fit. KC

Shimano America Shimano LX Dual Control Lever, Caliper & Rotor Kit - Hydraulic - REAR

February 27, 2009

Most of the newer frames have the tabs so disk brakes can be installed, so depending on your bike you should be able to.Like Chris said, you'll need some disc mounts on your frame and fork. You also need hubs that are disc compatible and if you'll be using the rotors that are included with this set, you'll need hubs that accommodates center lock rotors. KC

Shimano America Shimano LX Dual Control Lever, Caliper & Rotor Kit - Hydraulic - FRONT

February 26, 2009

You can go that route, or you could just use a similar rotor from another brand. That would be way cheaper than buying a new wheel or rebuilding with a new hub...unless you can build wheels, and even then. In terms of mounts, are you referring to the fork/caliper mount? In that case there are some different designs, Post Mount or International Standard, yours is probably IS type but you'd want to confirm that.

Hutchinson Piranha Tubeless Light Mountain Bike Tire

February 25, 2009

Not unless you intentionally ride on tacks. Tubeless tires are very durable, don't get pinch flats, and are often filled with that gel stuff that seals punctures for you.I agree with Angus. I've found that even when a tubeless tire gets punctured, it "leaks" rather than "pops" as a tube does. I'll take a leak over a pop any day! Add some Stan's or other tire sealant to the equation and you almost completely negate the need to remove the tire from the rim..except to replace it.

Shimano America Dura-Ace 7801 STI Levers - Double

February 20, 2009

Yep! They are more than shift levers, but precision instruments made to last a lifetime. Typically you get what you pay for. If you want some of the best shifting available on a road bike, this is it. Those who would benefit from the use of these levers would never question why they cost this much. You get the brake levers too! KC

Giro Animas Helmet

February 17, 2009

I don't have this exact model, but I love my Giro helmet. I use it for the road and for off-road and it works great for both.I'm not sure the red/white flames would work on the road, what would you wear with it? ok..ok...I guess every color of this helmet would transition between road and mountain flawlessly. The visor even detaches for getting the most out of the Animas helmet's aerodynamics. KC

The visor is very much removable. I wouldn't pop it in and out every day (you might break one of the tabs), but you can definitely take it off every now and then.My visors always break off anyway. Gotta keep my face out of the dirt.

No more Helly Hansen for me

Helly Hansen Montreal Down Jacket - Men's

Helly Hansen Montreal Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 2, 2009

Once upon a time, I owned the best technical down jacket of all time and it was Helly Hansen. The jacket had everything that I've learned to look for in a down jacket, burly material, burly zippers, mesh pit zips, attached hood, and then some. After 2 seasons or a bit over 200 days of skiing, the main zipper failed and I was forced to send it back to Helly Hansen. They were unable to repair the zipper and I was forced to take my pick from their newer puffy coats. At that point I was psyched to be getting some new gear and picked the new top-of-the-line down jacket.
I got my new jacket, tried it on, put my cell phone in one of the front pockets. As soon as I stuck my hand in the pocket to get my phone out the pocket ripped almost completely off of the jacket! Instead of sending it back right away I skied the rest of the season in it with the pocket flapping around. Near the end of that season the main zipper crapped out and I sent the jacket back to Helly Hansen. This time repaired the jacket. The next ski season came and before too long I had multiple zipper failures and was forced to go buy another jacket to ride in. I sent the busted up jacket back to Helly Hansen yet again.
They offered to fix it, but I wasn't having it. A main zipper failure far from home could be deadly and the jackets track record was lame. For whatever reason, they didn't offer me the high end jackets as a replacement and I was forced to take the Montreal.
The Montreal is warm, really warm. But it lacks anything technical and a stroll up the street can leave you wishing for some core venting. Besides that, the main zipper is a joke and gets stuck almost every time unless you pay extra attention to it. The icing on the cake is the shell material. It is the weakest crap I've ever seen used in clothing. I've had my Montreal for a month or so and have multiple holes in it and the feathers keep pouring out of it. I got one tear from brushing up against a dirty car, I mean this stuff is GARBAGE.
I appreciate the customer service, but I'll be throwing away my month old Montreal jacket and getting something I can depend on, probably not Helly Hansen. KC

DAKINE Bike Bag DO NOT USE

January 19, 2009

Dear SusieSki, did you ever get an answer to your question? I have the same question. Did you buy the Dakine Bike Bag? If so, how did it work for you? Thanks.I love soft cases! I've traveled around the world multiple times with my bike and never had an issue! Here's my theory: Hard cases are too easy to stack. A hard case will end up at the bottom of the pile every time. A soft case is a bit obtuse and doesn't lend itself to neatly stacking luggage on top of it. Even a hard case won't protect your bike against an elephant sitting on it.Besides that, soft cases stuff into the trunk of tiny European cars....try doing that with a hard case. KC

Salomon Scrambler FG TS Winter Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 12, 2009

These boots are comfy, warm, and easy to install which leads to more dog walks for the faithful hound. I bought an 8.5, which is my typical shoe size, and they seem to be extra roomy in the toe box, definitely room for monster thick socks. Moderately warm. Nice nub on back for kickin them off.

Pearl Izumi Quest Mountain Bike Shoe - Men's

January 11, 2009

The cleats are recessed. The cleats are removable. You don't NEED to clip in while pedaling, but typically it's easier to.Now my opinion....From what it sounds like, you may want to try a shoe with a less aggressive tread pattern. There are shoes on the market with a higher degree of walking comfort. They will still offer a recessed cleat, but will probably have a bit softer rubber on the sole and maybe a touch more flex under foot. Forget all of this if you plan on riding off road most of the time. KC
