Skullcandy Lowrider Headphones

Skullcandy Lowrider Headphones

Rating for this product: 2 September 19, 2009

They sound alright, they pack up small, they feel cheap, the cord is short, and when I pull them down onto my neck, the hinge in the middle consistently pulls a hair out. It *only* happens when I pull them down on to my neck, but still, Ouch!

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

September 8, 2009

Note that the XT Wings are wider (at least in the forefoot) than the XA Pro 3D Ultra. The Ultras fit me, but the XT Wings are too wide to get a good trail run out of them (for me.)

La Sportiva Solution Climbing Shoe

August 21, 2009

I wear the same size in my Miura VS's and my Solutions, with both of them fitting relatively aggressively.

Either way, it's unlikely that you need to go down a full size unless your Miura's have a very sloppy fit right now. I'd consider going down a 1/2 size at the most.

Ditched the BD harness, got the Petzl hotness.

Petzl Hirundos Harness - Men's

Petzl Hirundos Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 1, 2009

I *love* this harness. I'm 5'9", 140 pounds, 30" waist, enjoy long walks on the beach and I wear a Medium in the Hirundos (and in the Petzl Sama.)

The Hirundos is basically the Petzl Sama on a diet. Take the Sama, chop down the waist and leg loops, skinny out the belay-loop (while still meeting standard climbing harness strength requirements), skinny out the waist-strap and the speed-buckle, ditch the haul loop (but keep the 4 gear loops) and finally, turn the orange up to 11 and make the silver almost sparkly. Yes, "sparkly."

With that said, I love the Hirundos for everything except hour-long hang-dog or belay session. Its light weight and vented means you really won't notice it on during the day. Standard disclaimer applies: If you have really whopping thighs, then the legloops will be tight for the appropriately sized waist. The solution to that? Get the Adjama. :)

Light, comfortable, functional - Awesome.

Petzl Sama Harness - Men's

Petzl Sama Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 29, 2009

I *love* this harness. I'm 5'9", 140 pounds, 30" waist, enjoy long walks on the beach and I wear a Medium in the Sama (and in the Petzl Hirundos.)

I have this year's Sama and this year's Hirundos. They share the same Frame construction that lightens the harness, keeps things comfortable and provides great ventilation. I got the Sama after I had the Hirundos for a while because I wanted something that would be more comfortable for long project-hangdogging or belaying sessions. It fits that bill perfectly.

My sizing experience echos a lot of people's here: I wear the waist-strap pulled through the speed buckle until the buckle is barely touching the other side of the waist-padding. That way, the harness is symmetrical side to side, so my gearloops aren't shifted to one side at all.

With that fit, the leg loops feel snug when you first pull the harness on, but your awareness of the legloops disappears 2 minutes later (that means they fit perfectly.) If you've got Clydesdale thighs, you'll want to go for the adjustable legloops on the Adjama harness.

I've hangdogged in this, taken big whippers, caught big whippers, belayed someone for 60 minutes on a 9 bolt sport route (looking at you, Andy), worn it all day then gotten half-way back to the car before I remembered I had it on. I *never* got that level of comfort with the Black Diamond harness I used to have, honestly.

Very fiddly and annoying to clip

Wild Country Helium Clean Wire Quickdraw

Wild Country Helium Clean Wire Quickdraw

Rating for this product: 2 May 4, 2009

I really didn't enjoy clipping these draws. They were so light and narrow-profile that they were a pain to use. They were a little harder to pull off a gearloop because they are so spindly. If you should happen to bump the bottom biner when clipping the rope into them, they bounce around a lot more than normal draws. Frustrating.

I see a lot of people here talking about the weight savings, but how much will that affect you, the review-reader? I climb single pitch sport routes, so a little bit of weight savings won't mean squat to me. Unless you're loading up a ton of draws for super long pitches, I doubt the weight savings will mean anything to you either.

Real Carbon, Real Light, Real Sweet.

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2009

Super light, real delicious carbon (not plastic that looks like carbon,) attaches securely with the included bolts and washers, has just enough tension to hold my water bottle securely without making it hard to replace the waterbottle without looking down.

To be honest, I am juuust bike-nerdy enough to disklike the idea of putting an ugly aluminum bottle cage on my beautiful carbon bike.

I'll probably get another one for the same bike when summer rolls around. BOOSH!

My new favorite sport-climbing and bouldering shorts

Blurr Meta Short - Men's

Blurr Meta Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2009

(My prAna Mojos were bumped to second by these shorts.)

They are comfortable with a harness on and are long enough to keep the legs from riding up and looking like a pair of running shorts when you're hangdogging. The size 30 was a perfect fit on my 30 inch waist. The legs come to the middle of my kneecap when I'm standing, and they move well enough that the length is no problem when high-stepping.

The organic cotton + nylon fabric is super comfortable, but I think it will also be more durable than my Mojos, which is a plus.

Black Diamond Chaos Harness

March 18, 2009

It's really a different harness this year. It uses the new thin style waist-belt and leg-loops, similar to the Arcteryx R320 harness that came out in 2008 or so. It's kind of silly that they kept the Chaos name, honestly.

As for reviews, I know it won Rock & Ice magazine's Best In Gear award, so I'd imagine their site would have that review.

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Green Insole

March 9, 2009

Not a question and not strictly accurate either. I jump on skis all the time with cupped insoles, no problems so far.To put it more bluntly: 'kboniface' is completely incorrect. The vast majority of stock ski boot footbeds are flat so they can fit the majority of people's feet without having any high spots (which would cause immediate pain.) Custom ski boot footbeds made by an experienced bootfitter at a ship will *always* rise up to support the natural arch and curves of the foot, including a heelcup. -Phunk

The North Face Elysium Down Jacket - Men's

March 3, 2009

700 is the fill-power, or "quality" of the down, not the quantity. A higher fill number means each ounce of fill has more insulating power. The difference here is that the Nuptse just has more total fill. That makes the Nuptse "puffier" and warmer.

The North Face Elysium Down Jacket - Men's

March 3, 2009

You can machine wash it but use Nikwax down wash. Normal laundry detergents are hydrophilic, meaning they attract water. That will work against the water-repellant nature or coating of any technical outerwear. I generally Nikwax wash my down stuff once or twice a year, depending on how dirty they get.

K2 Apache Crossfire Ski w/ Marker MX 12.0 Binding

February 24, 2009

If you are an upper intermediate to an expert/pro level east coast skier these are about the sweetest things that could ever happen to you. I am one of 5 people at our local club (The CRS&GC) who ski on and swear by them. In the east coast alot of days are full of groomers and ice, and that is where the crossfires are the best. They can carve through ice and turn on a dime with their quick turning radius. They are also excellent in the bumps and in the trees because of that short turning radius, and having a narrow waist helps in the east coast bumps as well. This is in my opinion the number one east coast ski. It can also standup in the powder. I have been out this year on several mornings with 6 plus inches of fresh snow and one morning with 13 inches. These were versatile enough to handle the fresh stuff too, though they were certainly not floating like a west coast style (fatter) ski. I was certainly jealous of my friend's K2 Recon's that day. It must be nice to have a quiver Wiz!They're super sweet. -Phunk

Mirage Recycled is an ultra-lightweight, 100% recycled polyester plain weave with good tear resistance and a super supple hand for packability. This is a breathable, highly wind- and water-resistant fabric. The North Face Solaris Tank - Women's

The North Face Solaris Tank - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 5, 2008

Phunk's girlfriend says: Super flattering cut. Very light material that's comfy on even the hottest days. The fabric actually wicks like they say it will, which prevents a sweaty, clingy back. The only drawback is that the fabric is less "rugged" than some of your more run of the mill fabrics, so keep it away from any velcro stuff in the wash and keep it out of the dryer (just lay it flat and it will dry quickly.) Normally this is a turn-off for me, but this top is worth the little extra effort.

Timbuk2 Commute Messenger-Style Computer Bag

Timbuk2 Commute Messenger-Style Computer Bag

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2006

The Timbuk2 Messenger-Style Computer Bag is roomy enough to hold my oversized laptop, with plenty of space leftover for notebooks, etc. The cell phone pockets on the sides are surprisingly secure, and keep the phone handy enough to pull out and answer on the fly. The strap adjusts really well, but I would recommend also buying the shoulder strap as an upgrade, as it's tough to position so that none of the buckles dig into your front, even when worn sling-style. Also, the padding on the back of the bag is exellent as it keeps stray books from shifting and poking you while riding. Buttes!

The North Face DIAD Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 1, 2006

This jacket is REALLY nice. It’s definitely not cheap, but so lightweight that it feels like there is a water repelling force-field around you. The orange is a great color. I did note the lack of hand pockets, but it was actually kind of nice because I usually put so much crap in those pockets they're annoying and jingly. The one pocket is enough for a few bucks and keys if necessary.

Black Diamond Focus AL Harness

Black Diamond Focus AL Harness

Rating for this product: 3 June 1, 2006

This harness is... OK. The waist-belt was comfortable enough while belaying, but always rode up in a weird way when I was hanging on the rope.

The padded leg-loops always rubbed against each other and made me walk a little bit bow-legged to minimize that. I never needed to adjust the adjustable leg-loops, so that's just more junk to worry about.

I've also come to dislike the gear loops that flip up when not in use. It can make them hard to clip gear into if your shirt is any less than 100% tucked into the waist.

I'm updating this review after owning a Petzl Sama and giving it 5 stars of love. The Petzl is a superior harness in terms of comfort, lightweight, fit and function.

La Sportiva Cliff Rock Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Cliff Rock Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 June 1, 2006

Just started climbing real rock this year in Utah, and I'm really happy with these shoes. The fit is great. They feel very locked on to my feet from heel to toe. Sticky rubber that looks like it's going to last, too.

Laces let me tighten up the toebox a little bit on my left foot (which is smaller than my right) too, which is a bonus.

If I had to do it over again, I'd still get these shoes. I think that says it all.

Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet

Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 June 1, 2006

I wear a helmet skiing, so why not climbing, right?

The half-dome feels good when it's on, because you don't notice it when it's on. It doesn't feel hot at all, because it's suspended off your head kind of like a hardhat.

The size adjuster thing works really well. However, I'm deducting a point because the chin strap is a little finicky, and it also loses its adjustment if you strap the helmet to your pack for the approach.

Carries light and packs down well, I dig it!

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 August 15, 2005

The first thing I noticed about the Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag I had just purchased was how incredibly light it was, a measly 1lb 5oz. Upon receiving my bag from the nice deliveryman I was wondering if anything were even in the box it was so light. The stuff size is quite small as well, about the size of a football. The first trip with this bag was spent in Utah's Uinta Mountains on a trek to summit Kings Peak. The nights were cold, below the 30F rating on the bag, and I stayed plenty warm. Only complaints would be that the zipper is only half-length which can make it difficult to get in and out of. I guess that saves some weight. Other than that it's a great bag and I'm happy with the purchase and the weight off my back.
