Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp

Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 February 14, 2012

Works just fine, great given the cost. Mostly use for early morning runs in the winter when the days are short.

First time with tunes on the hill

Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Helmet Audio Kit

Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Helmet Audio Kit

Rating for this product: 4 February 14, 2012

I installed these in my Variant Brim over my last ski trip, and used them to play back songs from my iPhone. Good idea, imperfect execution tho:

Pro's -
1) Sounds pretty good, surprisingly good even. Balanced, with a lot more bottom end than I expected.
2) Quick disconnect is really nice when stopping for a beer / snack / snog.
3) Simple controls work well, even in gloved hands

Con's -
1) The added bulk in the Variant's ear pad / liner makes the helmet pinch my ears slightly. Not enough to require a change of helmet or audio system, but enough to make me "annoyed"
2) The button doesn't answer iPhone calls (although it does work as a speaker / mic once you answer the phone). This means that a ringing phone requires a dive into the layers to press "answer." Not a big problem, as when I am skiing, I don't like to answer the #$%$ phone... only J#$k@#$es do that ;-)

Overall, totally loved it. The ease of control meant I could rip with my tunes... and still convince my wife I was paying attention to her!

As good as I've found

Smith Phenom Goggle

Smith Phenom Goggle

Rating for this product: 4 February 14, 2012

Truly a comfortable, nice goggle. Lot's of lens options. I've never had it fog. Ever. Works well with my Helmet (smith variant brim.. of course, that only makes sense, right?). Downside? Not really easy to change lenses.. the mechanism isn't awesome.

Crazy fun ski

Rossignol S3 Ski

Rossignol S3 Ski

Rating for this product: 4 February 14, 2012

Turns like crazy, ski's a bit short (go a bit longer than you'd expect.. tip and tail rocker and all that). Works well on groomed stuff and okay in the crud. Not sure I buy that the tip shape helps with flotation, but it works well enough. Confidence inspiring most of the time.

Playful ski

Volkl Bridge Alpine Ski

Volkl Bridge Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 February 14, 2012

Turn's fast and hard, like's to play around a lot. Prefer's to stay on edge as opposed to run flat and hard. Not wide enough to float, but works out just fine most of the time. Inspire's confidence and likes all the turn shapes. Nice ski

Game Changer

Blizzard Cochise Ski

Blizzard Cochise Ski

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2012

Ski's on hardpack like a normal, sidecut, cambered, ski. Love's to rip and turn hard. Then, in the deeps fluffly stuff, it ski's like a big powder board. Works in moguls pretty well to. Overall, I am totally in love.

Belt + Buckle = Pants stay up

DAKINE Rail Belt

DAKINE Rail Belt

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2012

Cheap. Like as cheap as a belt can get. Works well enough to hold up the pants. Oh yeah, and it pops the tops on frosty cool ones, making it extra awesome.

magnificent layer

MontBell Ex Light Down Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ex Light Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2012

I love this thing. Best midlayer I've ever worn. Warm enough on it's own to wander around Telluride at night in February (you might need to stop into the Last Dollar for a warm up.. but hey.. it's a down sweater!), and just perfect under a shell. Dries quickly, and holds it's loft well. The fabric is delicate, but then again, that's why it is so light and packs up so small.... 100 percent recommended. Fits fairly trim (I am 5'-10", 185 lbs and the medium is just barely big enough)

Good Gator

Ibex Neck Gaiter

Ibex Neck Gaiter

Rating for this product: 4 February 13, 2012

Things I love - 1) the fabric is awesome, wicks moisture, is warm, soft and comfortable. 2) The fit is snug and the craftsmanship is good.

Things I don't love 1) Why is there a tag on the seam right where you would want to wear it? How about printing on the inside like others do?

Great gator overall (once I removed the tag with a sharp knife and a little patience.

NICE BASE (layer that is)

Patagonia Capilene 2 Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 2 Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2012

This is my preferred base layer for skiing. Comfortable, wicks moisture well, and the zip let's you cool off quickly when you are hiking up Palmyra peak or to the Gold Hill chutes. If you run cold (I run warm), you should definitely consider the Capilene 3 midweight as a base layer.

Flexile base layer

Patagonia Capilene 2 Bottom - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 2 Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2012

Works well for most cold aerobic activities, alpine skiing, etc. I prefer a thin layer under a shell, but I run pretty warm, so you may want to try the Cap 3 midweights if you run cold. Fabric is nice to the touch, itch free. Waistband is comfortable and doesn't dig or anything odd. Washes up really well and doesn't seem to hold odors. Super excellent base layer!

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2012

Great socks. Smartwool socks are 100% itch free, stretch in all the right ways, do not bunch or sag, and wear fairly long. These are working really well for my Alpine endeavors. They keep my feet as toasty as can be.

Truly the perfect size for Telluride. Big enough for a water, snacks, a layer, and ski's when you are hiking up Palmyra peak. Small enough to ride up the lifts without taking it off.

Great "work style" glove

Stoic The Duke Glove

Stoic The Duke Glove

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2012

After a week skiing in Telluride, these have worn in nicely and I am completely in love. Worked absolutely fabulously. Not the warmest gloves, on a storm day, you probably do want some mitts, but for a nice day, they are perfect. Use the Nikwax leather creme and they keep getting better!
