Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

March 23, 2012

This picture is actually for the Cosmic 4Ds. They're similar but not exactly the same boot. These boots are attached about 3/4 of the way up. To mid ankle but not all the way to the upper part of the boot.

Finally a perfect jacket

Mountain Hardwear Trice Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Trice Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2012

I love this jacket. I don't require a hood that fits over a helmet, but I do want a jacket that breathes well, will keep me dry no matter what, and is durable. This jacket finally fits that description. I'm 5'8", 150 lbs, and the small fits quite well.

The shell is super tough, and although I haven't abused it much, I have no doubt that it can take anything that I throw at it. The fit is a little more boxy, but it works well for layering, much better than the Drystein.

Breathability is PHENOMENAL. I've owned Gore-Tex, Pertex and eVent products, and this is better than anything I've ever used. Waterproofing is also as good as or better than any of those.

The only slight issues I have are the sleeve length is at the very edge of being too short, and the pockets aren't in the best position. They tried to put the pockets high enough that they wouldn't be blocked by a hip-belt, but they're still about 1/3 covered. No too big of a deal since they have a napoleon pocket, but just a minor concern.

Mountain Hardwear Gravitor Insulated Jacket - Men's

January 26, 2012

I just purchased this jacket to replace my old gravitor with conduit. I can definitely attest to the fact that the DryQ is significantly better in both waterproofing and breathability. Not that conduit was bad, but this is just incredible. This is the new version on here, and on steepandcheap lately (where I got mine). Also just realized moments ago that this is not called "gravitator"

Nice Fleece Hoodie

Outdoor Research Haven Full-Zip Hoodie - Men's

Outdoor Research Haven Full-Zip Hoodie - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 24, 2012

I got a small. I'm 5'8", but with a slightly longer torso, 155 lbs, 30-31 waist, and about 39 chest. The small fits fantastically, snug, but with enough room for a warm base layer if I want. The jacket is great: very warm, light, durable, looks good, comfortable. Since it's OR, it comes with a lifetime warranty too, which is always great in case you run into trouble later on.

The only problem I think is the hood, it's a little bit awkward. It's very warm and functional, but looks-wise very tight fitting and weird when up. I suppose this may be so you can fit a helmet over it, I'm not sure. I'm not really concerned with looks in a jacket that I buy for function not fashion, but it's just a small note. It's also more expensive than it really should be for a fleece jacket, but you could say that about all high quality fleece jackets, and I got this one for a great deal on S&C.

Fantastic lightweight jacket

Rab Momentum Jacket - Men's

Rab Momentum Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 28, 2011

My first eVent item, and it's incredible, I'll never go back to anything else. Ultra waterproof, ultra breathable. The only slight issue I have is with the fit of the neck. It's a little too big, and rain can come in there if it's coming down hard. I guess this is probably to allow for neck layers underneath, but I think it's too much. The jacket is incredibly light weight but still feels very durable. I haven't had much chance to test out the durability, but it's holding up phenomenally so far. Sizing is good for me. I'm 5'8" 155 lbs and the medium fits extremely well with some layers under it. A little larger than I would like as purely a rain jacket in summer probably, but it will be fine.

Great rain pants for the $

Outdoor Research Revel Pant - Men's

Outdoor Research Revel Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 17, 2011

I got these for $67 on here and they're fantastic pants for that price. I am 5'8" and about 155 lbs and the small fits quite well. It could probably be slightly larger in the waist, but if I went a size up I would sacrifice the fantastic fit of the rest of the pant.
Cons:

The side zips are kind of bulky and fabric-flap instead of taped. This is a little annoying as it makes them stick out and bulk up in an awkward way. This is particularly noticeable at the knees. They haven't leaked yet though, which is what really matters. It's just a bit of extra weight and mildly awkward looking.

Pros:
-The waterproofing and breathability has been fantastic so far. No downpours to test in, but I've done a lot of rainy hiking in Olympic Nat'l Park and haven't been wet at all during mild rain and snow. No clamminess at all while wearing them. Sitting down on wet ground poses no problems.
-Durable feel so far, haven't had to test it out much in this area yet though.
-The back pocket for stowing is very handy. Comes with a small carabiner loop built in.

I would definitely recommend them at a sale price, but for $140 you could probably do better.
