  • Stomping Grounds:

Oslo, Norway - often seen in the Arctic, aka Svalbard
  • Bio:

Being outdoors for more than just a couple of days is what I love the most. Going somewhere I am not likely to run into crowds of people and having to work hard to get there is what makes it all worth while. I am no ex-special forces enjoying torturing my body but I think being outdoors should be bit of a struggle but never more than it is possible to enjoy it.
This is why I always seem to end up close to the North pole, Svalbard. Midnight sun in the summer and pitch dark in the winter. Beautiful scenery and no marked trails. It all adds to the adventure.

Great boots - but leaks

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 July 17, 2011

I have two pairs of these boots and I love to wear them whenever I go out. They have a great fit (I have them in Wide) the are very durable and they are relatively lightweight.
Both my pairs seem to leak and I believe the reason is water collecting between the suede and the membrane. This causes the water from the outside to heat up and with a gore-tex membrane water passes both ways if it has the same temperature ont he inside and the outside. I always brush dirt off after a trip and always spray them with waterproofing once they have dried up. Water still moves through. Water gathering up is especially visible on the heel. It looks like as if the boot has got a blister on the heel but it is water collected under the suede patch.
Great for short trips but for more than a day in soaky conditions they will not keep you dry.

Wow

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 April 3, 2011

What do i do with all the extra space left in my pack now that I hace chucked away my old sleeping pad?
The reason why I don't give it five out of five is because it still has some way to go before it insulates good enough when sleeping directly on snow. Anyway It still saves weight and space. Get one!
(I used the the extra space for chocolate in case you wondered)

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex Long Mitten

December 24, 2010

No, they are not super warm. I have used them down to - 31* and already at 5* they felt cold when i did not wear an additional pair of liner gloves. They are ok as long as I am on the on the move and use my hands but they are no good alone when I stop for a break. The tightening around the wrists are too wide allowing warm air to escape and it sems to me as the primaloft filling stops just above the wrist leaving a cold spot between the mitt and the jacket.
Bottom line: buy a pair of liner gloves too.
(ps: runs a bit small - just a bit)
I recommend the Norrøna Gore tex shell mitt and their wool liner - Great together and with a shell mitt you can use the principle of layering on your hands as well. This solution also speeds up drying as drying the Narvik mitt is almost hopeless inside a tent in the wintertime.

No disappointment

Rab Neutrino Endurance Down Jacket - Men's

Rab Neutrino Endurance Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 21, 2010

My jacket has followed me to peaks in Nepal, to the arctic tundra and majestic mountains in Norway and never disappointed me. Superb down quality and a down/feather ratio 96/4 which is matched by few others. The Montane North star was mentioned in another review and the ratio on that one is 94/6. The difference is noticeable and one should not only look at the filpower but also the above mentioned ratio. Enough said, the jacket is lightweighted, very compressible and is a display of great craftmanship. It's very comfy and has just the right length if you are in the market for a jacket that fits with a harness or just don't need to cover your rear. When I am not wearing the hood it works as a collar to block out wind and cold. I have had other jackets that are open in the neck area when the hood is hanging down - this is not the case with this jacket. The pockets are located underneath the down filling therefore being good handwarmers
A great buy

Gregory Palisade 80 Backpack - 4699-5370cu in

December 20, 2010

I pack mine in a 110 litre osprey transporter duffel but I sometimes also use a simple bag with roll up closure. I believe some manufacturers keep simple protective bags in their line of accessories- 110 litres is a bit too much but i need the extra length on the zippers to get it all in. Most duffles come with compression straps so does also mine.

Great 3-season tent

NEMO Equipment Inc. Losi 3P Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 December 20, 2010

I own five tents in different sizes and for three and four seasons and this is my best three season tent. Realtively light weight, well ventilated, versatile and SPACIOUS. More than enough headroom for everybody to sit upright and play cards, read a book or just enjoy a cup of coffee when it rains outside. Fits three adults and it still feels like there is room for one more (it just feels like that - four was too much). The walls are almost vertical and everybody inside can enjoy the extra headspace.
The floor is raised on two sides and the rainfly is shortened equally. This gives superb ventilation and virtually no condensation inside the rainfly. On the other hand the raised fly limits the tents use in the winter as snow will blow up under it and give you an igloo feeling as snow fastens to the mesh (some might find that cozy?).
Plenty of pockets for storing stuff and with the additional gear loft you will realize that you need more gear as you have more storage space than gear.
The whole thing comes in a roll-up storage bag that holds everything, also the pegs - no chance you will forget the poles (I once did that with another tent)
With the footprint attached the rainfly can be pitched separately.
If I should wish for something extra it would be a garage option like on the asashi - but I guess leaving that out is all part of some cunning strategy to make me buy the asashi too (I am really, really thinking about it).

Norrøna Trollveggen Dri3 Jacket - Men's

August 14, 2009

I use a size large when buying form arcteryx, TNF, marmot an also when using my trollveggen jacket. When it comes to fit I would not call it roomy. The jacket is cut to be used for climbing. This means you won't find any excess fabric anyywhera as this will hinder sight downwards/upwards when hanging in the wall or being in the way when reaching for the right tool. A tighter fitting jacket will also improve breathability since the fabric will be closer to the body thus creating a bigger difference in temperature alloving more moisture to escape.

Norrøna Trollveggen Dri3 Jacket - Men's

August 14, 2009

This is a shell jacket which means it is not insulated. The jacket, like most others in the same category, are designed to work as an outer barrier shedding water, snow and wind. In short: this is an all year /all weather jacket. I love the versatility this kind of jacket offers. I can add or remove layers according to temperature and the jacket itself protects from the elements.

Salomon Fast Tank - Men's

Salomon Fast Tank - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 July 18, 2006

A good, lightweight, moisture wicking shirt but you might want to reconsider unless your head circimference is more than 20 inches. I bought a size large and I really have to work hard to get my head through when I put it on and take it off. My head size i 7 3/8in. I give it a plus for being lightweight and a big minus for the non-elastic head opening.
