Emerson Takahashi's So you're starting to climb, eh?
Created October 1, 2011
Essentials for the budding sport climber.
Just because you're starting, doesn't mean you shouldn't be equipped with great gear.
Here's why I chose these products-
*Black Diamond PosiWire Quickpack- Keylock biners so they never catch on the bolt hanger or your harness, which can get super annoying.
*BD Aspect Harness- Great, well padded harness. Lots of gear loops, great(comfortable) for belaying your friends
*BD Big Air package- Great value for a good locking biner and belay device. Don't waste money on an auto-locking belay device- ATC is oldskool and will teach you how to belay CORRECTLY. (Then you can get your shiny Grigri.)
*Petzl Elios Helmet- Get a helmet. You just need one. Period.
*Beal Edlinger 10.2mm rope- Thick rope for withstanding lots of top roping.
*Metolius Ropemaster Bag- Take care of your rope if you don't like being broken. This bag comes with a large tarp to throw your rope down on when you belay.- Helpful Votes: 0 Yes |

Metolius Sketch Crash Pad
January 31, 2012
I also disagree with Elise. This is a SMALL pad. I would say that a pad like this only has a few good applications:
- sit starts on boulder problems where you need a thinner pad so you can get on foot holds down low
- covering cracks between bigger crashpads so you have less chance of spraining an ankle or something from landing with your foot between pads
- sport climbing- a lot of sport routes now have a pretty sketchy start to the first bolt, and it's nice to have a little something underneath in case you take a couple falls before the first bolt
For beginners I suggest a bigger pad that will be more versatile, so you can land on it from 10+ ft and not break your ankle

It depends mostly on weight, and not height. The Size chart is located right beneath the drop down menu below the price.

Salomon Elite 6 Grip Ski
January 18, 2012
Hey Martin,
unfortunately, it doesn't look like backcountry has any NNN classic bindings in stock, just SNS. If you don't already have NNN boots, I'd say going with the SNS bindings will be just as good.
Check out the Atomic Pilot Sport bindings - http://www.backcountry.com/atomic-pilot-sport-classic-ski-bi
Those are a great binding for casual classic skiing on trails, and the new Pilot system offers better stability, you just have to be sure to get a pair of Pilot SNS boots, like the Solomon Escape 7 - http://www.backcountry.com/salomon-escape-7-pilot-cf-ski-boo

Salomon Escape 7 Pilot CF Ski Boot - Men's
January 18, 2012
Generally, Atomic and Salomon will be SNS, while Rossy, Fischer, and Alpina will be NNN.
Within the NNN and SNS, there's still things that won't work with each other. Backcountry touring boots will have a bigger pin, that won't fit into normal skate/classic bindings. And with SNS bindings, you can't use the OLDER Profil boots on the newer Pilot bindings, however a Pilot boot CAN be used with the old Profil bindings.
IN otherwords, this boot is backwards compatible with older SNS bindings, but not the other way around.

Spyder Verbier Hybrid Shell Jacket - Men's
January 17, 2012
This jacket is just a shell. With its 20,000 mm waterproof rating, you can use it for any type of weather nature throws at you, you just will have to layer appropriately.
i.e. If it's SUPER cold out, wear a really thick middle layer (I use my Mountain Hardwear Monkeyman 1/4 zip) and if it's warm maybe just a long sleeve shirt of a light sweater

The North Face Boundary Triclimate Jacket - Women's
January 4, 2012
Yes, it is! But don't use regular detergent!! The soap gets inside the coat and gets it all gummed up. Use something like-

and it will restore the water repellency as well!

Backcountry.com Tour Pant SE - Men's

They're not insulated or anything, so any heat you'll be feeling will have to be generated by yourself. As long as you're moving around and being active in the snow, you'll be fine.
