GoLite Jam 2 Pack - 3100cu in

June 22, 2009

hey tom, you can easily fit a nalgene bottle in the side pockets- i do however recommend using a bladder to use in the pockets instead of a bottle because once it is empty, you can fold it down rather than having a bottle take up space and weight.

Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter

Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 4 June 8, 2009

I bought this filter when it was a PUR. It has done me well in the past and i am glad to have purchased it. I never experienced any clogging and it was easy enough to field maintain. I would recommend it as it is durable and the attachment works with a variety of tops. It is a bit on the heavy side and if you are weight conscious then this is not the water treatment system for you. I would recommend aqua mira. Anything with moving parts is bound to add a little bit of risk. great value for a nice filter.

Good Stuff

MSR Dromedary Bags

MSR Dromedary Bags

Rating for this product: 5 June 8, 2009

I have had two sizes of the dromedary for a number of years and am very impressed with the durability and functionability of it. When not in use it rolls up nicely and can be stuffed in your pack and not take up too much room- downside is that it is a bit on the heavy side. Pros are that this is a very versatile piece of equipment- you are able to use it as for water storage, a water bladder, fill it up and use it as a weight or a pillow, it can be used as a hydration system- fill it with snow or sand. The possibilities are endless. Cheap and durable!

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

May 22, 2009

warmth, style and plushiness i would give it a 9. Durability i would give it a 6-7, if you wear this thing out the plushiness loses loft and leaves ugly flat patches- especially on the elbows and once you wash it, it is a whole new- not so soft- jacket. I wore mine to death and it is still good as a beater jacket, be prepared to buy more than one if you want it to last.

there really isnt a specific shell designed for the monkeyman, the jacket is designed to work with a variety of shells as a layer underneath- it does not zip in at all. You can find nice mountain hardwear shells if this is your brand.

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

May 22, 2009

It really just depends on your preference. I have both versions and I am finding that the pullover i tend to use more like a shirt and wear it to death and the jacket i use as a jacket to go over clothing. I personally like the jacket as it is easy on easy off for when you need to shed or add layers quickly, the pullover is nice as well with the thumb holes.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 May 20, 2009

I bought this jacket at a fathers day sale a few years back and it straight up sucks. I purchased it because of its good reputation and lightweight, but the jacket failed to live up to the hype. Every single time i wore the jacket in the rain, i was soaked underneath in a matter of minutes. The jacket gets wet and sticks to your arms allowing water to absorb through the jacket. complete crap and i would not purchase Marmot again.

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Men's

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 20, 2009

I have been impressed with this jacket since i got it because it seems to have grown out of what TNF has been lacking- more stylish clothing= less quality gear. This is the best of both worlds- very stylish but very functional. The only con is that you are now just another TNF posterchild- every other person on the street is either wearing this jacket or the Denali fleece.

Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 20, 2009

A nice jacket that can be used in a layering system pretty effectively. However, this is not the jacket to wear everyday as i would have liked. The wind cuts right through like your wearing nothing at all. Nice and fashionable but i would have went for another stand alone fleece instead of just a layer.

Ex Officio Nio Amphi Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 20, 2009

These pants are exclusively my backcountry canoeing pants. With paddling areas like the Boundary Waters you need to always wear long pants due to the number of potrages and not to mention the sun reflecting off of the water like a mirror baking you alive. These pants have done me well both dry and wet and easily convertable when i am in camp. highly recommend and will buy another pair when mine die. have fun with it!

Not too shabby

GoLite Wisp Wind Shirt - Men's

GoLite Wisp Wind Shirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 18, 2009

The GoLite Wisp shirt is a great layer for a windy day. It's so light and I love the bright colors. The fabric has a bit of shine to it - really eye-catching. The material is not stretchy or clingy, just light and airy. It has a drawcord at the waist and elastic at the sleeves to keep wind out. No drawcord at the neck, which is cut roomy. That's nice if you are wearing multiple zip-up layers that all bulk up at the neck. This shirt definitely won't choke you, even if you're wearing a pack. It is wind and rain resistant but not windproof nor rainproof, so I wouldn't have it as my only outer layer on an outdoor trip where there is a risk of hypothermia if I'm wet. One caution: grease stains really show on this fabric and are impossible to remove. The only con is that the fabric is so light that the collar isn't heavy enough to lay flat when the zipper is open.

Gregory Palisade 80 Backpack - 4699-5370cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 17, 2009

This is a beast of a pack- this is my expedition pack only. for anything under a week or even two, there is no reason to get a pack that is 6 pounds by itself! but if you are a trip leader and need to carry some extra gear (food, clothes, fuel, etc) this pack is for you- very water resitant, durable, and the padding is great- again a huge pack that is not for everyone and most likely would be more of a bother for anything under two weeks. love the angled side pockets for water bottles and the removable lid. have fun!

Rating for this product: 4 May 17, 2009

Nice tent for the price and weight. i have had two of these and they have never failed me- been in torrential downpours and crazy wind. you need to make sure you stake down the corners before raising the tent to assure it is taught. good ventilation and the vestibule holds my pack, shoes and more. for being a one person, it is fairly large and have on occasion gotten my wife in with me. a little tight but not complaining. enjoy!

Ive had this jacket for awhile and i purchased it for several reasons including its lightweight and wind stopping ability. The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 17, 2009

This was one of the first fleece's i ever owned and it was adequate for the job. as TNF grew over the years, the quality of this jacket has decreased so the "style" factor can increase making it affordable to everyone (which is nice)but resulted in TNF more interested in getting their name out instead of quality jackets. This jacket is more of a "around town" jacket and not recommended for backcountry adventures as it is super heavy and not built to quality.

CamelBak Omega HydroTanium Hydration Reservoir

CamelBak Omega HydroTanium Hydration Reservoir

Rating for this product: 1 May 15, 2009

I have had several camelbak's and was a fan, but my last trip (70-mile UL Solo) has taught me to hate camelbak and become a Platy fan from now on. In my three day trek, the hose pulled away from the bladder 4 times letting 3 liters of water fill the bottom of my pack soaking all of my gear. i could not see how this would happen 4 times, i did nothing different in packing than i always have done in the past- even when the tube was attached, if slight pressure was put on the bladder, water still leaked from the bottom. Maybe this is due to overuse of the bladder but i have never once ever had a drop of water come out of my platy. think twice before purchasing this- it will make your life miserable.

This is my third Monkey Man and definitely not my last. The high warmth to weight ratio is unbeatable. It is stylish and always gets the ladies attention as they want to feel the jacket. It is a great 4 season fleece- be careful when washing, you could end up with a pile of monkey mess.

Salomon will replace the laces for you as well- you can find their contact on the website. Laces tend to fray and break after abuse to the shoes.

I am a lifelong Salomon supporter- this shoe is a testament to the quality of Salomon. Very comfy trail runner and a perfect shoe for fastbacking/ultralight backpacking. Breathable, light and the quicklace system is killer- works great with gaitors.

Great frameless pack for ultralight backpacking/fastpacking. Plenty of room and very durable for being so light weight. I recommend this pack for anyone who is looking for a nice lengthy hike. If you are looking for an all around backpack to carry more than about 25 pounds, check out the Golite Pinnacle. Just finished a 4 day, 70 mile trip with nothing but praises, im officially Jammin'
