La Sportiva Miura VS Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe - Women's

April 17, 2012

The thing about climbing shoes...I always try them on. ALWAYS. Each one is slightly different. The fit on climbing shoes is the most important factor. If at all possible I would suggest finding this shoe IRL and trying it on. That way you save money on shipping and handling etc.etc..

Osprey Packs Farpoint 55 Pack - 3173-3356cu in

April 3, 2012

That depends on how you pack. For me it would be extremely excessive. For international travel I try to fit everything I need in one carry-on bag to ensure that I would have any problems taking various other modes of transport. You may pack fairly heavy, with a new change of clothes for everyday (or roughly that) in which case this bag would be about the right size for that kind of thing.

Not to mention this is quite a luxurious bag. Nice choice.

Hope this answer was helpful :D

Mountain Hardwear Scrambler TRL 30 Backpack - 1810cu in

April 1, 2012

It has side "bottle" pockets. It doesn't have a slit for a hydration port but I have one or two bags with that problem and it has never prevented me from using my water bag. I just run the hose around the outer side of the top, or cut a little hole with a knife. I can understand not wanting to cut your bag, to each their own.

I hope this helped you!

Bern Baker Hard Hat w/Knit Liner

March 30, 2012

When discussing a "hit" in terms of taking a blow you have two basic types: high impact (read: catastrophic), low impact (read: concussion). All helmets are expected to meet the safety requirements for a high impact hit, this helmet is no exception. Many helmets, like for example, a normal bike helmet, do not protect against low impact hits. So, when you take a decent blow to the head in a helmet that does not meet low impact standards your chances of a concussion are significant.

This helmet is meant to protect against both high, AND low impact hits. It does so with the use of special foam padding. Most popular winter helmets meet these requirements.

Hope this was helpful to you :D

Teva Reforge Ion Mask Shoe - Men's

March 28, 2012

There is a review on Amazon, it reads:

Title: Light and comfortable

"I purchased these shoes because I love Teva sandals and I wanted something that would be as comfortable and as durable in the form of a shoe. The main attraction to these shoes was the fact they are water proof. I have stepped in a few puddles with them and so far so good, unlike my old sneakers, my socks stayed dry.

The first time putting them on they felt very snug, and after a few hours on my feet, my toes were becoming numb. I re-laced them while they were on my feet and the circulation returned. The size of shoe I ordered is correct, they are just a foot hugging shoe, and are very stiff out of the box. Over all comfort is exceptional.

These shoes breath extremely well, but in cold weather, expect to feel every breeze that passes on your feet. Definitely a warm weather shoe."

Here is the link to that review : ( http://www.amazon.com/Teva-Reforge-Ion-Mask-Hiking-Black/dp/B0055AUMK8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332958772&sr=8-1 )

Might be two things:

One, this is not entirely intentional, it is just a product of how the kayak left the mold it was formed in.

La Sportiva Logo Chalk Bag

La Sportiva Logo Chalk Bag

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2012

One thing that is not mentioned about this bag, is that it comes with a bag belt. That is, it comes with it's own small, self clipping, bag belt so that you can wear the bag around your waist and switch it's position on your body from behind to the side or the front with a flick of your arm. This is very helpful in case you need to have your back to the wall and you don't want your chalk bag getting in the way of your butt.

Great, high quality bag, no frills, no spills.

Mammut Ophira 3 Slide Harness - Women's

Mammut Ophira 3 Slide Harness - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2012

Pretty much the exact same harness as the men's Ophir with a one small difference: you can tighten the leg loops. A self cinching draw has been added to the leg loops on this harness. Other than that, same as the Ophir. That is to say this harness is extremely comfortable, user friendly, and high quality. It fits true to measurements and makes the wife feel happy about climbing safely.

Would definitely recommend.

Mammut Ophir Harness - Men's

Mammut Ophir Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2012

Just started climbing at my local rock gym (Source, in Vancouver, WA) and bought this bad boy as a cheap, starter harness. It turns out, there is nothing cheap about it; it is solid in every way, comfortable, and extremely user friendly (no fitting guessing games).

There is only one, self cinching buckle to tighten at the waist, no doubling back on it because it is self-cinching. The legs are kept semi-tight by some strong elastic in a one-size-fits-all kind of way. The four gear loops are super accessible on the wall.

Overall, very safe, comfortable and high quality.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 3, 2011

This is a great Jacket for the Northwest. Warm, snuggly fleece, tough as nails construction. It breaths well and sheds my sweat great. I wear a large (5'10'' 205 lbs muscular build) and the sleeves are about an inch too long...other than the sleeves it fits extremely well. If its particularly cold out I throw on my Arc'teryx Accelero Jacket underneath this Gamma and that seems to be a pair that can't be beat. I work for the Forest Service maintaining trails and this puppy stands up to hard labor like a champ.

Excellent jac. I found mine on Ebay for 129$...check that out if you can.

I am 205 lbs and 5'10'' with a muscular build. I wear a Large and it fits me like a glove (the sleeves are a bit long). My brother is 6' 205 lbs with a extremely muscular build and it fits him quite well. If you have a little extra weight in the mid section I would go for the XL. If you are fairly trim around the tummy I would go for the Large.

MSR, I love you.

No more pumping, easy to backflow. Lots of water while I go do other things. Save your arm and be the savior of your friends. Everyone you camp with will want one of these puppies after their trip with you. Not recommended for very silty/dusty water as it is going to take you a long time to backflush and *may* cost you the price of a new filter (haven't tried this, but the microfilaments are just too tiny for silt).

I had to go to a local shop to have it fitted properly, it seemed as though there were several options as far as torso length and should straps were concerned; all of which were switch-out-able. Tough as nails and built to last. Osprey won't let you down. Best of all, it's well balanced as long as you pack it with the heaviest stuff at the small of your back.

Fully recommend.

This will keep you warm, fairly comfortable, and happy on the ground or in a hammock. Its not terribly wide so if your real big you will slip off it now and then. I'm 5'9 205 with wide shoulders and this is my go to camping pad. It's light and it takes punishment well.

MSR MiniWorks Ex Water Filter

MSR MiniWorks Ex Water Filter

Rating for this product: 5 August 6, 2011

If you're looking for a pump style filter, this is the industry standard. Easy to clean, simple to tear down, and the only piece you have to worry about is the ceramic element (do not drop naked element). I use it when I am someplace with real silty water (I work around the Mt. Saint Helens blast zone) and I often have to clean it after 2-3 liters, but it just keeps on rocking. If you are in a long term camp trip in a place with fairly non-silty water I would purchase the MSR Autoflow as it requires no pumping and is a workhorse.

Buy this for dependability.

Works great, stands up to a beating. If you can't figure out how to use it or you feel its difficult to tell when the valve is on you shouldn't be out in the woods. MSR comes through again with a great idea!

MSR Reactor Stove

MSR Reactor Stove

Rating for this product: 5 August 5, 2011

Half a liter of water to a full boil in less than a minute. Maybe slightly more than a minute depending on your altitude. Your gas will last you forever. I pack an 8 ounce canister and typically can last roughly 3-4 weeks eating 2 mountain houses a day...sometimes more.

Solid, efficient, a lil heavy. Good stove.

DAKINE Builder's Pack - 1800cu in

DAKINE Builder's Pack - 1800cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 5, 2011

I'll prelude this by telling you I'm on a trail crew in the Gifford Pinchot Natl Forest (@ Mt. Saint Helens). I make sure trails are cut out, do tread work, brush, build bridges, etc... All of this is done in remote locations.

One day our crew was hiking a OHV trail and we met a group of dirt bikers, one who had this pack with a chainsaw bar popping out the pack. We immediately asked him about the bag and he told us it was one of the only ones of that model of bag in the world at the moment. Apparently his friend does R&D at DaKine and he was testing it for him. We requested his friends email and quickly procured our own test bags for our trail crew.

DaKine hit every nail on the head. This bag is a back-country tool belt. Its tough as nails, well built, well thought out, and a tremendously solid bag. The side pockets are well suited for Fuel bottles, saw wedges, water bottles, wrenches/screnches. The full zip on the back pad is perhaps the best feature, allowing you to access anything in your bag without having to unload your saw/helmet/whatever you have in the outer sleeve. There are plenty of interior pockets and zips, all of which are appropriately tough. The top zip is great for glasses, earplugs, full sized sunscreen, bug spray, ....ALL AT ONCE. Secondary front pouch is decent size and I use it all the time.

The features of this bag that set it apart from a normal bag are the two hand tool side holsters, and the chainsaw sleeve. The holsters are great for carrying polaskis, hazel hoes (bigtime), felling axes. Care should be used when carrying polaskis in these holster because they will tend to tear a hold in the back pocket of your jeans. These holsters have cinch-able straps to hold the head of the tool snug against the bottom of the pack.

The chainsaw sleeve is something I typically use to hold ANYTHING I WANT. Its huge. You can fit a decent sized power-head in it, up to a 46. You might be able to fit a 66 in there but I don't know why you would want to punish yourself like that. Typically, I would only recommend carrying a chainsaw in the sleeve if you are on a dirt bike or have a significant distance to travel with nothing to cut in between you and your goal. If you are not on a bike the deciding factor on whether you will be using this sleeve for your saw will be how full your pack is with other stuff. If it's not very full I would go for it. If you have enough stuff in your bag it will make the saw sit farther away from your body, increasing the discomfort to your shoulders and hips. Generally I am on foot and have a lot of stuff to buck so I just use a shoulder pad and huff it that way. But its the only truely practical way to port a saw around on a dirt bike. I have seen all the improvised saw holsters and this is way better...trust me. You can cinch it down hard and the bar will basically peek above your head vertically. Be forewarned: If you have a long bar, you will catch stuff hanging above your head.

The lopper slip is handy and well placed. Hip strap pockets will fit big batteries, small cameras. Came with a first aid baggy (empty), and a nail bag which is basically a roll up 4 or 5 pocket bag. I don't use either but you might.

I have used this pack for several years now and i have beat the ever loving hell out of it. It is still trucking just like the first day out of the bag. Its got bar oil all over it, dirt, nails, scuffs, anything you can throw at it. No rips, tears, frays, or decrease in comfort. The back pad is comfy but made for those of us with wide shoulders. If you are smaller than 5'5 or 5'6 this bag will be a little big on your back especially if you are really skinny. I wouldn't use this to carry a chainsaw on a mountain bike as I have tried once or twice. As soon as you start ascending your bike will want to wheely, sometimes to the point that you flip it. Just too much weight behind the seat.

If you need to do work somewhere, on dirt bike, on foot, far away...look no further, redemption is here. This pack will last you ten seasons. Buy this for trail crews, buy this for toughness, buy this for cutting out trails, buy this for a rock solid piece of trail gear.

Mountain Hardwear Fluid 26 Backpack - 1600cu in

August 2, 2011

I tend to do long hikes into the wilderness, setup camp and then scramble over the duration of the trip to sketchier areas. I need a daypack/technical bag that I can cram-fit into my Osprey Aether 60. Does this have some ridged component that would hinder cramming? Also considering the Arc'teryx Cierzo.

MSR Dromedary Bags

MSR Dromedary Bags

Rating for this product: 5 July 9, 2011

I work/have worked on a trail crew on Mount St. Helens/Gifford Pinchot for 4 years now. I bought this bag this year and have been using it every day relentlessly. I have the 6l bag and I gotta say it's tough as nails. It goes in my backpack (which doesn't have a reservoir slip) and gets tussled around with chainsaw files, dirt, pointy objects and various forms of trash/gear non stop for 10 hours a day. It has yet to show signs of use.

I'm die hard when it comes to brand loyalty with MSR, even sometimes when it means paying too much. They have NEVER let me down. This is the best MSR product that I own, right next to the miniworks microfilter. You will be happy with this bag if what you need is unbelievable versatility.

I use it with a mouthpiece for when I'm hiking/working. I use it as a camp res for when we are spiked out in the wilderness. It has the same size mouth as a large mouthed Nalgene so there's plenty of compatibility issues resolved. The miniworks filter screws right onto this bad boy, so no balancing acts. Shoot, you can even use it as a stand alone water backpack if you use the guide string over your shoulders (not as comfy but sometimes the situation arises). I will be buying the shower head attachment as well to make cleaning up dishes easier, I'm not much for bathing in the backcountry.
